This is absolutely great advice. The reason why it's overlooked is because honing fundamentals takes TIME and EFFORT (months to years). People getting into art might find it boring to learn basic shapes and forms but it's one of the prerequisites to drawing anything you want. Master the fundamentals and the rest will be easier.
@jaybeebartolome8386

To be honest, this actually simplifies drawing. Its easy to check for errors this way.

@@RSATT01 Robert Laszlo Kiss Industrial sketching fundamentals / Drawabox course / 6 principles of structures and intro to drawing by proko / or look up shapes and form exercises here on youtube. Keep in mind drawing shapes and forms require repetition and a base understanding of perspective so don't get discouraged if you don't get it at first! Much of my life hasn't changed yet at the same time everything has! For instance I'm talking to you about drawing! Had I never made the leap we would never have found each other in the vast ocean of the internet lol. I say all that to say you never know how one decision may affect the rest of your life! Hey dude, I just wanted to reach out and say thank you because the complexity of the human body is insane. But your way of showcasing the alphabet and how easy and simple it is to read words 01:17 . Your voice is so buttery smooth; thank you for the advice. I highly recommend Andrew Loomis' books; most of them are available for free on Internet Archive. "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards taught me not to label things, and I often found that my best drawings started with a silhouette instead of trying to define parts of the figure. So, I believe I have a good understanding of what you're saying. While reading RSB I gained a solid grasp of portraying what I'm drawing, but I still struggle to bring my own imagination into things. Currently, I'm going through "Fun with a Pencil" primarily and "Figure Drawing for All It's Worth" secondarily with a steady feeling of progression.

Yo this is exactly what i needed to get an idea of how to improve! I've been frustrated with my art lately, since i can draw certain things incredibly well but I struggle with humans. I was about to start the rigorous journey of studying anatomy because I figured that was what I needed for humans, even though i draw non mammalian animals quite well. This is something I've already been doing with other animals and just didn't realize it. This gives me a good idea of what to dig into! Thanks!

Because I consider myself intermediate, with a bachelors in art and allat, i still find it very hard to pick up a Morpho anatomy book and just study these very medical anatomical drawings. Yes, it's good to know fundamentals, but I like humand for how they change shape, it's fascinating how with every breath and every move those shapes change. i'm glad to finally find someone with the same opinion on this as me! well.... animators all do tend to agree also but it's never quite fully put into words.

Really insightful video! Definitely a mistake that I also made, starting by studying anatomy by trying to memorize all the bones and muscles but not really studying gesture as a whole... I'm practicing that a lot more now. One thing I noticed from your video and wanted to ask about is: Where do you get those heavier bodies reference pictures from? I've noticed with many reference packs that the models tend to be on the slim/athletic body type, and I would like to introduce more diversity in the bodies I draw. I would appreciate some advice with that 😊
