There are tons of questions and a lot of confusion about how to feed ball pythons. This video covers how I do it. We're going to demystify the when where how and most importantly, what to feed your ball python. We're going to show examples of snakes and prey items side by side. We'll talk about how I thaw out frozen prey items and go over what we have some of the feeding rules we have with snakes. That's right, snake digestion! Also, Kent has a new segment, so those of you who watch just for Kent, you're in for a treat... sort of.

My 8 year old daughter is autistic and snakes are her special interest. This child has consumed every informative piece of snake content that the internet has to offer. She can identify almost any morph and the genes you need to make it at this point. Snake egg cutting vids all day every day, she uses a lot of big words that I don't understand. Well for her birthday the last few years, all she's wanted was a snake. This year, I decided to get her one as she knows everything there is to know to take care of one. We came home with a male albino pinstripe half grown already. She would not hear anything, she wanted that snake, so she got it. He was on sale too, so I didn't need much convincing. We went snake shopping on the right day. They said the snake had only every had live rodents. My daughter, being who she is, said that her snake would be eating frozen cause it was safer and went on to ask me to buy a frozen rat for a few days later when he needed to eat. Completely disregarded the sales lady, who was very sweet by the way. The confidence on this kid's face made me chose not to question her, I bought the frozen rat and we went home. A few days later, it was time to feed him. It took about 20 minutes of encouragement and a few breaks, but my 8 year old got that snake to eat a frozen mouse for the first time, first try. The kid is good. Give her another decade or so, she's coming for your gig. 😅

This video is gold! My new baby BP had only been fed live, and I’m allergic to rodents so I can only do F/T, so I was worried. But I followed your technique (fed late at night, used a hair dryer to scent the enclosure, made the rat fuzzy nice and warm), and on day 8 of being here he ate like a champ! There were some beginners in a FB group asking questions about feeding so I linked this video and plugged your channel. Thanks for all the great content!

@@GreenRoomPythons Thanks! He seems to be doing great. I have a tub with aspen as the substrate, three hides, one being the warm side, another being the cold side, and another on the warm side with moist sphagnum in case he wants a more humid place, which I had seen on a different channel. I have a couple branches for clutter, and a water bowl as well. I have a heating pad that's currently 98 (I'm bringing it down a little because at first I was just getting it to actually heat the aspen), and the humidity in my house is always around the right range (I live in Central Florida so it's always very humid😂). He's hiding a lot which I've heard is good, and when I picked him up to put him in the tub he cooperated very well so I'm happy about that. All his body language seems to say he's doing just fine. He may have a stick eye cap on his left eye, I can't tell for sure, but I figure I'll wait until his next shed and see what happens then. No mites or anything like that so that's good. I'm gonna feed him on Wednesday, which is a week from his last feeding, and I'm gonna feed him the same thing he was getting before, a small mouse. I also blacked out three sides of the tub and have a towel over top as well and that seemed to help calm him down some also. Sorry this is so long😅. If you have any suggestions I'd be very glad to hear them. Once again thanks so much for the videos😁 (I've probably watched close to 10 hours of your videos in the past two days and it's really helped me get ready).

Hey bob saw this interesting thing on the snake discovery channel from a company called Reptilinks (possible misspell) they carry animal "juices" where they essentially gather the scent of different prey items like ASF, mice, geckos, anoles, etc. basically add a drop or 2 of the desired scent on the prey item of your choice to get them to take it. So mice scent on a rat for the beautiful Lucille lady! very possible I'm late to the party but I found it really cool and possibly helpful for kick starting the switch!

My daughter and I are in research mode, getting excited about becoming new BP owners! We LOVE Freya's colouring. What morph is she?? Also we were at the pet store today just to look at supplies, and there was like a plant/running water feature, that had a filter in it etc. Is that okay for a ball python/can they drink from something like that? THANK YOU
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons Год назад
Freya is a few different morphs but what you're seeing mostly in her is calico. Those water features aren't recommended for a snake just because they tend to breed bacteria in the pump and could make the snake sick. It's better to just have a water bowl for them.

This video was very informative! Thank you for sharing it. I do have a question about this topic that I haven’t been able to answer with my own research. Let’s say that your ball python is supposed to be fed something that’s 10-15% of its weight, but you gave it something that’s 6-8% of its weight instead. In this case, would the digestion process still take around 5 days to complete, or would it take less time? I’m assuming it would take the same amount of time, since the ball python is still digesting an entire prey item (with fur, bones, etc.), but I’m curious about whether this is true or not.

I have owned a corn snake for many years and am wanting a BP. Love your videos. You mentioned how you treat your females differently during breeding time. If I get a female as a pet, is there anything I need to do differently with her during breeding time or keep the same feeding schedule as normal? Thanks for your channel!
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 3 года назад
If she's just a pet, you don't need to do anything different. If you are actively breeding her with a male, there are some things to be aware of. But if not, it's normal feeding all year round

You are an angel 👼🏽! I happened to come across your channel and it has been a TREMENDOUS help. My abusive boyfriend left me with his 5-6ft ball python 🐍 and took ALL of her stuff to be spiteful. So for now I have her in a huge tub I will finally be getting all that she needs on the 3rd of November when I get paid (I’m disabled and live off of 1 paycheck a month) I struggle financially. I just had an emergency tracheotomy surgery as well that has been a bit challenging 😥 ( I’m only 43) Anyway he wasn’t feeding her properly, he kind of neglected her , only interacting with her when he would carry her around on his neck showing off like a true ignorant person 🙄 so I’m trying my best. She was eating 4-5 small live mice 🐁 but I had 2 issues- she stopped eating so the mice were trying to naw her and that’s NOT going to work for me. I want the best for her. So this video was full of all the information I needed. And to just think how I was deathly afraid of her when I first met her a couple of years ago. But I’ve been the one who takes care of her for that long so I lost all fear that I had and gained RESPECT so I’m careful. Your channel is my go to when I have ANY questions. You do an amazing job covering every aspect in depth while putting it in lament terms for someone like me who is not a breeder but have a beautiful ball python 🐍 as a pet. Thank you for all that you do on this channel. I’m forever grateful for somehow coming across your channel 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 so sorry for the long message 🙈

I appreciate you mentioning how the shape and size of the rat changes after it is thawed. I remember when I started I panicked after buying the rats because they looked twice the width of my snake. I bought more prey because I thought the first surely would never go down. When I thawed them, they were tiny! Couldn’t tell my snake had eaten and she seemed hungry only days later. I decided to just thaw the big ones and see, and they were the perfect size. With experience I’ve learned to eyeball every bit of this, but someone explaining it would’ve helped lol

I appreciate that this video is not trying to claim that there is ONLY one way to feed snakes.both live feeding and frozen thaw have pros and cons. And as much as I would not recommend live feeding to someone not prepared to put in the work required to do it safely or someone who enjoys the killing just a little bit too much. For me though I know that I definitely wanna offer live prey for the snakes that I hope to have one day. The plan so far is to breed feeder rodents and quails and offer them in supervised feeding sessions. I’ve watched a lot of videos on the topic and I’m convinced that snakes thrive from the stimulation that comes from hunting. And it has the benefit of any uneaten offerings can be returned to their home to add to the breeding efforts. I wouldn’t enjoy refreshing thawed uneaten offerings. I know a lot of people have other pets that will eat just about anything that’s offered I greatly appreciate the info about snake digestion and how to space out feedings to avoid over feeding their snake

Overtime I've found that my ball python likes to be completely secluded for about 24 hrs before I feed him. I just throw a towel over his tank to let him chill out. Do you have to do this for any of your snakes? (The back 3 sides are already covered, I just cover up the top and front.) I feel like they all have their own little quirks.
@GreenRoomPythons

Thats something that many ball pythons need. I dont have any at this point that need special treatment before feeding but its pretty common. They just need to feel safe and secure, so full tank coverage is a good idea!

Great video, thanks!!!! Here's a weird one, my boy Odin, whom is about 3 (ish) has NEVER refused a meal. He always took forever with tongs. He mis struck one time too many during a feed and so I dropped it and left him for the first time. Since then I have drop fed him every time. Every time he eats, and I switched to rat from mouse in one feed and since on rat he eats immediately after I put his tray down. He strikes (on point mostly), coils and eats and relax. Is my snake not a ball python?!?!?!

Hey bob, i have an adult male, smaller than freya, that ive been feeding a large rat to every other week. lately hes been skipping one meal and only eating monthly but i still offer every feeding day. for his size and age, should i consider a biweekly medium or maybe a weekly medium?
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons Год назад
A large rat would be too big for Freya even. Generally large breeding female ball pythons don't even get large rats, so he's just getting too much food each feeding. I don't even feed medium rats to my males. My adult males get a small rat every 2 weeks. I think if you drop the prey size down a couple sizes you'll find that he'll be eager to eat every 10 to 14 days.

Use a hairdryer to blow the scent into the enclosure. Wait until your snake is hunting for it and then offer. You also may want to skip a feeding or two before doing that.

Hi! This video has been really helpful for feeding my juvenile ball python. Recently, I’ve noticed that he’s still only taking f/t hopper mice and he should be past that based on my research (11 months old). when I tried a large mouse he struck and wrapped, but did not eat it. My question: should I stick with ol reliable (hopper mice) since he does eat those successfully, or continue to try large mice? For reference, he was raised on live, but i switched him to f/t. Thanks again for your wealth of info!
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons Год назад
He definitely needs to eat a larger size and my guess is that him not eating the prey last time might have been a coincidence. A larger size is usually not a problem for them. If it were me I would be trying to feed him rat pups. A ball python will eventually outgrow the largest mouse you can buy so switching them to rats is very helpful.

I have a question, I am new to ball pythons, only about 3 weeks in owning them. But I've had two situations now, once with my regular ball python, and once with my albino, what would cause my BP to look at the mouse, get in striking position, and then turn their attention to me instead? Last night my albino one actually got locked in on me, and I moved my leg a little outside the tank and she struck at the tank towards me. Does this mean that my body heat must have been hotter than that of the frozen/thawed mouse? I used warm water, and a hair dryer so they should have been warm enough. But both of them have now done that when I have fed them (not the striking, that was just my albino that struck in my direction, but they've both gotten focused on me) I just wanted to know your thoughts or explanations on it if you have any. 😊 Thank you! I LOVE your videos!

Question: at the and (and in other videos) you refer to seeing your snakes hunt while in their enclosure. What exactly does that look like? Something like more "crawling around" than usual, lots of short bursts with the tongue?
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 11 месяцев назад
Ball pythons are ambush hunters. So they find a spot to post up and patiently wait for something to run or fly by. You can usually tell that they're in more of an alert ambush position rather than resting/sleeping.
