I dehydrate bone broth all the time and one tsp of powder equals an entire CUP of bone broth.

As liquid as the broth is, it will become powder with no issues? I degrease my broth with a oil/grease separator pitcher.

@@loli_d I cook it into a concentrate but yes it will dehydrate. I either use my oven at 170 or my freeze dryer. Oven takes a couple of days. Freeze drying about 24 hours.

Cool idea! I do not have a dehydrator, but I have the same issue with space to store homemade broth. I figured out I could simmer the broth down until it’s denser and less in volume, then freeze in silicone ice cube trays for making large ice cubes. When the cubes are frozen, I take them out and store together in a gallon freezer bag. I reduce my broth such that a pint of broth becomes about 1/2 cup, which fits in one 2” ice cube slot. Then I just add more water as needed when thawing/using the broth later. I’d like to get a dehydrator someday though, seems like a versatile tool. Love your creative and adventurous spirit in innovating solutions and better methods for your projects!

Mary’s Nest has amazing bone broth videos. I personally remove the fat which I save and render for use in cooking. I feel like that makes the powder last longer, and I love having that wonderful fat for gravies, etc. I’m becoming addicted to saving bones and fats! I can’t believe how much nutrition I used to throw away!

Hi Heidi, I save all chicken bones and unused veggies in a bag in the freezer. When it’s full, I simmer all ingredients with Bay Leaves and some homemade Apple Vinegar for about 6 hours. Then, strain into a large pitcher, place in fridge. Next day, scrape off fat and dehydrate. When cooled, I powder it up and store. I use it in gravies, rice, other meat dishes, mashed potatoes, etc. Thanks for this video, as I just go on my own way too.

When I dehydrated my frozen them thawed bone broth I noticed it was very oily. I was concerned about powdering it because I thought it would just become one big clump so I just flaked it like you do for your tomato powder. That also turned out great. I'm so thankful for this video though because now I know to get those silicone trays! Thanks so much.

Ok you’ve convinced me. I’m going to just have to get a round dehydrator. I have a rectangle dehydrator and silicone trays simply do not exist that fit it. I’ll find one at a sale and snatch it. My new oven has a dehydrator setting which is pretty cool and works great for fruit & veg, but I’m not sure it would work well for liquids nor have I found silicone trays that ……hold that thought….. Omg 🤦🏼‍♀️ Well I need to thank you. Thank you, Heidi. You made me talk myself in a circle which led to…. I can use those silicone trays that don’t fit my dehydrator in my oven. And my oven is gas, which I prefer at this point over electric. I should delete this entire thing but I’m going to leave it so I can show you in real time how helpful you are. Even if it’s a stupid obvious thing I should have figured out long ago. Oh well, at least my freezers will have a lot more space once I get all this stock outta them and into the storeroom.

This is an excellent idea. I have 4 bags of broth that I froze in ice cube trays. Needless to say they take up a lot of freezer space. Thank you for talking about keeping the fat in. That is a relief. I've seen others say that is definitely a no no. I also like the fat in it. I have only dehydrated broth by removing the fat. I am going to try leaving it in. I also need to make room in my freezer, but have been putting off dehydrating the broth due to fat content and it just a pain to worry about that as well as extra time. Great content as usual!

Wonderful post, Heidi, thank you. I have found that, if I have a nice big layer of fat on top of my liquid bone broth, it will keep in the fridge for months. It is effectively "vacuum sealed," since no air can get through the fat. I do use canning jars and lids to store this way. This spring I want to begin dehydrating our eggs, when The Girls flood us with their luscious eggs. and since I like to have BB on hand, I have been canning it. But oh, the work! Dehydrating is the way to go, I think. Yes, I will leave the fat in it, too. This will be a wonderful food to have on hand, to have a cup of BB: just boil some water. Thanks again.

I have only been dehydrating bone broth for a little over a year...I skim most but not all the fat. I use it in soups and cooking rice mostly. It devolves almost instantly...with the lid and jar shortages in the recent past it will save me on both jars and lids...so this is going to be the new norm.

I cook my broth down as far as I can before dehydrating. When my freeze dryer was working, did not worry so much about it -- but with dehydrating, I wonder if it is good - so I keep the jars in the refrigerator. So for, no growth or anything on them. I also vacuum seal them. The issue I have to remember is how little I need because of cooking it down.

Yeah, I have seen a lot of people going with those expensive set ups and first started to feel a little pressured but then realized I really did not want one, especially considering the cost of it as is, plus the time and cost of maintenance. Plus, dehydrated food takes up less space than freeze dried and I have been hearing more and more stories about people's freezer dryers breaking down on them. Nope. I lost all interest. So I went on a mission to see if one could simply dehydrate all these things at much less the cost. :)

I cool them just long enough so that they are totally cool then fold/roll the silicone trays up and use this to loosen the broth from the trays and then dump into the jars. Depending on the shape and size of your trays, I would think you may be able to use ones for another brand. For example, if you have a cabinet style with square trays, the Excalibur ones may work if it is bigger in size and if your trays are smaller, the Cosori ones may work even if they do not fit perfectly. Just take measurements and compare

This one was not about the eggs, so I was not going into detail on that since I already have a video just on dehydrating eggs and how I store them that is linked in the description box but no, I do not store them in the freezer, I store them on a shelf. You may need to store them in the freezer if it gets very hot where they are at but that would go with any fats. If you store oils and other fats that go rancid on the shelf, then these are all things that should be kept in the freezer if you do not have a cooler place to store them

The same I do about the vinegar and really, you do not need any of them to pull the nutrients out, just cooking them down for a couple of days will do that

@@RainCountryHomestead thanks that’s what I was thinking. I have a bag of the smaller ones so would probably put in at least 2 for a pint. Because I have done it before and did not like how it turned out. Wine adds a nice flavor and works just as well to help pull out nutrients but really, neither are necessary for that as cooking for at least two days will do just fine

I personally have little use for veggie broths but really all you have to do is toss a bunch of vegetables (scraps even like carrot tops, celery leaves, onion skins and so on) into a pot and cook it down for a couple of days. Little different than making a bone broth but you will not get the same gelatinous quality without adding something like chia or flax seed to it

My Gram did not refrigerate eggs and kept them on the counter... but never long enough for them to dry out. That was 50 years ago. I've had raw Easter Eggs explode after a while. It makes me concerned about spoilage and contamination. I'm concerned about poisoning myself to slow-dry broth or eggs. It takes only once. How do you stay safe?
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 2 года назад
12 hours dehydration time will not spoil it. Remember, it is drying the whole time so that will just not happen, I have dried cheese, eggs, meat, and milk without issue and you would know if any of these actually spoiled
@nellcovington4001
@nellcovington4001 2 года назад
I just read recently that, if your eggs were refrigerated when you bought them, then you should keep them in the fridge. If the eggs were not refrigerated, then it is ok to store them unrefrigerated. While dehydrating the eggs, heat is cooking them which keeps them safe.

Does the fat effect the storage length?
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead Год назад
No. If you vacuum seal and store in a cool pantry (as all shelf stable food should be stored) it will be fine. Most people store buckets of lard, olive oil, and other fats stored the same way without issue.
@dsawake58
@dsawake58 Год назад
I like the idea very much but does this not use a ton of power to have dehydrator running long enough? It takes an age to dry fruit leathers and in NZ, that's a lot of power consumption. Maybe you people have cheaper power?
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead Год назад
Takes power to can it or to freeze it as well so one can take their pick. A dehydrator does not pull as much power per minute as the heat needed to can when you have it on a lower setting and on a higher setting, it will shorten the time. Dehydrating takes up about 1/4 to 1/8 of the space so even if you pay more in electricity to dehydrate, you save in space in the freezer or pantry
