Hi everyone!! I recently shared my college acceptances with my friends and family and started receiving a lot of questions about how I got into those schools (I was accepted to Harvard, Cornell, West Point, University of Michigan, Naval Academy, Northeastern, Penn State, UConn, and Spelman). I wanted to share some tips and steps that I took to improve my application. I’ve never worked in an admissions office, so I am by no means an EXPERT in the subject, but these things seemed to work for me. Like I said in the video, I briefly went over my resume so let me know if you want me to share mine in more depth or even explain how to create one. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment down below and I’d be happy to answer.

Lillia T I agree. Most videos the person has straight A’s in AP and IB classes so it was good to see someone with H/AP classes get in to an Ivy without straight A’s. I think it’s a boost for kids to see that don’t have perfect grades and test scores.

I'm going to be a sophomore this year, and I can totally say that this took off a wee bit of stress when it comes to applying for colleges!! Grades are something that really matter to me, like anything below an A- makes me upset. The fact that your grades weren't "perfect" really inspires me to try hard but not enough to where it's unnecessary, y'know? THANK YOU!!!

Harvard is my DREAM school. I stress ab my grades so much (even though I’m only a sophomore) and I get really upset if I get anything other than an A. My school offers honors all 4 years, but AP only jr/sr, and they are weighted the same. Seeing the fact that you got something other than A, and got into Harvard gives me so much motivation you don’t even understand. Truly, thank you so much!

teshamano Im so happy i was able to do this for you! Remember the words “holistic review” because they truly do consider your entire application so if you really shine in one area it’s unlikely that they’d throw your entire application away because of one imperfect grade.

It is normal to stress about grades in high school. Personally, I find that they've been governing my existence since primary school. So you're fine 😅

jasmine adams ahhh I know. I’m from socal and everyone was relieved to hear the UC system is going test optional. and I’ve been watching online webinars for colleges I’m considering applying to to see how they will address it. the unknown of it all is scary. I just finished your essays video...it’s amazing seeing someone achieve sm success w colleges and not be the stereotypical 1600 SAT, president of 40 clubs, etc. you’re definitely a new inspiration for me!

jasmine exactly! i’m living proof that the college application process really is holistic, and they don’t merely see you as a number. I had TWO interview rounds (most people usually have just the one) and the conversation I had with admissions flowed like water. So do not be discouraged if you don’t see yourself as the stereotypical Harvard student because there’s a possibility that something else will make you stand out and impress the admissions office.

Hey, I am currently a sophomore from india. In 9th grade I got 99, 87, 87, 81, 79 and 69 in all my 6 subjects. So my average in 9th is about 84 percent - my grades have improved and I am getting 95 plus in all my classes- so do I have a chance at harvard if I get a good sat score and essays as well?

Please answer me I have a 4.23 GPA I took honors called since sophomore year, my school offers only 1 AP class so I took Distance learning 2 AP classes from another school making it 3. so I was basically going to two schools I also did college credit plus. This is not my area of expertise at all considering I’ve never been an international student and I am very unfamiliar with the college application process for international students. I wish I had an answer for you. My best guess would be to just put in your grades as is (do not convert yourself) and the college would convert it, but again, I’m really not qualified to answer this question

Ella Seo If you are interested in taking any of the 4 APs, I would definitely take them (it would look really good if you took all of the AP courses that your school offered because it shows you are taking advantage of the little advanced programs your school has to offer). College admissions officers look into how many APs are offered at your school so they will understand your circumstance. If you really don’t like one of the APs offered, then don’t take it. There’s no sense in forcing yourself to take a class you’re not interested in at such a high level (my experience with AP Physics def taught me that). I hope you take all these things into consideration when deciding how many APs you want to take at your school and I’m glad my video was able to help you!

I came to the United states like 3 years ago and English was not one of my strengths and I was confused about everything I had no idea what etxra cirruculars were it wasn't a thing where I was from and I had my parents working 24/7 leaving me in charge of my sister. Now I get things a little however about extracirruclars I barely did anyhting frehsmen year and Coronavirus also ruined things for me so do you think starting clubs and programs in sophomore year will cost me. Will colleges wonder why I didnt really do anything freshmen year will it affect my chances

Katy Russel absolutely not. i only did one club freshman year because was i playing sports year round. i don’t think that starting clubs sophomore year will be a huge deal at all. if you feel like you’d like to explain this hiccup in your application, there is a space for you to do so.

Nancy Ooi a competitive application usually has 4 years of a science, however if you know you don’t want to be a STEM major and there’s no reason for you to take another year of science just be ready to explain your reasoning in case it ever comes up in an interview

I would advise you to just participate in competitions and ECs that genuinely pique your interest. Colleges see how many APs your school offers, so they’ll keep that in mind.

esha n i know a lot of prestigious colleges look for students who have 3-4 years experience with a foreign language so I would just say if it comes up in an interview, you should be able to explain why you stopped at 2 years, however I really don’t know how big of a deal it is to admissions.

Ikem Ikekpeazu i believe this university truly gives a holistic review of all of its applicants, while being black is indeed a part of my profile, it is certainly not my entire being and i am certain that the admissions board recognized that when making their decision. To put it simply: being a minority alone was not enough to qualify me, I had to prove myself both inside and outside of the classroom just as my white counterparts.
