Doug buys and sells exotic cars daily at Switchcars but as a child he fell in love with a certain black Ferrari F50. He followed it for over 20 years and tried to buy it several times but it has continued to elude him.

Spot on about the accessibility of cars today compared to the 90’s even early 2000’s. I totally agree that social media and the internet has shaped car culture and the ability to spot those "rare" birds. Not to mention that production numbers of these super cars are probably higher than in the 90s. Here in Austin TX, we vehicles like a 458, Huracán, or GT3 RS driving around town frequently. We also have a few collectors with deep pockets who would have been on your list as a child. Not to mention that our Cars & Coffee now attracts over 1000 cars.

I understand. In the late 80s in my small town a friend/friend of my dads had just bought a new 1987 black Ferrari Testarossa. I was 15 and that was THE CAR to me. My Dad one Saturday said get in we are going somewhere. Sure enough we pulled up into this guys driveway and his garage door opens and there is the Ferrari with the 12 cylinder purring in all it’s drive out tag midnight black glory ! He pulls it out, I look/lust over it takes some pics and ask questions and then a ⛈ happens and the bottom falls out. Tells me I’ll take you for a ride another day( had it just detailed etc) and put it back in the garage. Never got my ride but I still have that pic of me in it poster size 30 years later 😄

Aside from the fact that I absolutely love the F50, and I think it's sublime in black over any and every other color, I just wanna point out that Doug's recount of this car's interesting history is accurate, which is not an easy feat to accomplish with most Ferraris, let alone black F50s. Few months ago I went to Romans Autos in south London because they shared a picture of a red F50 which was my favourite since I've first seen the images of it. I would never dare to enter the shop, was usually walking around the cars outside and just looking through the glass, but my girlfriend at the time made both of us enter and I almost had a heart attack. So strong feelings to something I would never want to even own because I would be afraid to ever touch it.

I'm 16, still real young. But ive had a bit of experience with cars ( no hyper cars ) but I still get excited seeing some of the simplest cars. I saw an r32 the other day and it made my day. There an fd i see constantly but still get excited. A 2001 hummer h1 gets me happy. All of it makes me unbelievably happy even though I have the ability to see everything at shows sitting there, but its not the same. The first time I saw a countach we were out running errands and I freaked out. I say a murcielago, diablo, diablo sv, aventador s, etc in a dealer and didn't really care as much. Spotting it being driven in the wild is so much better than seeing it where you'd expect it to be.

Starting at 2:32, he brings up a very good and valid point on what it really used to be like when it came to wanting to be around exotic cars. Several years ago, it was NOT what it is today, as far as being able to see some crazy, ultra-rare exotic car do donuts in the middle of a highway: You can go to RU-vid right now and find several THOUSAND vids of people doing that very thing. The only time in the recent past that u really got exposed to that kind of awesome insanity was either you happened to actually BE THERE when it happened, or u found a DVD collection with a few hours of that crazy kind of stuff on it (yes, Dustin-- Thank you SO FRIKIN' MUCH for the "Mischief" series of DVD's) But that was it, really. Gonna be real, the sense of excitement when you see a hypercar has never been devalued for me even as someone who looks at cars online a lot. It's just a different vibe when you see a photo of a hypercar compared to when you see it yourself. Just the other day I saw a silver Evo VII in a drive-through, and for a while there used to be a white Evo VIII that I'd see every so often around town. One of my favourite sightings as well was seeing an orange Aventador in Perth, and a little outside of Perth, a white FC3S Mazda RX-7 in a parking lot.

The Ferrari F50 in Nero Daytona is my favorite road car ever (excluding a road legal F1 GTR LT). IMPORTANT: My friend the other day that knew I loved the F50 in black and sent me a picture from Arvada CO of one and I almost instantly shot it away as a fake photo. I then learned that it was a real Nero Daytona F50 and more important than that the car has been in hiding and no supercar registry (vinwiki, exclusivecarregistry, dupoint) has its vin in their system. This blew my mind and unfortunately I don’t have a picture of the license plate. It is amazing to know ones in Colorado, especially one that nobody knows about.

Early 2000's, my early teens, New Hampshire, snow outside and I'm looking at a bland warehouse but packed with brand new Vipers. What a memory.

When you own a black sports car, they look great clean but terrible dirty. Keeping it clean every day is a labor of love (a mandatory labor of love).

Helped paint cars for a little while with a guy up in north Georgia who used to do all the paint work for Ferrari of Atlanta. He also used to do a ton of work on all those exotic cars at his shop behind his house. He has a photo album of all these cars he's worked on there, and one time he had a red and a black F50 at his house at the same time! I'm like you, the black F50 has always been my favorite exotic car. I think there were only 4 ever made, and 3 were in the US. How rare is that?? AND, very unexpected too. I'd think there'd almost be as many black ones as there were red ones. So this guy Scott lives in this little subdivision and there were so many badass crazy expensive cars going in and out of his place that his neighbors got all worried that something illegal was going on, and I think it was the GBI who ended up coming out to investigate him, haha.

My local car group had a Sunday morning meet last summer at a Starbucks (43950 area code) and a private hauler pulled up to get some coffee. We took bets as to what was in the trailer. As the gentleman came out of Starbucks, he asked us if we wanted to see what was inside. As sure as God has sandals, it was a black F50 in the back of the trailer. We were asked not to take pictures as the owner could be upset that he was showing it. It was pretty cool seeing a black F50 that close.

When I was 14, I remember pretending to be an exotic owner so that I could interact with the guys on the local forums and find out what was going on with meets, rallies, etc.. This was in 2005 when there were much less exotics in the world in general. It was harder to seek them out. Your parents were much more gracious than mine though. I agree, it was quite special when you had to hunt down the exotics and take pics on your sony digital camera and post them to Flickr, and not an iPhone with Instagram. Some of the magic has definitely been lost over the years. But having been born into that generation is what really nourished my passion for cars.

I love Doug's reiteration of his past! He is a fantastic story teller who gives important points to the plot, but also stays on track to the story. Unfortunately for whatever reason when he sits in that chair he looks like he is in a wheelchair.

Similar experience to me attending Pasta Run's here in Perth. First time, I not only got to see my dream Testarossa, but I got to DRIVE it. The car that used to be owned by Eric Clapton. On subsequent runs, I've seen some exceptional cars, including La Ferrari and an F40.

Vin Wiki can I tell you the story of when I bought my 3 dream cars which are below. Remember this is 1992 when CD's and Fuel injection were rare let alone the feature listed on these cars below. 1991 Honda Prelude (4ws, ABS, TCS, Climate Control, Power fold mirrors, B20A Engine - Efi, DOHC, 16v) 1992 Honda Accord (4ws, ABS, TCS, Climate Control, Power fold mirrors, Airbag, Integrated Antenna, keyless entry, F20A engine - Efi, DOHC, 16v) and 1992 Honda Delsol SiR (Transtop, ABS, TCS, ,Climate Control, AirBag, LSD, B16A Engine - Efi, DOHC, 16v & Vtec) For the knowledgeable and enthusiast, you will know each one is the Halo of each model, where just one of these feature is considered extremely rare stateside rare let alone combined and from factory fitted. These are like Albino Unicorn horns making each one an Extremely rare example in its own right. Would love to share my story.
