I would love to see your take on the best way to take the best notes from an oral lecture during a college class as well on how to take notes from reading a textbook! Lovely video!
Can you talk about building a strong resume for a top medical school besides the grades and MCAT? Like extracurriculars, research, etc. Thanks for the super helpful videos!!
In my opinion, you really have to see how the professor gives his/her exam, and develop studying methods (i.e. flashcards, outlines, visual diagrams, etc.) to how you can retain the information. This video is only good for rote memorization classes (i.e. biology, literature, psychology, biochemistry, organic chemistry), and not for math application solving classes (i.e. chemistry, physics, dynamics, statics) were you actually have to learn the processes and application to different scenarios. The video does give some good tips for class preparation and the range of possible topics discussed for a class, but fails in actually elucidating learning and retention techniques. The video title is clickbait arrogance for sure, on how he got straight As his "entire life". There's always that one course, class, or subject that a person just can't perform as well as the others, or there are other uncontrollable circumstances that a person can't control (i.e. family disorder, financial stress, lack of full academic resources, etc.), where one has to settle for a "catastrophic" B+ grade.
if you aren't studying to actually understand all of the information then you aren't guaranteed an A. if you can happily say to yourself "I understand all of this material" then you will do well no matter what.
Just Someone he got into Berkeley for undergrad and Yale for med school, he definitely got straight A’s in high school and Berkeley lol. He even made a video about how his 4.0 at Berkeley apparently hurt him. Sure he may have had trouble with a class in like 4th grade but I’m pretty sure he’s not counting that kinda shit lmao
I've done all of this and I've still ended up with a couple A-'s in college. I had a 92 in a class and I was so annoyed by it because it was from my irrelevant minor. Just one more point and I would have had an A 😅 I think you become a stronger student after being diligent for a while! Thanks for the vid!!
Seriously, the first thing I've leant when I went to University was to ask older students about the various professors. Avoiding unfair and extremly hard classes is the best tip in the universe. At least if you don't HAVE to take that class.
A great video would be: Giving tips on how to get into university, what to include into your statement and other tips for students leaving high school, moving onto university - I think that this would be an extremely useful video!
I’ve been quite nervous to begin college but this video actually eased my internal tension and I feel more confident and exuberant for my upcoming semester ! Thank you for sharing your experiences !
You and puneet with these natural eyelashes 😍 also this is something I never came across but it's so true, the retaking notes and syllabus being important!
these were some great tips! thank you!!! entering junior year hoping to pursue PA or MD still debating between the two, I'll know by the spring which will be best for me!
Im not in med school.. but finishing up grad school and entertaining my post professional doctorate..i wish i found you sooner..love your Channel!! Congratulations on your own success and i look forward to watching you and your channel grow/develop! Blessings Nikkk Xoxoxo's Ps: i did manage all As and 1C but trying to finish my last semester with all As so this is insightful!!
Loved this video! Hmm maybe you should do a challenge video. I feel like everyone thinks that pre-med majors always have their heads in books. Plus will get to find out a bit more about you. Thanks for the wonderful tips and your time in the video!!
AWESOME VIDS!!! KEEP IT UP (4TH YEAR UNIVERSITY STUDENT AND I KNOW THESE TIPS WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY HELPFUL ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU START COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY)
How do you have time to rewrite your notes? Because when you get home, you already have tons of homework and other responsibilities so how do you rewrite notes on top of that? (Maybe this is harder in HS where you have class the next day so hw has to be done and is it easier in college cause classes and schedule are more spread out? idk just a thought. Not true for everyone of course.)
R Ree unlike hs, in college you spend more time (at least you should be) studying than doing hw. Making the time to rewrite notes requires good time management skills that it takes people time to develop. Try to master that skill in hs. Also, it requires you to prioritize. If you really want that A, maybe you shouldn't go play basketball for two hours everyday or watch Netflix until midnight. Also, rewriting notes doesn't take that long if you do it daily for two reasons. One: you should only be taking a reasonable amount of notes. Two: you get faster at rewriting as time goes by.
Thank you for the question. Its definitely easier in college because lectures are more spread out for sure! But it was totally doable in high school for me because my high school class lectures were much shorter and less dense than college lectures. So while there might be more classes in high school, the rewriting notes should be much faster for each class. Also to save time on a tight schedule you can skip this for easy classes. Hope that helps!
Attractive and smart I see! ;) In the beginning, you put a lot of emphasis on asking the professor what was going to be on the exam. Do you end up looking bad in the prof's eyes if you're constantly asking about that? Do they think your priorities are not in order because apparently "all you care about is the exam" and not actually learning the course material?
Yeah that's a good question! Some people directly ask the professor if a concept will be on the exam and that definitely will sometimes annoy them. They usually aren't annoyed if you ask about what resources are relevant for the exam!
Been waiting for this thank you!! Can you make a video on what to do to get into a top college? One quick question. How do you know if your writing down the right information? Like the information you thought was important wasn't on the test and the things you thought weren't, were.
Will make a video on how to take notes in lecture that goes hand in hand with this video very soon! How to get into a top college and how to get into top med school can be videos if people are interested!
i'm loving ur videos!! please do a video about high schoolers wanting to be in pre med & and the path!! also what extra curricular things u did in pre med eg shadowing a doc etc!! thank u
Is there anything your parents did that you think made you and your sister both so academically inclined? I have two sons and if there's something I can do as a parent to lead them down whatever path made you two the way you are, I'd obviously love to know.
Hi there! If you want the honest truth my parents weren't really pushy about education at all! I didn't have a "preppy" childhood in the slightest! If you teach your children to be genuinely nice people, the rest naturally follows suit!
So I'm not sure if this is how their parents were, but I think the best thing you could do is just be supportive and put their education first. For example, I'm in college and the other day I got this great job offer and the only problem with it was that it was a big time commitment. Then, my parents told me that if this part-time job was going to affect my school work or put any extra stress on me AT ALL, then don't take it. They said they would provide me with more than enough money to spend and tutors if I ever needed help as long as I tried my best in school. I've seen from Puneet's channel that her parents are also very supportive financially too. She said that even with her job and youtube, she wouldn't make enough; thus, without her parents' support, her life would be much harder.
I got an B+ in a class because it required group work the whole semester and my group mates didn’t do anything and sabotaged the presentation. Professor gave contradicting feedback and TA gave me a really poor grade on a research paper because I wanted to do an argumentative style paper and used first person a couple times... getting a 100% on the final wasn’t gonna save my grade. Sooo fing upsetting when you do your best and it is still not within your control to reach your goal. And this class was recommended!! Soooooo pissed and upset beyond belief!!!!
Yeah that is a pretty frustrating situation. I'm sorry that the class wasn't structured well and the grading was unfair; some classes need to get their **** together lol.
You just have to do things that you like and show some level of accomplishment in them (national, international... and it's great if you do more than just school.... also you should get involved with your community in some way. Also prioritize getting good grades and scores. Unless you're applying to a direct med, you don't necessarily apply for science or "premed".
Video about the path to get into top university definitely coming! Maybe I will first make a video about pre-med path to get to a good med school but it really depends on what everyone wants. Keep the feedback coming!
What was your GPA and may scores? What extra curriculars did you do? What were the pre requirement for your program? What type of doc do you want to be? What was your favorite and least favorite rotation?
Thanks for video really helped me. Could you do a video about what you do the day before or the day of before a huge test MCAT, SAT etc. Do you study, relax, etc. Thanks again!
Video on how to efficiently take lecture notes, please and thank you. I can never keep up with what the professor is saying. I find that when I try to take notes, my focus shifts from trying to understand the material being presented to furiously writing down everything the lecturer is saying. Do you use a laptop or handwritten notes? I noticed that some students have tape recorders. What are your thoughts on that? Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. Much appreciated!
My BSN nursing program never had a syllabus that was this helpful. Nobody knew whether to focus on lecture, books, etc. If we ask professors they think were trying to cheat or something if we ask what to study and they just say study everything. Seriously? It's like some universities want to screw you over.
G H Sorry to hear about your idiotic professors. Man some teachers can be quite unreasonable, vague and unhelpful instead of guiding students properly.
How did you go about rewriting your notes? Did you buy a separate notebook, did you use the same notebook, or did you just skip lines on the note page?
I usually make flash cards as they help with retention. If I were to rewrite my notes on top of that, I worry it may be time consuming. So is rewriting notes really necessary if we already do things like flash cards?
Nice tips and very organized...unfortunately this doesn't apply to engineering. I almost never rewrite my notes because that will never help me in my labs, assignments, midterm, and exam. There's
Great video! Just curious, my first exam is usually a bust because I don't know what to expect. Is there any way to avoid that other than haggling the professor about it?
+vency p Yeah the first exam is always a pain. Definitely look for hints when the prof talks about the exam, you can ask people who took the class in previous years for advice, check the syllabus for hints, ask friends around you what they have heard about the exam, study mock exams or quizzes as a hint of what to expect, and trust your intuition in thinking what the exam is like. Also never be discouraged by your first exam; that's one of the most common ways to not get the final grade you want! My first exam is more often than not one of my lowest scoring exams!
1.how do i know if something will not be on an exam? 2. For the part where you said to rewrite notes, can I just go over the notes mentally instead of rewriting and still have the same effective experience with this method. ***keep in mind that he gives us handouts and I write small notes and underline/circle stuff***
Hey, I noticed on your syllabus it says above 90% is an A. Is that the case for all your courses as in your curriculum? I'm from Canada and an A is either 80% above or 85% above here!
Yeah in the US 90s are As and 80s are Bs. I believe the Canadian system also reports grades as numbers/averages but in the US they are displayed as letters
You have great videos!! Can you do a video about how to study for a online class! I have online lecture but a lab at the school, and the lecture isn't that great bc I am teaching myself. :/
Often I find myself valuing actually learning over 'getting the grade' this does lead to high scores, naturally, but I don't always get all A's. Sometimes I get an A- or (very rarely) a B+. How do you balance the two? I don't want to feel like I'm pandering to a system
Can u talk about comparing grades? I feel I compare myself to others and it makes me feel dumb when I do a lot worse than other people on certain exams. Any advice? I don’t want grades to be my focus but they inadvertently are ...
What if you do poorly or even Fail the first exam and then you see that content came from "recommended" resource, doesn't that make you lose having an A because this test brought you down so much?
R Ree many professors allow you to drop your lowest exam score or they make it a smaller percentage of your overall grade. If you failed an exam and your professor doesn't allow that, sucks Haha
Great question! I would say 99% of the time that doesn't really happen if it is truly listed as optional/recommended but not required. In my experience the worst that has really happened is that like 3 questions out of 50 on the exam could only be found in the textbook even though the textbook was optional. It's only really an issue with those tricky professors or ones who are so far removed that they don't realize what's on their own test.
