Every January we play Survivor Pantry Island at our house, which means we eat everything in the house and do not grocery shop. it cleans the pantries out for spring cleaning, saves us money after the holidays and since we bought all the food to begin with we have never eaten anything weird. If I have a lot of flour we make pasta, bread etc. The only exception is medical and personal care items. If we get a cold, we buy the cold meds...etc. been doing this for 7 years and its so fun to come up with some meal in order to use up stuff.

That is a brilliant idea and in January after holidays, PERFECT! I did the clear out early this summer, 2018 and gave all my boxed foods to my roommates as I started the KETO WAY OF LIFE, and wanted to get those foods out of my sight so I did not eat them out of dire cravings...I will however pass this on to my family and friends!

I was cooking and I heard my husband turning this video on the Apple tv in the living room! Haha! Then he kept asking me, "why aren't you doing this, babe?" "you should do this!" "hey - are you doing this?!" while he watched the video. Looks like I got husband on board....

i started following your channel a year ago and have been meal planning ever since, going from spending OVER $200 to UNDER $200 every 2 weeks for a family of now 6 (kids are 5, 4,2, and 5months)... aftet i watched this vidoe i tried your tip on writing down my "Haves" & "Needs", & this trip we only spent $115 for these next 2 weeks!

Lydia, as your kids grow, look into the "fillers" for your meals. For example, when you make spaghetti add chopped veggies, lentils, etc. to make the meal go further. Also, when making burgers, add cooked rice, corn, beans, into your meat to make them go further. Hope this helps, I know you'll discover many ideas.

Adding veggies is good, dont add grains or beans to meat. You will add pounds to your figure. Eggs are good, cheap protein. Make your own yogurt and let it go 24hrs. It will be very lowcarb too, with all protein. You can even make cheese so its cheap too. Its rly not hard. Dont fill someone. Feed them.

Lydia Hubbard oh wow. I wish I could do that. We are a family of 3.5 lol. A 16 year old and a 2 year old and if I was VERY frugal , caught some good sales and made meals that were inexpensive or that maybe would be eaten 2- 3 times I could get away with about 250.00 a week and everyone being fed....maybe I feel like it takes about 300.00 every 2 weeks just to get by and stretch it out. And that's with buying some bulk type things and buying things that lasts weeks or months I tend to stock up on most things. I don't just buy for one time or small amounts (for the most part) and I like to keep certain things on hand that we don't ever run out of or things we need in a pinch....those skill are coming in REAL handy right now I'm sure. Since going to the store takes more thought now than ever and lots are avoiding it all together and some ppl have lots Jon's and went weeks maybe without an income or half the income

That’s fantastic! Jordan’s Budget Bootcamp is amazing if you want to delve deeper. I can also highly recommend Grocery Budget Bootcamp by the blog, ‘Don’t Waste the Crumbs.’ Her meal planning method alone is worth it, and similar to Jordan’s. The course is just more in depth as it’s specific to groceries.

You can wash and reuse Ziploc bags with just a little bit of dishsoap and hot water... saves loads of money and plastic!!!! :)
@MsSusieStone
@MsSusieStone 4 года назад
Anneke Matheson I use reusable ziploc bags made out of silicone. They also withstand rough handling better and do not tear in the freezer when pushed aside because they are way thicker. Got a pack of 10 for under $10 on Amazon and they already last for about a year. After washing I put a straw in to hold them open so they dry completely and don‘t get moldy and gross 👍🏻 you can even get some that are dishwasher safe 😊

This breakdown actually really helped me because when I've heard you talk about $100 per person per month I knew there was no way I could do that with my family of five and thought there was something wrong with me! It seemed impossible! Now that I know the cost of our groceries are at least doubled and most seem to be tripled here in Nova Scotia, Canada, I can adjust my budget accordingly based on our region. It is impossible to find a jug of milk less than $5.75 just as an example. The breakdown was perfect. Thank you!!!

I'm barely into the first minute or so of your video and I'm already clapping: "NO COUPONS!" Thank goodness you aren't telling me I need to use coupons. I tried that years ago--developed a fancy system with a big binder and spent HOURS clipping and sorting and then HOURS at the grocery pulling the exact products and then more time as I let other customers go ahead of me in line because I had a zillion coupons at checkout. I ended up with a bunch of food that wasn't healthy and often surpassed its shelf life because I bought too much just to fulfill the coupons. Quitting that task was liberating. It may work for some people, but it didn't for me.

This was so simple. I love what you said about not finding recipes on Pinterest and then buying everything to make it. That is what I have been doing! Now I really look at what is on sale and figure out what I am going to make based on that. I get fresh eggs from a friend who keeps chickens. We barter, but many people sell their extras. And I never put my eggs in the fridge. My dad was in poultry all his life. My butter only goes in the fridge till I open it and then it stays on my counter. Cheese is fine to be left out also. Chill out, she has not jeopardized her family at all.

What i have come to realize about the savings catcher app. If you wait till the 6th day of your purchase( you must scan receipt within 7 days) you will get alot more money back. ( Iam talking dollars verses change) doing it on the same day you actually get less money . Happened a couple of times by accident until I realized it does make a difference WHEN AND WHAT DATE you scan your receipt.!! So now I just set a reminder on my phone when to san receipt. Hate that my Wal-Mart won't price match anymore!

I learned that blocks of cheese (string cheese, too) can freeze perfectly fine AS LONG AS you let it thaw to room temperature on your counter. It has always worked for me. But it has to get really close to room temperature, so that it re-coagulates (that sounds disgusting, I know!). We eat all of our cheese from the freezer cuz I only buy it on sale.

Deen Denno Yes. That’s my problem too. Sometimes I feel like something takeout is cheaper for one, than preparing a whole meal. Time saving tip for ground meat: put it in a ziploc bag, close (but leave an inch open) and take a rolling pin. Flatten the whole thing, close the bag completely and put it in the freezer. The ground meat will thaw way faster than just poppin‘ in the whole package because it‘s not that thick 😊 saves me so much time when I need some ground meat quickly 👍🏻 and it stores way better because you can stack the packages or even store the upright when they‘re frozen rock solid. and who doesn‘t need more freezer space, right? 😎

17:50 hating price matching because of time and stress - it's just a matter of getting used to. I could go up to 3 to 4 times a week grocery shopping. It's soooo time consuming! If now once a week is all you can shop than you save the time, and use that time for planning, strategizing and price matching! Thank you so much for your wonderful videos♡ Thanks Jordan.

@SwahiliSpicE 7 лет назад
Yes here in the U.K. It's the same thing. Price match is only on branded items, not supermarket own brands items. And it has to be exactly the same product, size, everything has to be identical. And I also find that you guys have so many coupons and things to help you save tons. I have a lot of coupons in an envelope but they are all on expensive branded products that even with the money off, it's still more expensive than other brands so my collection just builds but I know I'll never use them. They're very rarely worth it. It isn't easy out here!

Do they do coupons in Canada? Are you checking out clearance racks? Do you go to more than 1 supermarket? Or stick with 1 place?

EmeryShae everything is more expensive in Canada. When I was a little girl I noticed on the back of books that the price in Canada was always more than in America. Do you use different currency there?

April Rose in Canada we do have a different currency it's the Canadian dollar which is worth less than American dollars even thought they are both called dollars. Confusing right ?!

True for us. apples here are easily $2.20 + Lb here in the Yukon yikes! her layout of 100/person/month would be really really hard for us. my weekly bill is usally $250 for fam of 4. prices have gone up and $275 is the new norm...wages are yet to rise.

I love these kinds of videos showing how to save money on groceries! Thank you for posting! One question- how do you feel about the quality of cheaper foods, like the eggs that aren't free range, etc.? Just curious. Thank you. 😀

amy skelton I’ve eaten free range eggs as well as the regular eggs at the grocery store and beside the color of the yolk being much brighter with the free range eggs, the taste is the same.

I'm from the UK & we do an online shop at ASDA every Sunday! I write my list of what I have, base my meals around this, write my list on what I need, search for each item on the app and sort from cheapest first! Spent £25.00 on ingredients for homemade meals which will feed us for dinner and lunch for 10 days :) I'm the person that would usually spend £90 a week for the two if us if I go into the store!! xx

Use the Wal-Mart grocery app add your meals you plan in the app it adds it up as you go and if one meal has a ton of expensive ingredients take that meal out and add a cheaper meal/recipe. When u get done u can place your order to be picked up or just go to the store and pick up what's on the list

I completely agree with you about going no more than once a week if you can. When I need to drop in for "a few things" I always spend more. And I've noticed the savings catcher not catching all the deals either so I went back to doing it myself :)

Here's my complaint about the Walmart Savings Catcher Ap. I live in a small town with one Walmart and two independent grocery stores. Savings Catcher won't match those stores in the same town, but does a radius of X miles. It will report that it's comparing prices to 6 stores. 5 of the 6 will all be Dollar General stores. I almost never get money back, not because Walmart is the cheapest, but because it's comparing to stores with limited inventory, no meat and produce, limited national brands, etc

Alexis Klaebe that's about the same ? With the exchange rate like 5.50 is American dollars which is about average here for "cheap items or on sale. 2 bucks for bread and 1-2 for milk depending on when and where u buy it. You can pay 93 cents for a gallon today and almost 4 tomorrow...

I am obsessed with Winco! I love their prices and their quality, and the fact that it's employee-owned. I have had so much trouble price-matching at Walmart due to their restrictions on how they will do it. I also don't appreciate Walmart's business practices, nor how they treat their employees. I have noticed (back when I used to price match) that when a certain produce item is on sale in another store's ad, Walmart won't even stock it that week, so they won't be able to match it. I save more money with the low prices at Winco and the sales at Fry's and Sprouts. Still, the shopping less often tip is a good idea. I know that whenever I go to the store for "the one thing I'm missing for dinner that night," I walk out with extra items. They're not impulse buys, but things that I do actually need, or that went on super-sale so they're good to stock up on, but still, it's rare that I only buy the one thing that I went in for.
