In this video I find Rocky Mountain smoky quartz in a small pocket. I show what I found on the surface that sparked my interest, and then the video picks up in my test hole where I am finding good signs that leads to a crystal pocket! I thought the pocket ended; but upon subsequent trips I discovered the pocket continued with some wonderful specimens! Stay tuned for more footage of this awesome quartz pocket where I'm finding crystals!

Best way to find them is to GET OUT THERE AND ADVENTURE. Yes, do your research but make it a point to really take the time to be intentional about being outside, trying something new, and letting nothing hold you back. My girlfriend Nicholette is a prime example of someone who does just that, shes in a wheelchair but is relentless about being outside. Live free, friends

I took a hiking trip through the Sierra Nevada. At the start of the hike we were surrounded by mountains and we were in a grassy valley type of area. I see a whitish rock sticking out of the ground that for some reason caught my eye, just had an interesting shape. I stopped my group to dig it up and once I fully uncovered it I had a 7 inch long beautiful rock. I thought I found something magical but was informed it was quartz and all over in that area but the piece I found was definitely worth holding onto. I cleaned it up and still have it from that trip. It has flat sides but is far from perfectly flat and eventually realized it was milky quarts but still cool

@@obliqrecordingsawesome video dude! had to sub! 👍🏻 where are you located? i do a lot of crystal hunting/Rockhounding here in South Wales (UK) but the only nice truly clear and Euhedral piece of Quartz i've managed to find that had a terminated top and faces was about the size of a piece of corn and was a lucky surface find at a local river! usually it's things like Hematite, Calcite, Gypsum, Jasper and some Agates that pack the nice banding, my real interest and what i collect are Quartz and Fluorite! it's frustrating sometimes as apart from combing beaches, river banks and old quarries i don't know 'what to look out for' i'd love to know how you came across this lovely pocket? was it a surface find or something specific such as the area or terrain?
@obliqrecordings

@@jimmymcgill2557 These were filmed in Colorado USA. I do a lot of prospecting and where I see pegmatite and/or quartz/feldspar chunks on the surface I do test holes and follow them uphill to their (hopeful) source. Maybe 1 out of every 25 or so holes leads to crystals, so lots of effort but when it pays off it really is great! This particular crystal pocket I hit right away by kicking over a quartz rock mostly buried in the dirt; there were flat sides all over the buried side. One test hole later and a fully euhedral crystal came out, and then I followed them deeper into their source, as you saw.

Great stuff!! I'm just getting into actually digging for crystals; my family owns 80 acres in Estes Park, CO and for years I've collected pebbles and fragments of quartz lying around. I feel certain there is at least one pocket of something somewhere here, lots of big quartz granite/mica chunks piled up in various places. My question is, how far down do you normally need to dig? Do you usually dig straight down from where a large promising rock is found? I'm almost certain I've found graphic granite and perhaps even pegmatite, I do have a field guide and have been working to identify things on my own, but am eager to my hand in the dirt 😁
@obliqrecordings

I will have to research if there are pegmatite formations around estes. I know north of you there is amythest and quartz, but they grow in different formations than in the Pikes Peak Batholith. Can you quickly explain why a Pegmatite would have a pocket? Isn't a pegmatite solid rock? Or are you hoping that the crystal grew in the pegmatite fell out once Feldspar and Mica weathered away?
@obliqrecordings
@obliqrecordings 3 года назад
The crystals can grow wherever there is room; the host rocks have cracks due to shifting over time where the crystal fluids can travel to. Some pockets I find in place, and others I find because I follow the crystals that have weathered out back up the hill to their source.

I’m just now actually getting into the “Rock hound” and mining community, didn’t even know that there was a name for people like us 😂 but anyways my question is, if I find a nice quarts or a nice geo on the ground, do I just start digging in that area or beneath where I found it? How do I go about doing that? I’m trying to learn how to determine where nice pockets are to start digging

where is this, and what are the signs of knowing you're on the right trail?
@obliqrecordings
@obliqrecordings 4 года назад
This is near Pikes Peak Colorado. The crystals in the Pikes Peak Batholith form in pegmatite. You know you're on the trail if you are finding rocks that have larger segments of feldspar and quartz together. When the hot liquid cools the rocks crystalize, if the concentrations of minerals are right, and the temperature and pressure and other factors are all aligned, then the crystals will form in cavities or cracks in the host rock. Then over time the host rock decomposes (sometimes) and leaves the crystals. I keep an eye out for flat sides on quartz or the feldspar and pegmatite on the surface and also when I dig test holes. I have some articles on my blog that go into more detail with pictures too... davealex.com

It's hard to tell, many times the quartz I dig is not crystalized. Look for red stains on the quartz and surrounding dirt, and follow it.

@@jameshughes131 crystals need space to grow generally, so they would be in cavity or opening or seam. Commonly there is space around the crystals in those openings and iron minerals come in and coat the crystals after they are formed. So following the iron staining could lead to crystals

Howdy, Crystals can he found most everywhere in the nation, however their formation is likely limited to very specific places where the ultra rare growth conditions occurred. I recommend checking out rockhounding books from the library or local Internet groups. Good luck finding a cool place near you!

You just look for crystals, parts and pieces, or pegmatite indicators. Sometimes I just dig a test hole where quartz or feldspar is exposed. What you are asking is the hardest part, if it was easy then there would be no crystals left! I feel you have to dig a lot of test holes and move a lot of dirt!
