Hi John, Haha No. Hiragana and Katakana took me about two weeks total to master. I dedicated a few hours each day to practice. This is what helped me with the methods I had available at the time: Consistent practice of at least 30 minutes to an hour daily. Flashcards to memorize characters. Writing practice I wrote out each character daily. Reading practice I read simple words and sentences daily. After I mastered this phase, then I just tried to use it in daily life while living out here in Japan. I know this is a long answer, but you asked an important question.
