This week, I'm running you through the processes I use for tidying up my pottery after they've been reduction fired. This includes polishing clean their bases and grinding lids in-situ with carborundum paste. I also remove 'waddings' and using grinding discs. Links to most things mentioned can be found below.
I know each potter tends to have different ways of grinding the bottoms of their pots, so if you've got any other ideas, techniques or interesting methods please do share in the comments!

Wadding recipe: 50% china clay, 50% coarse alumina hydrate, mix powders and then add water very slowly as the mixture tends to turn too watery very easily. So better to take it slow. Once it has a clay like consistency you can wedge it up and store it in an air tight container.

Thanks for following up on this, Florian. This is a step in your workflow that I've been curious about for quite some time now after you've shared tidbits of it in the past. I've taken to using 4-inch diamond polishing pads that are used with a drill for my mugs & bowls. Only issue so far with them is that any wet sanding you try to do quickly becomes dry and you get dust everywhere; gotta do it outside and with a mask on.

Chemico also make a water based grinding paste used for lapping mower blades that I've used on my lids having seen your earlier video. It works like a charm and easy to wash off.

Thank you for going over the warning about cracked overflow glaze. It boggles my mind that somebody would run their hand over that when it's pretty much broken glass!
@floriangadsby
@floriangadsby Год назад
Sometimes even I do it still... careless in the moment but it is an easy mistake. I've seen some truly terrible injuries as a result, thankfully nothing on my end but my glazes are pretty stable these days and runs that result in sharp shards are very rare.

as someone who primarily fires in electric for glazing it’s interesting to see this side of ceramics i don’t get to that often!

Pleased to hear so, Alex. Lots of these techniques are still applicable to electric firing - waddings especially. Glazing the underside of pots too, with wadding places onto the pieces, another route that's not often taken as it adds the additional steps of having to grind them back, but there's not much else as lovely as a fully glazed foot/base. Thanks for watching as always.

Went to the dentist today. Asked to watch your videos while having a filling replaced. Wasn't a good time but definitely better. Then went to do glazing for the rest of the day. Thank you for the channel x

Could you do an overview of the different firing types you mentioned? They sound very interesting and you have a clear and fascinating way of explaining things

Just had to sa y that mug you show at time stamp 6:04 is astonishingly beatiful! It was really interesting to see how you had to be mindful of the color change on the pot and to not grind it too much. Thanks for the video!

It's my favourite mug from my time at Maze Hill Pottery, from thousands made. A very special piece from my time learning the craft... I love it! Too much to even use it its so precious. Thanks for watching!

The silicone grip pad seems like a perfect thing to stick your lid to, as silicone and glass have a really high 'sticktion' and since the main ingredient in glaze is... glass, well, I think the sticky pad might work wonders. I might also look into a water or oil based grinding compound that you can apply with a brush, as, I think the process of, plop on wheel, paint grit, grind, done might get you through the pots much faster. Actually, polishing windshield cleaner (rain-x) might be a surprisingly good candidate. Its grit goes up as it grinds, and it's water based. Cleaning water based stuff is far easier

You could use the sticky mat to polish the lids to the vessels, if you run it on low speeds

To polish my knives and blades I use an aluminium oxide based car polish. It is cheap but effective. It has more of a toothpaste consistency. But you shouldn't use it for that. ;)

Florian, thanks for this video. The two new things I learned were the pottery wadding and the grinding paste. The grinding paste is the same process, called lapping, which mechanics will use to seat a valve in an engine so that the two surfaces mate with no leaks. When you use the wadding, do you stick the wadding to the pot or do you just rest the pot on top of the little balls to keep it off the kiln shelf? Thanks!

What grit do you use when you’re just sanding with the wet/dry paper?

Great tips. Do you wear a mask when sanding/grinding? I'd worry about the dust that would get in my lungs. I know the water helps but......

Very nice ! I was wondering if just a silicon mat on the wheel would suffice to grind the pots with lid ?
@floriangadsby
@floriangadsby Год назад
A few others have suggested that! I can’t wait to test it tomorrow as I have a few jars that need grinding - will film it if it works nicely.
