Over the last year I have gotten over $18,000 of free wood from tree service companies and from people who had wood to give away that I have made into firewood I will sell this next year. You can do the same thing and I will tell you how in todays video. #firewood

Mornin Y’all! A few tree service companies here have their own private dumps so about once a week I’ll make my rounds getting a cord or two. My wife compares that to me going fishing because I get all my tools/saws ready and trailer hooked up the night before. Great way to get Christmas money.

Hi Chris, You work very hard for your money. Have you ever thought about getting a splitter for your tractor/skidsteer for the large rounds? Something like a Splitfire? It would make your downsizing of the tree service wood a whole lot easier. I have a home made Splitter on my mini-ex, not the fastest machine to split with but no effort required . Love he vids and the attention to detail you put out!

Large wood chippers (whole tree) are called Tub Grinders. Used mainly on land clearing projects or clear cut projects. Morbark is the most well known manufacturer. Would be very uncommon for tree service unless they bring their logs to the grinder. More trivia.

Actually tub grinders grind tree debris. A "Whole Tree Chipper" does just that it chips a whole tree that is fed into a chipping head and then the chips are usually blown into trailers or possum belly's. I have a bandit 3590xl on tracks it is matched up with a chain flail striper to remove leaves, small branches and bark. I can chip a 26" diameter tree unlimited length. I can't do that in my Diamond Z tub grinder. Have a great day.

I know you talked about what damage certain bugs do to wood under the bark in a previous video but I would like to see a video about if, or how you deal with pests in the wood as it dries. I recently came across a pretty impressive section of wood infested with termites while cutting. I'm not worried about it because of how and where I store my wood as it dries but things like termites and ants can be a major problem for people. I was wondering if you take any steps to insure your wood is bug free for customers or if you talk to your customers about how to safely store wood to prevent home infestations.
@InTheWoodyard
@InTheWoodyard 11 месяцев назад
We do not have termites here but I can tell you ...keep the wood off of the ground and in a open sunny windy area and get it dry as fast as you can and when dry the bugs will avoid it, they need moisture. Thanks for watching!
@christopherhaak9824
@christopherhaak9824 11 месяцев назад
Keep the wood dry, that gets rid of most of them. If I have a batch of bad wood, I sprinkle it with borax as I stack it, it does a number on the bugs and it pretty benign and can be burned.

With ash trees coming down in mass, I get logs dropped at my location for free. I got several dump trailers full of black oak, honey locust, and ash this last year. Just finished up splitting what I needed for my two shops, and my house this year. I still have probably five or six cords of good wood waiting to be split I may turn into firewood bundles for next years camping season.

I literally came across your vids a few weeks ago after I got a free electric 7 ton splitter cause my brother in law is moving cross country, and after two years of only a few outdoor fires because we had another baby. Now that he’s almost three, I’ve removed the padded cover to the hearth and have been having some fires in the fire place. my gas saw took a crap, so bought a battery powered chain saw and am cleaning up a few dead standing in the back woods at the rear of my small property. Now I’m googling processing equipment and dump trailers. My wife may come after both of us. You have been warned.

There's a tree guy who's done work for me before who has a chipper that will take a 16 inch log... but the biggest he puts in is about 8, maybe 10 inch... 2 reasons: 1) trees here are tough, and he likes the extra power, and 2) anything bigger than that, he takes back to his yard, where he has a processor that'll make multiple cubic metres an hour. Now that's how you make money - get paid to take away wood that you sell as firewood....😂👍💵 🪓🇦🇺

Municipal dumps are s good place to look as well. Im talking about where the local highway dept/village/ town takes all the brush, trees etc they pick up or clean out. In a heavily treed area like im in, it piles up fast - youd be amazed at how much wood is there. Don't know if theyd be happy with commercial sellers on and out constantly, but they're usually happy to have residents come get it. Less that they jave to do something with. The village dump is my secret source for hard maple and walnut to burn, lol Tree service wood is even more fun for those of us without hydraulics, lol. As often as not, those monster logs from yard trees are also twisty, gnarly, and tough. Especially silver maple and cottonwood- those trees can get monstrous sized around me. Cottonwood isnt worth the bother, unless you can get some small, strat, younger limbs. Silver maple, otoh, is ideal campfire or fireplace wood. Smells great burning, too. It can be tough to split though.

I guess I lucked out on the silver maple I split the other day. The only parts that gave me problems had knots.
@pyroman6000
@pyroman6000 6 месяцев назад
@@karlrovey Ya it can be like that. I cut some chunks the other day of green silver maple, that split very easily. Imo, the problems come from yard trees. Esp the butt log- which is nearly always curly grained, and from limbs that grow out, rather than up. That wood is tougher, because it has to be to hold all that weight. If the center is way off to the side, that's a good sign of a log that'll be a bitch to split.

So many free wood stories which to share... There was a tree service working at the top of our road with his truck loaded with rounds i stopped and said "Hey is that for me?" The guy looked at me like he was deep in thought and said "Well it's Friday afternoon and i have to drive 45 minutes to my shop, dump this, and come back to load up again". I said "I live a mile down the road". So i got probly 3 cords of Osage Orange dumped in my driveway for free, only one of the best woods there is. The bonus was my father and i BOTH had osage oranges fall out of the trees and dent our hoods on that section of road over the years and now they were gone. I wonder if you don't have any mulch suppliers where you are. We have 2 'Mulch Farms' near us where you pay to dump and they sell the mulch. They have piles of mulch must be a hundred feet tall there. Kind of impressive. They have Tub Grinders there but you can only really get an 8 to 10 foot log in before they fall out. Vermeer calls their whole tree chipper a "whole tree chipper" ha ha. Has a belt feeder and rising mill to take in anything mostly fed my a grapple loader. Whew long comment today. Too much coffee! Funny, that guy had no concept of winter firewood for heating a home, He thought wood was mostly for backyard fire pits. That said, he should think about getting a wood stove for winter heating... He really seems to love the ambiance and warmth of a fire and would enjoy it year round! Hey another way to get free wood (though not for large scale operation like yours, but for personal use) is to scrounge for it yourself. Every year I scrounge myself 5 cords of free and great hardwood which is what my wood stove eats all winter to heat my NJ home. I live in a pretty dense suburb within commuting distance of NYC. So not big properties here, so I have the ability to get wood, but never a huge amount at a time. A little at a time is fine for me and I chip away at it steady as a sort of hobby. It also takes a pretty physical effort at times lifting big logs up the bank of a river. I keep a battery powered chainsaw in my car at all times on the ready for any roadside dead-fall or cut down limbs someone pushed to the curb and then I check wild lots, small parks, edges of industrial yards, and even cemeteries back lots where they throw their dead tree limbs. I also check my local dump once a week for small scores that will fit in my cars hatchback, but it adds up because I never waste a trip to work or the store without looking for a quick wood score... and we have premo wood here in Jersey!

My buddy is a big tree service and always busy but Ive seen them as far south as over an hour away so not sure if the market dried up for the time being or what but his log yard is huge with piles and piles of big wood and he said have at it but by the time I load up my skid steer, get there and pick through it and get back to my shop it's probably a half day for 2-3 cords of wood but I bought a Frostbite grapple and skid steer splitter just for this big wood but now wondering if it's worth it. I can get a try axle of poles delivered and stacked right at my shop for 800-950 bucks a load and end up with 7-10 cords.

May I ask what is going rates for a face cord of hardwood firewood. I want to make sure I am keeping my prices current. Western Ny
@InTheWoodyard
@InTheWoodyard 11 месяцев назад
I depends on your market. I get $120 a face cord but 1 hour west it's $60 and 1 1/2 south it is $175 in Chicago it is $250

Would you think about selling ten cords to some guy in Chicago $320.00 per cord if he came and picked'em up?

Also a square metre or a cubic metre or a cube. = Roughly a face cord.

I was told a cubic meter was about .82 of a face cord???

Good vid today ,thanks, There is a wee bit of misnomer Associated with the term " Free Wood" When you include The time ,the effort , equipment to process and fuel. There seems to be some cost involved. There are a minority of Americans that hear the term " Free" and associate it with laying in bed and playing video games. 🙄

@InTheWoodyard
@InTheWoodyard 10 месяцев назад
That is the going rate in my area, in Chicago it sells for $700-800 a cord and 50 miles west of me it sells for $150-180 a cord. More trees less people = cheap wood and lots of people and no trees = expensive wood.
@Alan_Hans__
@Alan_Hans__ 11 месяцев назад
You need to simplify your wood terms. Just stick to 1.2m3 rather than face cord, 1/3 cord, rick, truckload etc.

That would be un-AMERICAN!

Good advice! Especially about the free gooder wood. - Your customer said something that could be valuable advice: "Thanks for the speedy delivery." So now you're not playing Superman, you're copying Speedy Gonzales, the fastest mouse in all Maheco, and Wisconsin!! - All the folks worried about global warming don't know about you and Kenny. Selling so much firewood that it's all your fault. Just wait 'til I tell on you!! I only hope the head of the global heat police is not one of your customers! - Bert is always helping out. Do you ever get a chance to help him? GNI
