I once started snoring so loud I woke myself up. And it'd be pretty cool if I could absolutely not hear anything while sleeping, or at least before I fall asleep, because even the tiniest sounds make it hard for me to fall asleep and that's annoying. Of course, I'm not trying to romanticize being deaf either! Being able to hear is a bliss and i don't know what I'd do if I couldn't listen to music or hear my mom's voice anymore or ever again!! So yeah, being deaf is definitely not something to dream of, but there's still good sides to anything, and I wanted to point them out in an attempt to make deaf people feel better.

I'm sure You've thought of this already and I'm obviously late to the show here, but my Military husband is up at unholy hours AND I HATE LIGHT TOO, and so the way we have worked around that is a RED LIGHTBULB! Red light does not travel through your eyelids unless you're right up in there because it has the longest wavelength and, therefore, the least amount of energy in the visible spectrum. SO, we have a light he can turn on that is red and it won't wake me up and if I open my eyes there is no glare or squint-inducing light, but he can move around to get ready for work! Hope that was helpful! :)

2 questions for Ellen: 1) Is it strange to have arguments in silence? I guess you’re probably used to it by now but I think that must be so strange as a hearing person 2) Does your house feel very silent because Ryan prefers not to us his voice? If so, do you like to have music or some background noise just to make it less silent for you? Really love your videos by the way I really like how you both answer questions so open and honestly thank you both !
@Yes-zp5wi
@Yes-zp5wi 3 года назад
Ryan is a very calm person as per the other videos. So imo their arguments would be a lot less aggressive so even though silent arguments may seem alien to us it wouldn't be all that different to them cause as you said one would become accustomed to it.

My elementary school taught us how to sign the alphabet in ASL. It's never been in much use, but I've never forgotten how to sign them because I learned it at a young age! Whenever I need to communicate with Deaf people or signers, the alphabet takes a while, but it works :) I think ASL should be taught through elementary or middle school at least as an elective course. I would have loved to learn more about it when I was a child.

@@Someone-tk7zh I actually had that anxiety growing up because I'm hard of hearing, meaning I'm slightly deaf in my hearing. I'm around half deaf in both ears since I was born and I slept with night lights all the time, even today in my 20's I still sleep with light on sometimes. I didn't understand why I hated the dark, but I do know I feared losing both my hearing and my eye sight as I grow older. I'm Asian and have glasses, so me worried about my eye sight, and hearing and my health, you can imagine the fear and worries I have. just imagine losing one sense you rely on so much, mine is sight and I'd be devastated to lose that too.

@averynerdybookworm972 4 года назад
OmniscientWarrior well facial expressions play a huge part in signing. Think about verbal communication. Facial expressions are sometimes more meaningful than the words they speak. In ASL it’s the same. The expression helps convey the tone. Also you don’t usually stare at people’s lips when they talk unless you can’t hear them. Same with asl.

@OmniscientWarrior 4 года назад
@@kyle3045 Because reading lips can sometimes be off also helps to reinforce what she knows by practice. For example, you most likely have learned the word "reificate" in English or a preforming arts class, and though the concept you understand, do you even know what the word means? How about the base form of the word, "reify?" Most commonly used in action form, "reification." An example of such being done, "what has science done!" Science, in this case, has been reificated.

"hands-on" love the double meaning. Also, I have something similar to you, except I don't choose not to listen. Sometimes the brain just doesn't comprehend speech as words, just any other sound. I know that someone is saying something, I just don't know what lol. Or I hear bits of what they are saying and try to fill in the gaps; sometimes what I think I hear is actually ridiculous which is how I know that's probably not what they actually said.

When I did a little bit of research a while back, I discovered there's a phobia of the dark. I cannot remember the name, but I remember reading how most people who have the phobia are deaf. This was actually reassuring for me, because I am deaf and all of my life, I have had this intense fear of the dark. I grew up being taught that only little children are scared of the dark and everyone grows out of it. I felt like something was wrong with me, as here I am an adult, and I still sleep with a light on. But after learning this and growing into my deaf identity, it does not bother me anymore, and I have learned why I am scared of the dark. Like Ryan explained, deaf people rely on their eyes and not their ears. We already don't have one sense. Taking away another is terrifying. I never go anywhere after dark, and always try to get home before the sun goes down. I am the world's heaviest sleeper, as having slept through tornados and a drunk person going through the yard and taking out a tree and fence, yet if the light gets turned off, I wake up immediately and go into a panic when I cannot see anything. I use the salt lamps with the adjustable light setting, so I have a nice low red glow in my room when I sleep. Funny thing is, my dog is scared of the dark too, so we both sleep with a light on.

I am just in awe of you two! My son was born 40% deaf so I learned basics when I was teaching him language, but Unfortunately I lost him at the age of 5, So I stopped learning. But I always felt the need to learn more… several years later.. while I was in prison.. I had my dad send me an asl book and I learned what I could from that book while I was there. Now that I am in the free world again, and changed my life back to the way it was before I lost my son, I have a great job now, and I just got promoted as a trainer. The 19yr old I am training right now is hard of hearing. And the skills I learned from that book have came in good use for us. I seem to be the only one in the warehouse that knows any asl however I am still a serious beginner but he commended me for my signing and it filled me with so much joy. I just found you two while I was searching to expand my knowledge of asl and watching these vids has helped me so much already I have even signed up with skill share to improve my signing ability. Thank you so so much for existing!

@@Nicolas.Fernandes Imagine you're listening to a German speaker. Based off your English, there may be a few words that sound familiar (ex. house and haus) but you certainly wouldn't be able to "get along". Unless you had studied a bit of German, you'd probably have absolutely no idea what was going on. Same thing happens with sign languages. Even American Sign Language and British Sign Language aren't considered mutually intelligible and they're "based" off the same spoken language. The alphabets are completely different too so it's not like you can finger spell words either. There's a few videos out there showing the differences between Sign Languages used in different countries and how different they can be, even with numbers. Although, I imagine the one advantage deaf signers would have is that they're probably used to gesturing. In the same way that two people that speak different languages can gesture to each other to try and get their point across, signers can do the same and might be better at it since they might be used to doing it with hearing people.

I love these videos so much and I'm SO glad you guys do these videos! I know it says to turn on closed captioning, but I don't... And I don't understand everything he is saying, but it forces me to practice. I am committed to learning sign language because I have a deaf cousin that I see at every family reunion, and she seems like a fun person, but I have never been able to talk to her! Now, she is married to someone who is also deaf... I failed Spanish in high school because I never had anyone to practice with and I thought I was just awful with languages! Fast forward 11yrs; not only do I have 2 deaf cousins, but I communicate with 2 other cousins (hearing) that are fluent, my sister (hearing) learned, and I met my best friend (hearing) who has been fluent in sign language since high school. Turns out I just needed practice buddies.... I am definitely behind cause I'm now in my mid 20's... BUT, my thought process is that if I watch these videos enough without closed captioning, I'll be able to pick up and understand what is being said, even if I haven't learned enough sign language yet to sign a response. :)

For ASL most of the context and expression in the sentence is in the facial expressions. When you’re fluent you can watch the signs with your peripheral vision and watch the expressions so you get the full meaning and context.

My deaf ASL teacher told us we have to learn to understand signs without staring at the signer's hands. Apparently it can be considered rude if you just watch their hands. Also, facial expressions are SUPER important to understanding what's being said

when you look at his lips and hear the small sounds you can tell what he's saying very often

I can’t stop watching your videos. I find myself using my hands a lot more when I talk. And I’m actually using sign language. It’s crazy. I love it. You are a wonderful couple. Thank you for the great videos. Stay safe.

In the dark with my boyfriend, for *I love you* we grab each other’s hands and squeeze three times. Or throughout the day, if I’m busy and can’t sign, he’ll squeeze my hip or tap my shoulder three times as an I love you.

My bf and I are also doing the 3x squeezing hand, but we're not deaf - almost universal, it's cute :)

I just found this channel today and you guys are so wholesome.. I know some basic ASL but I'm a bit rusty as I haven't used sign in years. This makes me want to brush back up on sign so I am better prepared. Thank you both for this wholesome educational fun
