The sun may sustain life, but that's offset by the fact that it fades game systems and game packaging. In this shady video, I attempt to improve my methods of blocking out all the harmful rays coming from the burning ball of gas in the sky.

UV reflective/protective glass for the windows seems like the most reasonable solution for a game store. For a gaming room - depends on your TV setup vs. the windows position. Anyway, this way irrelevant of the light, you would be sure that they do not get damaged.

Another great video Kevin, I would tint the windows with 02 or even better: stick dark wrapping directly on the glass. That way you wont need to make it a flat surface. For the tape it should be stuck on the window frame if that was metal, they will peel and fall off if stuck on painted surface like the wall

Did you look into UV window film? At best it could supplement your cardboard plus filter out UV light which is the main fading culprit. To hold the card board in you can buy thin strips of wood and tack them in with very small brads (nails). You would find these in the millwork and panel molding dept of a home improvement center. For one window you are look at maybe $35? depending on how dark you want the film to be.

there used to be a local retro store that had original console boxes from all the 90s consoles--SNES, Genesis Sega CD, Saturn, etc.--right up front in the window. all were sun bleached to hell and back, to the point where a few more years probably would have rendered the front sides completely unrecognizable :(

I used poster board and tin foil. Sprayed some spray glue, applied foil to the board and then gorilla taped it to the windows. Poster boards are the exact same size as my window panes. 100% effective. Oh another benefit to my method is while it's 100% effective blocking the light I can still open and close the windows.

I see that too, literally every game store I've ever been to has tons of windows. It's like you're freeing the games from a even more severe sunburn by buying them. I tend to embrace the sunlight although I did delete a broken window with closet doors. Looks terrible but were going to build a mud room there anyways so it wont matter. One window in my living room I always leave the curtain on because it shines where my console & TV are but Vitamin D is good so I like to get sunlight into the house. If I had that many systems setup like that though I believe I would do the same.

More guaranteed to get wet if you do that directly on the window. Depends on the climate though I suppose whether the moisture would be enough to cause you to have to replace it frequently. Up here in the cascade mountains it would definitely become wavy in 3-5 years time doing that.

On a similar note , comic shops have been known to keep comics displayed in the sunlight fading covers badly . Growing up , my local comic shop had some of their valuable covers in a case near a window and they were super bleached out . I used to think "they're never going to sell those faded comics" and they probably never did . Part of the problem was that the comics were overpriced and never moved . I've also seen shops hang comics up on the walls where they'd be exposed . I also know that indirect sunlight will fade things as well . I keep my front room shades closed all the time because it gets really sunny and hot in there and even in that room I had some issues with sun damage . I always thought that the shades would block anything harmful . I've had to put dark curtains over that to try to help . I like the light , but sunlight is just too damaging .

I did something similar in a previous house, but it had casement windows which made the cardboard extremely obvious from the outside. My solution for that was to put white poster board in the window first and then the cardboard over that. I just used painter's tape to hold it all in place. From the outside, it just looked like a window with a shade drawn. Before I listed the house for sale, I just peeled the tape off and threw it all away. Also... I've heard people caution against putting dark colored backgrounds directly behind the window glass (particularly of double pane windows). The concern is that the dark color will cause the air between the panes to heat up, expand, and blow the seals out. I think cardboard is about as a dark as I'd personally risk.
