Just going to heap on another comment of gratitude. I love the fact that you talk about your insecurities in the build. I get in gridlock with my "what am I going to do" moments. Especially because I have never even framed a single wall. I really appreciate Containing luxury, but I like that you take it a step further. Your video on installing the window buck was perfect. Thanks again. I purchased your 3D model. I am not going to use it as is, but for $20 dollars it will save me countless hours of trying to master Sketchup.

Easily support it I'd say, I was surprised they need a lambeam like that with the building already steel and then the doubled-up rafters; that's a big advantage of shipping container no need to tear off the roof to add storey

Great work. I have built three container homes now in the past 12 years and yours is looking fantastic. Those big lumps of metal in the corners need to be well insulated as they can give off a lot of condensation in winter, I learnt that the hard way.
@andrewfellingham8388
@andrewfellingham8388 Год назад
Cold weather condensation is a killer - especially when you have materials that will absorb that moisture and mold. I bet you can use spray foam to build a conformal coat for those areas (even if you don't spray foam anywhere else) to go a long way to resolving this. Either buy the small cans or buy a small DIY kit. Anything that will keep warm, moist air from hitting large surfaces of cold metal.

This may be answered in the comments somewhere else. But did the engineer really see the need for the laminated beams, and all of the headers, as none of this is actually load-bearing?
@thinkoutsidethecontainer
@thinkoutsidethecontainer 2 года назад
That's a fair question. My engineer took some inspiration from a container home in California, obviously he made them to pass Florida Building Code but some of the "overbuilt" elements were definitely taken from that California build, because apparently California can have some real absurdly stringent standards, at least for an unconventional structure like a container home. Now as I'm not a structural engineer I can't say whether it was overbuilt or not. As a thought experiment, I'd love to come up with a container home design that requires ZERO framing...not sure if possible though as far as where to put insulation....

Why would engineer call for double joists when they are under zero roof load and only used to hang drywall.
@thinkoutsidethecontainer
@thinkoutsidethecontainer 2 года назад
The engineer told me that at the 16 foot spans, he needed I think 2x10 or maybe it was 2x12. That would have lowered my ceiling to less than 8 feet. In order to keep an 8 foot ceiling he told me the double 2x8 would work. In other words if I wanted to only use single rafters it would have required I think 2x12's which would have lowered my ceiling too much

I just can't believe your engineer & building department are making you build an entire structural house frame inside of the structurally sound containers. Did they not realize these get fully loaded and can be stacked as many as nine high? I can maybe see the lintels and the beam over the pass through opening but the walls and the double ceiling joists???
@thinkoutsidethecontainer
@thinkoutsidethecontainer 2 года назад
The double ceiling joists we're suggested by my engineer in order to keep ceiling 8 feet high. He basically told me that at a 16 foot span they had to be either single 12 inches tall joists or double 2x8. If single 12 inch it would have dropped ceiling well below 8 feet. Thoughts?

Wow! Extremely professional framing job. It looks like we have started our projects at around the same time. Framing is going to be a daunting task for me. Thank you for explaining indepth how you have overcome the 24ft span across 3 containers. I will take the information you have provided into consideration when I begin framing. However, it looks like i will need to incorporate more steel.
@thinkoutsidethecontainer
@thinkoutsidethecontainer 2 года назад
Are you using 3 containers as well? Or more? Anyways, yeah that's one reason why the structural engineer I hired was key: he was able to give me confidence in the kind of steel reinforcement I would need for the setup I have. That was my personal experience and of course every situation is different so I can only speak to my experience.
@steveng216
@steveng216 2 года назад
My project is a total of 13 containers. I stacked 9 40ft hi cubes 3 stories and then used 4 20ft hi cubes perpendicular as a stairwell. My project is very far from finished. Its just stacked structure with well, septic, and 300amp electrical service in place. Costs are higher than expected. Lumber and steel prices are no joke.

I wonder if there's a reddit group to discuss more. Because of how small and sharp he turns in the subdivision where I bought my lot is, I'm making my home out of 10x 20ft containers (sad because I really wanted the high cube height that's easier found in the 40ft high cube versions). Two storeys and about 5 containers back-to-back on the longer side. Getting and engineer by default to make the plans since its a statutory where im from but the more ideas to squeeze value out of these setups the better!

curious why you framed in headers and 2x8 ceiling joists throughout, since the container itself (supposedly) gives all the structure you need? Is it because once you cut a hole anywhere in the side, the container is no longer considered structural? If this is the case, why not weld a single plate along the entire upper length to ensure integrity and allow you to frame however you want inside? at 45:35 u detail the rafters and I see they are not even flush to the container's ceiling... so wtf are they required to even be doubled-up as if they were 'structural' at all? They clearly are NOT supporting any roof so wtf are they required for at all?? this doubled your cost (2x more 2x8 than required) and tripled the work (we both know the weight and hassle of installing a double vs a single). I don't get it, other than your engineer put in a pseudo-stick frame construction under an existing, structural metal roof where one or the other was needed but definitely not both. Especially since it appears you live in an area with zero to minimal snow load. I mean, despite cutting window and door holes in that metal wall, it will easily hold a few inches of snow ez pz. The door and window header I can see being required, but not at all to the over-built level I am seeing here. I LOVE your detail, this was extraordinarily helpful, but bro, the added costs I see for what appears to be an engineer-gone-wild-who-also-ignored-his-own-basic-building-rules seems, at best, an avoidable money-sink of over-building. Please help me understand what I am missing here?

Amazong work. Im trying to convince my architecture tutors that containers can be cheaper than conventional construction. Is thta truth? It could be better a comparison beetwen two types of construction

I can only speak from my personal experience, and not professional advice, but I would say the only real potential cost difference between a traditional home and a container home is the exterior shell of the home. Once you start building out inside the house it's very much the same process

My God, this is serious overkill! A shipping container is already a box...and a quite strong one at that. You're building an insanely strong wooden box inside of an already strong steel box. All that wood is for structural support, but it's not needed in a structurally sound steel box. It defeats the purpose of using shipping containers in the first place. Sure, if you remove walls from the containers, you'll need to reinforce with a beam or two, but your house looks like it's meant to withstand a 10.0 earthquake! I'm using 2x3s in the valleys of the corregated steel walls so that I can attach wall panels. Spray foam insulation will fill all the voids.

I don't disagree it was excessive on the framing. I just did what the structural engineer told me to do

If you were to take away the outer shell of the shipping container,you'll literally building a house out of wood.No different than the standard structure of a house.Only difference your not adding outer flat wood and coverings.But if this your first time building a home,you could of fooled me.The inside wooden structure looks very professional.So in my eyes your a contract construction worker.You look like a contract builder.But at least you own the land and house for around maybe $65,000 in total.Homes in California is $500,000 and up.

The inner structure of shipping container homes are often built exactly like traditional homes, yes
