Decluttering one drawer, one cabinet, or one space at a time makes it easier to manage stuff on daily basis. To start decluttering, I empty out the space, decide what I want to keep, then evaluate the unchosen items for decluttering, donation, keep, or trash. Join me as I declutter, organize, and our home in this video today!

When we retired to a smaller house I added containers to my closets and started adding my favorite things and quit when things were looking full, it made it easy to decide what to purge. I keep my book collection to my large bookcase, not all over the house. All paper items are in one desk, no papers in any other room. All of my holiday decor fits in the guest room closet shelf. I had a goal when I moved here to not store things and it has worked for seven years, my husband enjoys our system too. We have no basement and I keep none of my stuff in our garage or shed. It has been very freeing and selling all my plastic totes gave me joy. I have more time for fun things and no longer spend all my time managing stuff.

Poodlegirl55: AMEN,AMEN to EVERYTHING that you said!🙌🏻 My husband and I also downsized to a smaller house seven years ago and I had the SAME intentions! What is the point of storing stuff and having things all over the house? We have all of our papers in one file drawer in my husband’s desk and one small banker’s box of our last seven years of taxes in the basement and ALL of our books are on three bookcases in the living room. However…….I’m still going through two LARGE boxes of my parent’s memories and photos, ugh, and photos, etc, etc, etc,of ours from when we moved in. I feel like I’m losing hours of my precious life just trying to manage my stuff! (Our slightly under 1000 square feet of main floor living space is always neat, clean and organized but when I go down to the basement once a week to do laundry, the neatly piled totes nag at me)😖😵‍💫😳😬😫😵🫤🫢😢

Dana K. White has the same thing and calls it the container concept. It's so much easier when you see everything as a container.

Sue Wolfe- This is very much like The Container Method that Dana K White's speaks about on her channel and in her books. She's been using this for many years; since her college age children were very young. I think it's a great way to think of your spaces!

Erica - I have watched you for years, and I was listening as you talked about paper, and I think the boundary method does work for paper, but maybe not if you have had a significant influx from an outside source that is overwhelming. I don’t see you as minimalist. I see you as an engaged mother, and I suspect an excellent teacher to your children. Surely being a minimalist should take stress off, not add stress. You seem to be sharing your home with people who are not minimalist, so that might also be overwhelming if someone’s goal is minimalism.

I really like this method, I've been using it for quite a while now. I saw a good tip for those fabric cubes. The Dollar Tree cubes, use the insert they have for the bottom, instead of using it there, keep it folded in half and place it inside upright. Then it gives you 2 compartments for smaller items, unders and socks and such.

👋 Erica. The boundary method sounds like an ideal way for me to focus my purging/organizing. I've been overwhelmed (not only by clutter but life in general) and realized the overwhelm has taken a toll on my general happiness. One step at a time, I will be grasping the reigns and instilling calm and happiness back into my home and daily life. Thanks for this inspiring upload❤

Great video! I didn’t use the boundary method (maybe I did sub consciously!) to declutter my young adult daughters clothes. She is neuro divergent and I just assumed a vast array of choice of clothes for a teenage daughter was best! How wrong I was! Minimalising available choices is so much easier for her it turns out and she is very happy with a much paired down wardrobe! Journey to minimalism really is a learning curve! Boundary method sounds great! X

Paper is tricky although I give myself max 10 years in income taxes. So when I start a new filling I shred the equivalent of 10 years before. I also have a pretty catch all box …place receipts when I return something or whatever I know it is temporary hold . When it starts getting too full I damp the stuff on my desk and get rid of no longer is required. I have done that so years even before the decluttering journey and works like a charm. Now important papers or documents like passports etc I have a zipped binder for myself and one for each member of the family and im there it goes. Don’t even care if is tightly as long as it is all in that zipped binder. Thank you for your videos. I just found you and you are so real and down to earth

Minimalism is a journey for sure. I've got boundaries for categories, but if you're not happy with what you have you'll end up purchasing things. That's where I've been. Over the past month or two I've been filling up six bags of decluttered items, mostly clothes. I'd rather upgrade or change my style to what feels the most authentic, and that means not buying what's trending.

Erica, thank you for sharing your day with us. The boundary method works really well for me, as I use it everywhere. It is especially great for clothing and in the kitchen. I agree with you about only keeping certain number of hangers in the wardrobe or closet. I see so many people who buy more and more hangers, then buy more and more clothes just because they have excessive hangers to hand that they feel they need to fill; and they wonder why they run out of space! Personally, I think no more than twenty everyday-wear hangers is a sufficient number for me. I use ten for tops and shirts and ten for trousers. I have six extra nicer hangers for the special outfits and dresses which I only wear on special occasions and for family events. Plus, five for business suits.

Thank you for doing this. This is my main method and works wonderfully. I have to get the courage to do limit number of hangers…lol…but one of these days I will get the courage. But I do it with socks, underwear, purses…yes I just had to declutter my bags because shelf was bulging and bags were sneaking into another shelf.

Did it bug anyone else to see her roll up shirts that appeared to be inside out and place them in the drawer? Oy! I do get the boundary method she opened with in her closet. I live in a van, and use the same process with my clothes. I also use Konmari when I shop, to limit the number of new items I bring in. If it doesn't spark joy in the store, it doesn't come home with me. If new things do come in, old items have to go out. It's actually quite liberating.

😂 My version is statistics: We should fill the space tp 90%, but we tend to fill it to 110%, so I remove 20%, which is a good enough estimate. 😂 Iow, 60 pieces of clothing on hangers in my closet, pick the 12 I do not need/use and get rid of them. 10 pairs of pajama pants? throw out the 2 that are worn out or uncomfortable.
