It took me my whole childhood to get where I am, but I made many mistakes. I didn't use references and didn't bother to learn anatomy. But to be fair, I was a little girl and didn't really care at the time. Now as I'm older, I am taking it more seriously than I used to. Or I'm trying. Each time I make a drawing, I know I'm going to improve and do better at my weaknesses if I practice my weak spots.

Oh that's so kind! I'm happy to share! I can list a few if you don't mind the ramble: 1) As stated in your video, I definitely wish I learned not to try and draw things 100% perfect to the reference, as that lead to a lot of stiff and confusing studies. Breaking things down into simple shapes definitely helps a lot more 2) I wish I realized that I could keep studies/foundational work interesting by tailoring it to what I enjoy (Example: Doing BG studies of places I personally like, that way my brain stays engaged even through the 'boring' stuff) 3) I wish there was more emphasis that doing 'bad' drawings is okay, and that doing 100 bad drawings is better than waiting to get 1 drawing perfect. My growth kickstarted when I allowed myself to "fail" more often. Hopefully that helps! Feel free to use any part of it! :)

I've watched a number of your videos at this point, and the way you explain all of your own journey lands so much with me. Thank you for sharing and helping me to elevate myself. Now I have the hardest task.. "doing it" 😂 Just wanted to add to this, while I also learn from artists like Proko and Marc Brunett, the main thing I feel your videos help me with is my own self doubt in the process and direction. Marc is a fantastic teacher, but the disconnect I've thought about, is the lack of showing those early stages. I think this is the gap you're able to fill for me, you have your work from these earlier stages and share them openly as you speak about it, just further reinforcing the intent behind these studies and thus giving me confidence in what I'm doing.

Thanks for helping break down the art of drawing poses. One thing I'm curious about, before I check your previous videos. Do you have any tips or advice for giving/turning your sketched shapes into drawings? I've been able to make progress drawing simple poses and transforming them into simple shapes, but it's been hard adding detail over it. For example, drawing a torso as a large rectangle, then adding pecs or a shirt to it. Right now, when I see my assortment of shapes I get overwhelmed visually and have a hard time adding that detail.
@edward222100
@edward222100 7 месяцев назад
A couple of things i do/did as a beginner when i wanted to use a sketch i made. firstly check it with the reference, this means copy pasting, sizing up the image. how accurate was the drawing? what needs to change? next is now going from shape, to bone, to muscle and finally shading. now if you're doing cartoon or a simple style you don't need to do all these. perhaps just look at your favourite artist that does the style you like and see what they use. I Hope this helps
@cyan2964
@cyan2964 7 месяцев назад
@@edward222100 yeah it does help a lot and thanks. It'll still be hard, since its easier to theorize than do. But thanks for the advice! Right now I'm taking steps back to focus on anatomy. Because I just can't get the anatomy of torsos, necks, waists or muscles right.

If I have learned nothing else in the year of 2023, I have learned that the answer to just about every question I've ever had sums up to "Well, that depends on what you're trying to do exactly." That "4" explanation just unlocked a whole other way of thinking for me. I would try so many different ways to draw anatomy and try to make it my main for every drawing but that method would only work SOME of the time. It never occurred to me to mix and match them to fit each situation!!! AGH!

I’m 55 years old and I’ve been doing that exact thing, drawing line by line, every single detail, to replicate others’ art. I can’t draw my own OC’s at all without a reference, and then it looks like their art. Where should I start to learn how to make my characters look good and realistic?
@AnimeCharlie
@AnimeCharlie 7 месяцев назад
Ok for me... and this is my approach. What I've learned to do is combine multiple references. So for instance let's say I like the clothing of one reference, but I like the body composition of an entirely different reference . And let's say I prefer the facial structure of a third reference. I'll put them in a board and what I'll do is I will "play around".... I'll work thru the concepts of each reference. I'll make a lot of fast drawings just to get to a final state that i will then refine. My goal is to try to move away from drawing exactly what the references looks like and move towards using the references as inspiration. This definitely a skill i am still developing. But I hope that helps.

Just a quick question. Why do all of my sketches look normal but terrible when flipped with a mirror? Am I making some kind of mistake?
@AnimeCharlie
@AnimeCharlie 4 месяца назад
This is something I struggled with a lot, and at times, I still do. To explain what's happening, imagine I give you directions: Take *TWO* lefts, one right, and then keep straight at the stop sign, you'll arrive. And you hear: Take *ONE* left, one right, keep straight, and at the stop sign, you'll arrive. The problem is the slight change in the front of your directions lands you in a completely different area. So when I would draw, I would make a micro mistake. Maybe I'd draw one line a little more crooked than I meant to. Unfortunately, because I was in the early stages of a drawing, I would build up all the lines off of that one early mistake. And so once I was done, everything would look wonky. So what I was taught was to flip the drawing early on. Before adding the lumps, bumps, clothing, and color, so that if your lines are crooked, you can fix them so that even if the mistake happens on the backend, your foundation is at least correct. Hope that helps!!

Absolutely not. One thing I have a theory on is we all have preferences. Like for me, my preference is to add more cubes and boxes for heads. And due to our preferences it creates a "style". So if rectangles work best for you ,my friend, it may be that is your preferred way. And that preferred way may become "your style". So keep on! 😬
