Hi everyone, thanks for joining the Premiere! What did you think??? I would love to get your thoughts to help me with Part 2. Also, if there were questions that I didn't get to answer, feel free to leave it here! 😊
Love it! It’s amazing how you shared processes in a clear and helpful way to let us try those exercise you did it. Keep going, I think it’s quite unique what you do here. It’s not just about tips, it’s a deeper explanation of creative exercises. Love it how you study Mies’s grid and people performing into the space :) Looking forward to see the next part! Danila
Ah, the overly verbose explanations we have to use for our school presentations and research versus explaining it in layman's terms for the general public. Good times. I really enjoyed the video and projects you shared. That was a really cool video project. The only critique is I felt a bit misled by the title because I thought you were going to speak more about the research process and how you find inspiration and information from it. Regardless, I'm looking forward to seeing all the work you've created which led you to your thesis. On another note, I was at that 2015 bienniale in Chicago, and now I'm watching your videos. Funny how our shared interests indirectly links us once again. Serendipity in action my internet and architecture friend.
@@TheDanilampis Thank you!! I was actually originally going to make a "how to do an architectural thesis" type video with a list of points but pretty soon realized that what's more interesting and helpful to capture is the indirect / non linear journey of a thesis project... Design research is a beautiful thing and it would have been unfair of me to dumb it down into a simple set of points!
@@tomviethoang Ahh cool! Internet is truly the best tool for serendipity. (I hope chicago has another biennale, I love that city.) Yeah actually as I was editing this video, I was hoping that I'd captured more about the research process itself, but I was having a hard time describing it in a succinct way that would also be interesting in a video format. I would like to make a video like that, and maybe it'll get captured in Part 2!
I really loved the way you re-wrote your thesis topic in plain English. I make my thesis prep students do precisely this to ensure that any college educated reader can follow their work. It saves them a lot of headaches down the road.
I love that!!! There's so many interesting / important ideas in academia that it's a shame it stays in that realm. I am fortunate in that I have a circle of friends who are not in architecture. Many times, I was shocked to find that words I used so commonly were made up / nonsense to people outside the field, haha. Lots of unlearning happened for me after graduating.
Such a fantastic presentation of the real struggle of developing an idea for an architectural thesis project. I wish I had the comic strip assignment for mine. Seems like it really forces you to break through all of the theoretical jargon and distill the ideas into an easily digestible road map of when you hope to take your ideas. Looking forward to part 2!
Thank you!! The comic strip was definitely one of those projects that really make you question your education while you're doing it, but you see the value in it afterwards. 😂
I’ve also been to the Chicago biennale in 2015 🙂. My former advisor Momoyo Kaijima was exhibiting in the central library. By coincidence I went to present on a congress while on my first year of the PhD course.
thank you for being theperson that has singlehandedlyy always reminded me why i chose this field and making fallin love with it over and over agin, every time i fall prey to the crits and juries and their overhwhelming pressure
Hi Dami, I am not remotely associated with Architectural studies but I immensely enjoy watching your videos! Your videos really help me find a calm moment to learn a thing or two about design and life in general! Keep posting such videos!
honestly speaking ,, TBH??? to be H? TB honest?? anyway, man your thumbnails be making it kinda hard to resisit clicking and watching the vid LOL. and you probably know that XD , anyway i do enjoy listening to you speak, quite refreshing. and ontop of all that i actually learn something.. talk about a WIN WIN WIN
Hey Dami👋 This was very helpful and an inspiring way to approach architecture. Even though I'm not a big fan of postmodernism, and I still don't quite see the way typological cannibalism helps sustainability, I am very inspired to learn myself. Thank you!
@@DamiLeeArch I want to write about what makes a Place. What are the parameters we need to consider and what is the role of an architect in place-making
Hi Ms. Dami, you wouldn't even notice me but i just wanna say thank you for teaching me everything in your architectural video, it helps me a lot before starting my school. Thank you for being my inspiration ❤️🥺
Really well articulated (your thesis proposition). I did not find the first version too "wordy" though, the second version is genuinely better. Kuddo's for thinking through these tough, often unspoken observations of the world around us.
I have thought about this a lot when I started making youtube videos. There's so many interesting ideas in architecture (and in other fields) but there's a language barrier that makes it hard to access for the masses. This one is a small example but I just can't help but cringe when I look at some of my old writing. 😆
I love your videos! I’m going into my first year of architecture in this fall and I’m so glad I’ve stumbled upon your channel in the meantime. All your videos and so thoughtful and inspiring :)
wow i'm amazed at how personal the video became for the end and compared with all your videos in general. I am starting my 2nd year of master's and I feel totally identified. Like if i was talkikg to myself hahaha Looking forward for 2nd part and to be able to watch it during the premiere u.u
Yes!! Join us for the Premiere next time :) I'm glad you liked the ending - these videos are experimental.. No particular storyline, and sometimes I feel very strongly that I need to add a personal anecdote 😆
About to start my Architectural Thesis for my last year in Architecture School and whilst it's still summer, I am currently studying different data, searching unique topics, and most especially, knowing my own conviction. This video helped a lot, but is Part 2 already out? Would want to know more :D
So basically, you went into a library in the architecture theory section and picked up a book which every architecture professor heared about? Furthermore, you proposed to change literally the whole build environment and work-spaces of the western world. K
As I'm also a researcher before, the replacing of academic style writing part makes me laugh, it's true that academic writing is not engaging for common readers, look boring and harder to read, we human brain like to see some personality, open ended, encourage communications and even better if it can be story telling style of writings.
Ima start watching your videos because they seem really interesting and Im just entering 9th grade but I want to learn more about things that will really help me think more about the future
your discussion path bounces between a labyrinth and a maze, which is close to representing your creative process, if your Part II segment follows this "pinballing" you will help us better appreciate your creative struggling, ... please feel brave to talk about what inspirations occurred and what failed, please talk about waiting periods (when you could not proceed), and whether you had to retrace your steps, .. look forward to your Part II
Did I mention labyrinth / maze on my channel? I was so intrigued by the process itself, that they became central concepts in my thesis project. Also, yes, the "pinballing" is something I'd wished I'd captured more of in this video as I was making it, but found it quite challenging to describe, especially in video format that's supposed to be engaging / interesting for people. I definitely hope to capture more of it in Part 2!!
it is difficult to avoid mind reordering when describing a creative process in retrospect as opposed to describing in prospect because of the mind's tendency to re-order chronological sequence or priority sequence, ... perhaps, a tutorial format, or say a Q&A format with say a colleague, perhaps later on, if you have the time to do this, will help us (the struggling lay public) better appreciate the prospective issues,
The very science of Architecture and the entire nature of Civil Engineering have undergone such a drastic changes, mostly evolutionary, that a mere narration of them may need volumes of books!!! Your phesis a must scope on that system!!Our Earth 🌎 is a cosmic body. It is an insignificant spect of dust in the Universe! The Universe itself is a vast infinite expanse of Space and Matter ,,,I owe Thanks for sharing your Thesis!Think of 'The Stella System "and The Solar System!and our architecture in that scope of engineering Geology!!!looking forward for your next video!
16:05 It would be more understandable to the typical city dweller if it was written more like this. What I wrote is still far to cerebral (too many big words and too long) for our soundbite culture. "It's important to create a beautiful and user friendly environment unique to the complex and dynamic nature of our urban neighborhoods without destroying the sense of home for the residents. Typological cannibalism uses shock value to create a sense of discomfort, self awareness and a feeling of alienation in the new environment. Hopefully leading to new stronger and more integrated relationships. Sustainability starts with the people." - me 🤣 Better might be: People like to be proud of their home. Typological cannibalism will wake them up
DamiLee Thanks. Having finished my Capstone (Urban Design) in 2017, this was a fun trip down that lane though much of my Capstone still drives my investigations. I’ll comment more fully after Part 2
I didn't know what Capstone was, so thanks for sharing! I would love to learn more about the similarities / differences btw. an architectural and urban design thesis.
typological" refers to the study, classification, or categorization of architectural forms, building types, or design patterns based on their common characteristics and functions. It's a term used to describe the analysis and understanding of different building or design types within a specific context or culture. The word "cannibalism" is generally understood to refer to the act of consuming the flesh or organs of a member of the same species. Doesn't make sense to bring those words together.
Using images of emaciated and starving African children as props to elicit emotion is a harmful and offensive form of racism. It reduces the humanity of these children to nothing more than a means to an end, and perpetuates harmful stereotypes about African people. It is important to be respectful and considerate when using images of others, especially when it comes to sensitive topics such as poverty and suffering. It is never appropriate to use images of vulnerable individuals for personal gain or to manipulate the emotions of others.
A lesser man would be intimidated by your profound intelligence not me I'm up for the challenge I want to learn everything you have to teach me and oh yeah the architecture too I guess
Hey Dami. Love your video. Would you consider doing a demonstration video on how you use your mouse? You got me curious and I'm interested in how you use it to help with your workflow. Thanks
