Picking up a new language is so difficult to me, you are so brave choosing living in a Mandarin speaking city alone~ and your Mandarin is so fluent now, can switch between English and Mandarin without thinking. Do you have any tips/suggestions when you were learning Mandarin ?

Giovena Wang haha yeah it’s quite daunting. I think the best tip is to just not be scared of making mistakes. I wasn’t improving because I wasn’t speaking cos I was scared of making mistakes. We can’t learn if we don’t make mistakes! And just try to speak to as many locals as possible :)

Hi Jenny! You mentioned how third year and fourth year students can go out to sort of work/intern, I'm curious how they got the jobs/internships. Do they have agents? If so, how did they obtain one? And do you feel like there are a lot of career options available for students who graduate from the academy without having obtained an agent somehow? Also, I'm curious about daily student life like the type of social atmosphere that you experienced. I've always seen on Chinese modern dramas where there'd be a sisterhood type of thing such as Ode to Joy or there'd be a total catty clique situation. There was also always like a campus beauty or famous campus couple. Was it anything like that for you? One stupid question I have is, did you ever need to take math related courses? And my final question is, do you feel like there's an age bias in the entertainment industry against females past a certain age? I ask that because a lot of the stars nowadays seem super young (like 16-20) or debut very early before going to study (like Jackson Yee or Guan Xiao Tong), and I'm curious what the academy's opinion on late bloomers who study late and enter the field in their mid to late-20's is. Sorry for asking so many questions, but thank you so much for being one of the few English speaking resources willing to share your experience on a public platform!

wow this is a BIG question haha i'll try to answer what I can remember. you get the agencies yourselves through connections and knowing people and meeting people there really isn't a formula to it and it's up to you. a teacher might help you out but that's also very rare, you just have to kind of hustle it out yourself haha. i feel like you can't really freelance in china so you do need to get an agent. A lot of people who graduate don't go into performing or acting, some do a completely different career or some may become teachers. i found my class to be a bit cliquey, the girls were a bit immature and catty as to how they treated each other. and I haven't watched a lot of chinese modern day dramas but I'm going to say no haha, those are just tv shows, not like real life. didn't take math related course. and regarding age bias yes, the industry likes young and fresh so i did feel an age bias. I'm 24 and i've been told I'm pretty "old" already LOL I know a lot of people lie about their age too or just don't tell you haha very protective sorry I can't really see your whole comment when I'm replying so hopefully i answered them all!

I really appreciate it :) The industry definitely sounds as tough as I imagine it to be, and it sounds like a lot of it is working hard alone to find an agent or company that see's value in you. I guess the same goes for any entertainment industry around the world, but I had an impression that it was a bit easier in China since their three major performance schools are so famous, so I figured maybe agents and ent. companies would actively scout from those schools. Whereas there isn't really a performance academy here in the States that I can think of off the top of my head that consistently produces famous actors/actresses/directors. Also, I know you don't really need to hear it from me but as a female of the same age as you, we're still so young! And you have such a bright youthful energy to you that some of these 18 year olds don't even have so hopefully those age comments don't get to you! (And for an industry that loves young and fresh, it's a bit strange that they always cast women in their late 20s or early 30s like Yang Mi, Yang Zi, Zhao Li Ying or Chen Qiao En to play teenage girls...)

for local chinese applicants you have to take some exams and just whatever high school examinations in your home country as you need the high school diploma when applying. best to contact the school directly and ask and regulations change often and I auditioned 7 years ago :)

What kind of dance is done in audition it has to be professional like ballroom or ballet or we can do hip hop kind of things like kpop

you have to dance solo but in my audition people did ballet, chinese traditional dance, wushu skills, jazz, contemporary and one guy did hip hop dance, but be prepared to have at least 2 different dances just incase (they asked for a different dance in round 2 of my audition)

Shanghai Theatre Academy actually is the university that i dream of, but because some of the reason， i went to UK. This is my greatest regret.

the18Ting tuition is about three times the price of a local student. At the time I was there locals were 8k and mine was 30k, I think fees are now 38-40k

haha oh no it must be less strong now😂 i worked as a radio DJ and events/TV presenter during and after graduating. And still auditioning for acting! Slow year this year due to covid but fingers crossed for next year! :)

i took singing and acting lessons during high school but i took a couple lessons for 台词 before that and my teacher also found the poem for me to recite as well. I also had a local dance teacher that created two dance routines for me to perform during the auditions. But i only met with them each maybe 2-3 times, so no longterm classes specifically for STA

there were people who were 16 in my class but i think you have to have a high school diploma/certificate, so whatever the minimum age of achieving that is!

i'm about 1.62m and was always one of the shortest in the class, but a lot of the people auditioning were tallish anyway cos they came from dance schools
