Let me show you how I'm growing hundreds of onions from seed this year at my allotment. Whilst I'm at it, I'm going to give you all some good to know information about growing onions as well.
Whether you decide to grow them from seed, sets, or even starts, anyone can use the information I'm giving in this video.
Onions are a big favorite of mine, and a must have at my allotment garden. They're such a versatile vegetable - one of the most versatile, and definitely up there with other crops like potatoes and tomatoes.
My goal is to become more self sufficient. Last year we grew enough onions to last around 6 months. This year we are trying to double up so we have enough to last a year! very ambitious but I'm sure we can do better each year.
If you found any of the information in this video useful, be sure to give it a like (it goes a long way!).
And there's going to be all sorts of gardening content coming up on the channel this year, so to be sure you never miss any, subscribe and click the bell icon so you'll be notified whenever I release a new gardening video!

100% agree that red onions are more difficult to germinate than white. I sometimes wonder just how old the seed is in the packages as entire packages can result in only a few successfully germinating. Good job the seed is so cheep. I'm tempted to harvest my own seed - but you need to have about a dozen plants in a clump going to seed to ensure there is good cross pollenisation .

I've actually thought about saving my own seed from onions but wondered if it is even worth doing. Seen as onion seeds are so cheap

I usually grow from sets but bought some Red Baron seeds this year as well so it’ll be interesting to see how that pans out. Enjoying your channel. 👍🏼

I've gone and bought a couple of bags of onion sets to run a controlled experiment to see the difference from seeds to sets. I'll be sharing that on here too! Not like I have enough onions already haha 😂 Good luck with your seeds! I've found growing onions from seed to be a particularly enjoyable experience watching them grow!

This is a great video, I have subscribed and will catch up on the rest of the videos. I'm setting my onion seeds away today on my heat mat, I have leeks in the heated propagator and overwintering chilli plants in the other one. I have Broad Beans and Sweet Peas sown in the Greenhouse. I have just become a co-worker on my local allotment, we started on it yesterday putting a Fruit Cage up in the snow flurries, and making a compost bint from pallets.

Excellent! Pallets are great for composting. I'm planning on setting some pallet bays on my allotment, when I have time. Happy growing and thanks for the sub! Hope you can find my videos useful in the future 🧑‍🌾😊

Had the dreaded Allium Leaf Miner reached your site yet? It's now reached my site and I've had to move to fresh beds for my Onions, Garlic & Leeks, and buy a load of Enviromesh to cover them 😢with. There goes my savings for several years.

Oh gutting! I've heard a lot of people having this issue. I've luckily not had any at all surprisingly! I'm usually hit with mildew and sometimes white rot. Famous last words 😂

I grow from seed more varieties and different day lengths here in the US. We usually just separate them when planting, any benefit to moving them to their own cell? Great video by the way.

Thanks! You know, i think it's just different ways of doing things. The plants have more space for roots to grow in their own modules as opposed to being all crowded together in a tray. I've found that they'll grow much quicker in their own modules this way. Ill keep them under cover in their modules till late March/early April.

Good video all the traditional gardeners around me say don't water a fortnight before harvesting helps prevent neck rot
@downtoearthwithjim
@downtoearthwithjim 7 месяцев назад
Thanks! I can definitely see the logic behind that. I'm lucky to have limited issues with my onions. Mildew mostly, and I can never seem to avoid it no matter what I do. Thankfully it doesn't affect the bulbs only the foliage as the mildew appears right before harvest time in June/July
