I am getting a BEL female ball python as a rescue tomorrow. Poor girl is skinny and has spent a lot of her life in a tank thats about half the size it should be. After her quarantine and a few good meals, I hope to build trust with her and really deck out a tank for her (lots of good hides and things to explore). I appreciate these videos, as they are a great resource to return to when I want to double check that I wm doing things properly

Thanks! Its worked really well for me so far. Hair dryer probably isn't the most efficient for large collections but that trick works really well :-)

I recently adopted a beautiful bamboo firefly from a local reptile keeper and made sure to brush up on ball python care before receiving her. I got a ball python like a few weeks ago. Pretty sure its a boy. He's 1.5 or 2ft long. Very friendly, always coming to the glass wanting me to take him out. I got a few questions but I think I'm figuring it out. I always take him out and when I put him back he wants to come out.

Just found your channel and I love it! Funny, educational, and I love your easy going and non judgmental attitude. :) We are getting our first Ball Python next week, we have waited a whole month lol. We have a cornsnake that we haven't had for very long. My partner and I each picked a snake 🥰. So far our corn has eaten, but she is very shy and we only really see her at night when we don't have many lights on.

I have watched and read many care guides and information about natural environment, diet etc of ball pythons yet there's always more to learn. Who knew I'd be adding hairdryer and dog toy to my snake gear shopping list 😁 Very well explained the baby handling. I appreciate the details and explanations why they do what they do. Although I have watched ton of snake handling videos I got new stuff out of this one too. I'm so glad I stumbled on this channel. 👍👍 big time.

Excellent as always Bob, I got my boy on the 1st of January. He was 153g . I’ve been feeding him mice 26g. Next week I’m hoping to move him onto rats as he’s now 213g . I’ll definitely try that with the hair dryer!

I recently got my first bp and snake in general, I’ve had different reptiles before and now (gecko and bearded dragon) so moving to a snake was so exciting for me I love how soft they feel and how each of them have a personality (btw my bp is a girl and her name is Zuuel from ghost busters)

I’m late but I’m curious how everything’s going for you so far! I got mine on Sunday and just fed her today since the breeder had her on Thursdays and he said it should be fine to keep her on thursdays (she’s 5 months old).

This is so useful, thank you!! We just got our very first BP about ten days ago and we've been leaving her as alone in her enclosure as we can. She didn't eat the first week, but we'll try again this week and see if maybe she'll go for it now. Fingers crossed. We're trying to spend time around the enclosure just hanging out, but it's early days and I suspect she might be of a more nervous temperament overall. (Though she does get very bold and interested when new enrichment items enter her enclosure, which is hopefully a good sign.) Thank you for this! It seems like a good roadmap for a new baby ball.

I brought my snake home the day after they fed her, had no idea until she was placed in the box, I was so nervous, luckily she made it home safely and I placed her in a small enclosure still inside the box and waited another 2 days then looked her over, had her for almost a year now

I think that the importance of setting up an enclosure a few days early cannot be overstated. I started mine a few days before getting my first BP, and after just a few hours my DHP blew out, but this gave me enough time to grab a CHE at my local pet shop and make sure everything was ready.

I’m getting my first reptile, a Ball Python, tomorrow and this was a great video. The breeder I got him from has been amazing! I’m using reptichip and blacked out 3 sides of his enclosure. He’s not a baby, he’s about 8 months old and I am so excited!! I’m a 60 year old female and it’s about time I got my Ball Python as I’ve wanted one since I was 10. 🤣

The only thing I think you missed was related to human health. When you are handling your snake don't touch your face or put your hands in your mouth/nose/eyes. After you have handled the snake, your snake's habitat, etc., wash you hands with soap and water thoroughly. Snakes, like chickens, can have Salmonella bacteria on their skin - same as chickens, or chicken meat. It's not a big danger, but just avoid accidentally infecting yourself. And watching you with that snake: be really careful not to let the snake you're handling get inside a chair or a couch...sounds dumb, but it can be easy to get complacent about the snake moving about exploring and then the last thing you see is the tip of the tail disappearing in somewhere you can't follow. You can't call a snake and you seldom can entice them to come out for any reason. I knew someone who had to tear apart an $1200 sofa to locate and recapture their snake.

Those are good points! I'm much less concerned about salmonella from snakes though. It's possible for them to carry it but it's way less common than getting it from poultry. I've never known anyone who actually got it from a reptile... Definitely snake-proof the area they're crawling on. I let my big ones roam wherever the want in the room. Little ones get supervised. But absolutely don't let them get into the inner workings of furniture :-)

This is a great video. I don't have experience with snakes, but you answered alot of questions I had. The ball toy you showed was interesting. At the end you mentioned "enrichment items" to put into an enclosure. Could you elaborate on what those may be?

Sure, I have a number of other videos that talk about it, but pieces of wood, fake plants, cardboard boxes or any packaging you might normally throw away. I give that stuff to my snakes first and let them have it for a week or ao

I know your’e holding your snake during the video but I just want to make sure. Also should we have a heat pad under our quarantine enclosure? Yes, you can interact with your snake once they're settled into a quarantine enclosure. The quarantine enclosure needs to be set up just like a regular enclosure. They definitely need a heat gradient.

I just ordered my first ball python (it's 6 months old). He will be here next week. I am SO excited and nervous like a first-time-dad LOL! Thank you for this video. I hope everything will be as smooth as in your case. One question though: what are your thoughts on lowering the temperature at night, especially for young ball pythons? Should I keep the temperature constant until it's like 1 or 2 years old or start with the "nighttime" temperatures right away?

Congrats on your new snake! No need to lower the temps. Just make sure any lights are turned off so they have a day/night cycle :-)

Glad you're enjoying these! It depends on the snake - some get more time than others depending on how tolerant they are. Some are once or twice a week and others are almost every day :-)

If you're feeding live, it's best to just put the live rodent in rather than stunning the animal first just because you don't want to further torture the animal. I always recommend feeding frozen thawed if you can :-)
