Changing a tracheostomy tube is a simple procedure which can be done at home. To exchange a tracheostomy tube requires a few supplies such as a tracheostomy tube, lubricant jelly, tracheostomy tube holder and obturator; and it also requires a little bit of patience and skill. #lifewithavent #trach

Thank you for making this video, it is very informative. I am a new grad RT. It was helpful to see the importance of the obturator and the way you took out and inserted the trach tube. You are a very special person and an important voice to the many others with tracheostomy who may not be able to speak for themselves. Thank you for what you are doing.

Hello, thanks for sharing informative video! Stay blessed!! I hv question about drinking and swallowing first time with trach tube inserted. What steps required? I know we can use thickner in liquid to swallow through mouth (not PEG tube) Do u need to deflate cuff with the help of pilot ballon before swallow through mouth? Plz advise, thx
@LifewithaVent
@LifewithaVent Месяц назад
Hello. To swallow, it is best to deflate the tracheostomy tube. To test swallowing, ask the person to swallow his/her spit. If that is successful and the person does not start coughing or choking, you can proceed to test swallowing by drinking liquids. Different liquid consistencies can be tried such as plain water and thicker liquids such as apple sauce, yogurt, ice cream, etc. It is preferable that a speech therapist conduct the swallowing trials because the speech therapist will best be able to evaluate if the person is able to swallow or if the person is aspirating. If the person aspirates, suctioning will need to be done immediately.

I am also on a ventilator like you, I have been on a ventilator since 2015 with an endotracheal tube. Recently I had to have a tracheotomy because I could no longer place an endotracheal tube. How long does it take for the wound to heal? How do you talk? Do you take antibiotics? Thanks
@LifewithaVent
@LifewithaVent 2 месяца назад
Thank you for sharing. It took ten days for my tracheostomy site to heal. For details about how to talk, please see the following video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FSL57g7iIN8.html I take antibiotics if I am sick with an infection and my doctor thinks I should take antibiotics. Otherwise, I do not take antibiotics.

Hi , You sure do look good today. How was your day? I do hope it was a good one. I have question maybe you can help. I have blood around my g tube area. I have had it replaced 3 times it is painful. I have lost a lot of weight just finished radiation but my weight keeps going down. I cant eat by mouth. Cant speak total lary was done. . No one seems to know nothing about this surgery. I look like a monster . They took skin from my leg and replaced the skin around my wound. For making a stoma. i weighed when this all started 260 very stout not sagging fat blubber. 3 Mths later I weigh 113 nothing fits . I wish I could eat . I feel if I dont get to eat soon I will die. I have a hard time swallowingit goes down comes back up. Have you ever heard such crazyness. Got anything for me. TY love ya great video.

Hello. Thank you for sharing some of your story with me. I am sorry you are going through so much. You need to be evaluated by a medical provider. Either they have to increase the calories you are getting via the feeding tube, or you need IV nutrition called TPN. In short, you need to get more nutrition. It sounds as though you also need your swallowing evaluated and possibly an upper endoscopy. Radiation can damage adjacent tissues. Radiation can also cause swelling and inflammation. Your esophagus may be inflamed from the radiation. This may be causing you to not be able to swallow without it coming back up. Doing an upper endoscopy, they should be able to evaluate your G-tube. I do not know why it is bleeding. It could just be granulation tissue, or it could be something else. If you would like more information about granulation tissue, here is a link to a video about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YD6_SUTakOc.html Bottom line: You need to be evaluated by a medical provider. Your cancer team should be able to address these issues as they all sound as though they stem from radiation/cancer treatment.
