How I improved my tracking accuracy by ~10 percent (not clickbait and not what you think)

Tracking accuracy hasn't been my strong point in games, mainly because I've played Quake for most of that time and I'm terrible with recoil when I do play a different game. Plus I get distracted by flashing lights so in a game like Apex, I literally cannot see where I'm meant to be aiming, but if they removed those things, I'm sure I could track well there too! But this video is mostly about Quake because that's my main and is the most aim pure (no recoil, where you shoot is where you hit, zero screen shake, very little visual clutter).
But as some of you have noticed, my tracking accuracy has improved by about 10 percent (on average I used to see maybe 27 to 32%, now I'm seeing an average more like 36 to 44%, sometimes even around 50%), so this video is just talking about what caused that change.

Funny, I noticed something similar with myself and sound. There'd be times where I'd go and casually play something like Warzone without any sound and although I was at a huge disadvantage not being able to hear footsteps, my tracking and reaction time was quicker. Always wished modern games would allow for the customization levels of Quake and Source games to reduce as much clutter as possible and just leave room for pure aim mechanics.

Something of note, a lot of people are saying Battlebit Remastered is less frustrating to play because of the simple graphics. Something else I suggest: find a friend who you're comfortable with, and do debate drills, where you debate a topic while 1v1ing. The idea is to make your aim more muscle memory and less something you think about. This will really help in games like Overwatch, where you don't want to be thinking about your aim. You need to be thinking about the game. Strategy, cooldown tracking, ult tracking, positioning... there is so much to think about in that game. Don't be committing mindspace to your aim. That's death in games like Overwatch.

@@CorrosiveCitrusyeah, I'm doing my best to avoid crossplay unless I'm playing with my casual irl friend. The only crossplay game I somewhat enjoy is The Finals. It feels more balanced than any other crossplay game I've played and controller players had their panties in a bunch when they slightly nerfed AA which is based by Embark. Probably lost players because of it. No joke, with snipers close range when they scoped in, the AA went straight to their head. Hopefully Quake never goes crossplay. It would be a complete sellout of the brand and would lose OG players. I used to play a lot of Apex but that game has a real AA problem. The meta for pro teams is two controller players and one MnK player that is basically used for long distance picks and not having controller brain where they just rush everything. Usually the in game leader of the team. In the end, I think the meta leans towards controller because at the end when it really matters in BR where almost all teams play conservative, the final ring ends up being close range encounters.

Great video Zy. I used to practice DM in Valorant with music on and global sounds turned off and found that my aim and tapping/bursting performance improved a lot because I was forcing by brain to learn timings off of visual cues instead of relying on the audio (also not getting any free kills from prefiring based on footstep sounds). I’m an Immortal 3 player in Valorant now.

Thank you for this. It's like you've read my mind and made the perfect video to summarize all my recent feelings toward myself as a gamer. Specifically with my tracking feeling less-than-stellar given all my years as an FPS player. Removing hitsounds and dmg numbers is something I've used in other games before! Definitely heard that tip passed around prior when I was playing Apex and remember being advised to keep the shield hit feedback icons off for the same reason.

This is somwthing I love about quake. My aim, especially my tracking, is pretty good for the level I am playing at, but I struggle massively with movement. There are so many parts to playing well in this type of game and so many strengths and weaknesses that every player is unique in what his capabilities are. I can get high accuracy with the lg, but seeing Zy's movement and especially those jumps makes me envious as hell xd

Are you using low sensitivity? To do these rocket jumps, I recommend being able to do a 180 turn with a comfortable flick of your hand. Then it's just a matter of practice so the angles and distances feel "normal" to you. Like I never really think about these jumps, I just have a feel for them.

ou should really study aimer 7's aiming guide. His " Heuristic about Geometric positioning" pdf and his "Strafe Aiming 101-1" pdf's.. All free downloadable, and do his " KovaaKs aim workout routines" pdf.. When I still had time and did it, My aim improved to levels that I could not comprehend. .I did things in Apex that just came Naturally that was really unnatural for me and believe me I am a bad fps player.. These are things that can be trained with specific 1and half to 2 hour aim training sessions. .After a month you will be a new aimer.. I just don't have time because of life anymore .Don't fall for all the voltaic and whatever saturated aiming stuff out there. You can do that and go deeper into the aiming rabbit hole as you progress further .Just strictly follow Aimer 7's guide and let me know after 1 month the drastic improvement that you made.. Talent is only a small percentage of being super great.. The rest can be mechanically trained and for that we have Aimer 7's guide. So do this Rocket jump Ninja and never look back.. Hey Zy, been watching your vids from the very beginning. I also am a mouse enthusiast and have tried most of them. Our opinions generally align. Though one more thing I have to mention is I am 100% sure that if you rebind fire from LMB to a keyboard key (i.g. space) then you are not applying pressure in a single point on a mouse and it makes it that much easier to track. Though I have a fainr memory that your fire key is already re-bound to a keeb key???

Great insight turning off the sound. That also kind of helps in aim trainers too with tracking scenarios. It's something you can experiment with. If you like the no sound great, if not, no big deal. I really wish more fps would add sound customizations like this in their game. However, I think that might be too much to ask for seeing as how so few fps can get footsteps correct.

I love the customization you get out of those classic games, I set the Railgun width at a minimun value instead of the large blob one it makes a HUGE difference. I've never considered turning of the hit sounds for lightning but that's because I assumed tracking was not going to be my thing (the hardware cables, weight etc.. were poor those days). The peripheral options nowadays are fantastic but that's comes in a ear where games are soo badly designed and graphically harmful.

if you want to disable lg sounds, in settings -> weapons set default (or all others weapons individually) to cg_hitbeep [current value] and then set lg to cg_hitbeep 0. if you want to disable floating damage numbers only on lg type this command (and to re-enable just add back lg) cg_damagePlum "g mg sg gl rl rg pg bfg gh cg ng pl hmg"

Thanks brotha. Definitely trying to break top 100 on Kovaacs tracking for a while now, I've made some huge leaps and eventually went top 200 on various tracking scenarios but have hit a peak. My question to you is; I know I am improving when I feel the arm/muscles being strained after warm-ups and intense aim training and am hitting higher scores - in your experience, what are some other positive feedback signals you've seen during your own aim training?
@CedricPotato
@CedricPotato 7 месяцев назад
hey, I have 1.5k hours in kovaaks. You can check out my yt if u want. Your arm feeling strained after warm-ups, or any practice at all is not a good sign. That means you are tensing up your arm/wrist/fingers. That's bad for many reasons, the obvious one being health and longevity, but probably more interesting for you is performance. Tension does not equal better aim, in fact its the opposite. There's a concept called "tension managment" you can dive into. But basically you don't want to tense at all most the time and reserve tension only for very specific aspect of aiming. This is a crucial skill that every great aim trainer player is good at. A positive feedback signal that you're improving is simply that you're statistically (scores) improving over time, and that you're recognising and breaking your bad habits. Good luck and happy improvement!

great video. I prefer tracking shooters over low ttk twitch shooters. one of the reasons I put a stupid amount of hours in apex. so satisfying to one clip a player using mouse and keyboard. not so much when using a controller. I grew up on Unreal Tournament and Quake Arena btw. Maybe that has something to do with it. First FPS game I ever beat as a teen was Quake 2. Got it from a bargain bin from walmart for like $5 and the game is still one of my favorites to this day. UT and Quake Arena was the first time I ever got into multiplayer. I admittedly preferred UT though. Man, I miss those days when those were the most popular shooters on PC. Now other than CS, BRs are the most popular MP shooters... when I load up Quake Champions, I face the same diehard players over and over

I was playing a game with a lot of tracking and one day I was playing a quick match, but didn't put my headset on. It was like an AHA moment at the age of 36 after so many years of FPS games. Loud noise, numbers and other distracting elements have a huge impact on my performance and after I figured it out, I tried with games like Counter-strike, and loud guns like the AK were harder to spray control because of the noise. I was also diagnosed with ADHD, and apparently auditory overload is a big part of it for me. Knowing this, I managed to find a way to cope

I play competitive CSGO and I noticed i play better when relaxing and don't think about my rank. It's probably obvious, but just relaxing can make a big difference. Being angry will make you do stupid risky plays (which can be beneficial if your team is stuck few round long loosing streak). Experiencex players sometimes don't expect dumb strats, because that goes against how the game should be played. My 2 cents.
@WARnTEA

The thing that I found most impactful for becoming a good player (Immortal 3 in Valorant) is learning where to find “free” kills. Either by trading off of your team mate, or looking at the minimap to spray through a smoke, or certain angles are disadvantageous to the enemy, but people enjoy peeking them anyway. Also, another easy way to get free kills is to peek the same angle over and over again at like 4 second intervals, because there are certain places on the map where if they want to take space they have to keep moving up and clear a close angle. Your chances of finding a free kill go up dramatically if there is a good chance that they might be in the middle of clearing a close angle. Finding free kills is so important because it gets your brain in the zone and focused. It also takes all of the pressure off of playing the game. You can take more risks in both directions if you don’t have to worry about getting your quota of kills. By both directions I am talking about aggressive and passive risks. The obvious one is aggressive risks and the aggressive risk might be easier to win off of since your decision making will likely be faster than if your are desperate to find kills, or are angry. However you can also take passive risks, where instead of hunting for kills you just chill out and let the game come to you, taking what you are given and not forcing anything/doing predictable things like instantly rotating after seeing no contact at the start of the round.

I'm 36 and I have noticed as graphics quality increases its harder for me to track enemies. In games like COD\Warzone there are times I can't see someone standing right in front of me. while playing quake 1 I have my HUD and view model off because I realized that I can focus better without the on screen distraction. I have carried that over to racing SIMs and noticed I do better without the map, time, etc on screen as I am able to focus on just racing. I think some people are more sensitive to sensory overload and I'm pretty sure I fall into that category. I generally play worse on games that have a lot of visual and audio input queues. I don't think its age related either since I started noticing this in my teens while playing competitive counter strike and quake.

I'm 37 with really bad eyesight. Something I've been plagued with my whole life. I didn't wear glasses throughout school because I didn't want to be a "nerd" which hindered my grades a bit although I still did pretty good but could never see the board so I basically didn't use what the teacher taught and learned straight from the textbooks😂This is going to sound funny but I loved the Simpsons when I was a kid but the way Milhouse was treated had an impact. lol. Now people wear glasses in fashion while in the 90s, you were just a nerd then. In reality, I was always a nerd but a nerd that loved playing football and basketball. lol. Anyways, after getting a a graphics card that can handle 1440p, I can see a whole lot better. Never going back to 1080p. Now I feel like I can see like the average person in game at the very least

i think a lot of people should also try making their fire button a key on their keyboard. having to press and hold a mouse click requires force from your finger and changes your mouse grip as youre trying to track. removing the need to press any buttons on your mouse hand can keep your grip completely consistent and stable. I've never actually tried this myself but i've always thought it to be an interesting idea that not many people have tried

I tried turning hit sounds off a while ago but it doesn't work for me... yeah my shaft maybe gets a tiny bit better but over the years I've learned to estimate how much health the enemy from the hit sound. Without it i have no clue how much damage I dealt. And also the hitsound helps if you have to focus on something else for a moment. In Diabotical wipeout you sometimes need to check on respawns while shafting and the hit sounds help with that.

Hey Zy. I'm an old Quake player like yourself who now mains Apex almost exclusively. I have about 6000 hours over the past 2 years or so.(I grinded pretty hardcore almost everyday) It's the hardest game I've ever played, but I won't give up (despite wanting to many times) one thing I can tell you is not to focus too much on your aim as you will never outaim the controllers (unless you're SeriousQC or hollow_o). Learn movement as much as possible, tap strafe/wall bounce/superglide everywhere constantly. That's the one advantage we have as MnK players. At least by default controllers can't tap strafe so that's something to keep in mind. That and using certain crutch legends like Wraith. Use shotguns also as peek/burst damage is the best counter to them. Play with team and never take 1s unless absolutely necessary and you have the advantage. I feel like Apex is a great game at its core and worth continuing despite major glaring issues. Some other great Quake players like cooller are also playing it. GL and be well.

Hey, yeah I'm pretty much done with Apex outside of testing scroll wheels, I just don't enjoy the "experience", despite a pretty cool game at the heart of it. And all those extra movement tricks like super glides just kind of annoy me, feels stupid. I miss being able to actually strafe left and right properly. I don't like getting slowed down when getting shot, etc. It's just not a good experience to play. I have so many better things to do. So I'm back playing Quake for the most part, which still feels great and not such a grind.

Understandable, if Quake still hits the spot and you're able to get games easily enough then nothing wrong with that. I hop into ql and q2 every so often to just chill. When you said you were tracking better without shooting, then I thought you were gonna say you unbound m1 and instead started shooting with keyboard. I just made that change recently, moved +attack from m1 to left shift to better relax my hands while trackking and only focus on aiming with the mouse.. that really helped.

in Battlefront 2015 when I play alone in public lobbies, I really feel the flow and focus on my own gameplay, but after a while I started playing competitively, in organised tournaments, with actual teammates, communication, strategies and such, and for years I couldn't figure out why I can't feel the same confident way in private matches like in pubs. Recently I've got the idea that it's partially because of the voice comm (obv I know there are many more factors too, but I feel like this can be slipped by easily) ) They distract me so much from own instincts, from the ingame sounds that I feel like my reaction time is lenghtened in gunfights, and my overall mental presence in the game is constantly disrupted because I'm trying to decode the more-often-than-not irrelevant information that my teammates are giving. I swear even if I just play private match, but without being on voice with the players, I can play much more comfortably, do my own thing, but still sort of play like a team because we just see what the others are doing, where are they positioning and we adjust accordingly during the game.

I remember when I used to grind CSGO a few years back. I was getting tired of getting pwned by smurfs so decided to really focus on how to improve on the game. Learned the callouts for each map way better and learned to not use my wrist for all of the aiming. Changed out my headphones from a Sennheiser HD598 to HD6XX was the biggest change and the sound direction accuracy was up and footstep sounds sounded more segregated from other sounds so I could tell where the enemy team was going or if they were rotating off a site. Helped me climb up to Global Elite back then. Nowadays, I'm adulting too much so not much time to play but sometimes, you just have to try different things, fail, try something else, fail again and try something else again until you get it right. So many that fail in one direction and let it get to them but that's part of learning to get good.

The changes for me that made be better at tracking was mirror strafing whenever I can and not randomly ad spamming, strafing messes up your aim if you don’t correct it in time and if you’re changing directions too fast it makes it almost impossible to stay on target Changing my sens from 43cm/360 to 28cm/360 improved my tracking at close range and it’s also easier to control your recoil because you don’t have to pull down your mouse as much

I do not think this is distracting brain - I think it is making u lazy when u hear sound, if this makes any sense. I checked this concept vs bots, as this beep off concept is interesting thing actually :) What happens to me is that when I start to hear hit beep, my brain is starting to go into some kind of lazy mode, hard to describe it. And my eyes lose focus on the target, like they go into not focused mode, a bit blurry. But I think this can be worked out with practice. When I really focus on what I am doing, I do not have thi issue, and I see no increase in aim with beeps off. ALso there are 2 big donwsides to no sound option, which I do not think are personal preference, they are rather objective for everyrone: 1. U will not know if u are still hitting the enemy if they go outside of lg range - but only few steps, far enough for you to not hit them, but not far enough for you to realise they are out of range. I think anyone experiecned with lg understands what I am talking about, this tiny little spot at the edge of range/no range, when u still track the enemy but u do not connect even when on target - and u realize this after a second or two pretty much only cause u hear no sound of the hit. 2. when opponent is very close to the wall, like when u only see a fraction of his body, and rest is wall. Or if he is standing at the ledge above u , and u only see a part of his head or maybe a bit of torso and rest is ledge. In this situation margin between hit/no hit is really tiny, and in the heat of the battle, I do think the only way to know if u are hitting the enemy and not the wall/ledge instead, is sound indication. Beeps ON, but u do not hear them - u automatically know ur off the target, and u will make this slight adjustment of crosshair placement. Without sound u will not make the adjustment needed, u will not be able to tell if ur on target or not. So I don't know, this beep off kinda works if player is in lazy mode, but there are also downsides to such setup.

Changing sitting position and your entire body ergonomics as a whole improved my aim the greatest than getting a more expensive mouse. Don't just dump money on a gaming chair. Hi, Zy, I've noticed that tracking is much easier to do when you don't press click on mouse and replace it with Space instead. The idea is to focus your right hand only on tracking. It's OK to use LMB for rocket/etc., but Lighting/Plasma - on Space button on keyboard. Strongly recommend trying it.
@RocketJumpNinja
@RocketJumpNinja 7 месяцев назад
Yeah we used to talk about the potential aim issues of having mouse buttons, even in the Kariyu pen video where he was mentioning having buttons on the pen mess with his aim... it does make sense to have a pure aiming device. It's one of those logical changes that probably won't get done though, because too many people are already adapted to the current format. I agree though, it makes sense.

This is a legitimate problem for tracking heavy tasks. LMB adds too much inconsistent downforce on the mouse which adds friction making it harder to accurately control your aim.

I always believed in your saying that if you got a smaller mouse u play better, but right now after trying over 40 mice I'm not to sure anymore. My favourite mice till now where the MM712 (MM710 back in the days), the UL2 and the old G Pro.. I always played well with them and my aim was really good, but I always lacked consistency. I had games where every flick was on and the next game I couldnt even track a slow target.. I thought about this a lot and tried so many mice to get more consistent with aiming.., but only after I tried more comfortable bigger mice I gained consistency. My aim got a little bit worse by around 5% I would say, but I can get my high highs way more often now. That's why I stopped playing with smaller mice and now main the Deathadder V3 Pro The big comfy shape really helps me aim more relaxed and more consistent with more concentration. I also have way more fun playing now, since I know I can hit the hard shots almost everytime and I dont need to concentrate on aiming that much anymore. I really would like to know your thoughts about that Zy! Since I tried everything to get better and my head almost exploded because of that :D

Interesting, I mean we always say you gotta find what's right for you, but we could look into this more ... so, what's your hand size and grip style? What mouse pad are you using? Is your arm rested on anything when aiming? There are a lot of factors, but those are a good start.

I'm at a point in my life where the allure to perform in online games is not worth the time investment required. As a teen I was constantly top scorer in nearly everything I tried. Now when I sit down to play the amount of effort to go positive is staggering and not fun in the slightest. And that's ok. I played shooters for a insanely long time and got my enjoyment out of them but all good things come to an end. I much prefer games with less demanding mechanics or to be blunt me not facing off against aim assist. Great video anyways time is a cruel mistress and the reality is improvement starts in your mind but I respectfully decline the invitation so to speak.

For those watching this and thinking "ok let's lower audio latency" I highly recommand you to not do this, I have an audio interface which mean I have a full control on my audio input lag and putting it near to 0 latency is making my mouse very laggy, and vice versa the highest delay on my audio interface is giving me the snappiest and most responsive mouse.
@attractivegd9531
@attractivegd9531 7 месяцев назад
Allow me to disagree. Improving 10% doesn't say much if it's not against the same players and on the same scenarios. Your hitbeep theory (been there, done that) is placebo because if you are hiting 100% the beep will not stop, rather than fixing the distracting hitbeep you should focus on fixing your aim.
@RocketJumpNinja
@RocketJumpNinja 7 месяцев назад
It's Quake in Australia, it is against the same players. And I've done this a heap before so it's not a new thing, it's just something I've returned to. So nope, not allowing you to disagree, you are wrong if you do. Furthermore, if you're relying on the hit beep to know if you're hitting, that delay will be enough to throw your aim to begin with, so you'll never get a "track" on them. My aim is fine, it's the waiting for the beep that was the issue.

I thought clickbait was like a bait and switch? Like they say something and then don't really show it. Or they just say something like "You won't believe how I improved my aim by 10%!" For example, I think most people are playing on picmip 5 or so, which makes all the textures blurry and the enemies stand out even more. Yeah but Australia hits way above its weight considering its population size, we have some outstanding players in this region. I mean, Python was 5th in the world back in the prime Quake days. Zenaku has recently hit top 4-6 (he's a real life friend from my city). DanDaKing is a Quake phenom that really took it to the pros (he destroys me but still, it gives me some perspective of what's out there). But the better point is ... pro soccer players look average against each other, because they're all so good. Without you actually playing these guys I'm going up against, you can't really say what my aim is like, because for all you know, all these guys are pro level and making it really difficult for me. Or maybe they're newbs and making me look good. You simply don't know. 😊 Again though, the video was about something that helped me and could help others, not how good I am.
