I actually really like the splotch caused by the droplet from the last video, and how it leaves a bare spot on the sunburst. I think it actually really gives it character.

Yo, a Dremel 4000 and the Dremel router table attachment and you'll be making custom pick guards faster than you can sell them.

Great post! Really appreciate your Dad humor (being a Dad, and all), and your easy does it, perfectionist attitude. I’ve put together my own parts- caster Strat. I would like to get a Novo, which is why I’m here...really nice job!

Another great video. I love the idea of how you routed the lifeguard on the pedestals for someone that doesn't have a routing table One thing, when using mesh pads up to 12k grit, you can dry sand thru
@MichaelLagerstedt
@MichaelLagerstedt 3 года назад
I tried dry sanding but it was definitely better wet... just be sure not to put to much water on the wood 😉👍🏼

I'm doing my first build with a 3-color burst. Unfortunately mine didn't turn out as pretty as yours. What I've seen in many videos for the clear coat is to do 3 light to medium coats and let dry thoroughly for a couple of days. Do 3 more and same drying time. After you apply however many coats you want (never more than 3 coats per spray session), start level sanding after 2-3 weeks of drying/curing, using successive grits around 1200, 1500, 2000. I think on my neck I did 800, 1200, 1500. It will be hazy but then clean with naptha. Then get some foam buffing pads for your drill. Use a medium polish and a fine polish. Start with the medium, polish until you feel you've gotten as far as you can. Wipe it clean so that none of the polish residue remains or it will get mixed with the fine polish. I guess you could clean it with naptha, especially if you've touched it with your fingers. Then, use the fine polish with a different foam buffing pad and polish it until you get the mirror finish. Some people will then use a swirl remover which I think can be applied with a soft cloth, and maybe finish with a preservation polish. I got my lacquer and polishes from StewMac.com. Between the medium and fine polishes, let the guitar sit for about 15 minutes to cool off before going to the fine. I'm a novice and in a steep learning curve so I'm not trying to be a know-it-all. I'm just sharing what I've studied, and it did work great on the neck. What's cool is to watch these videos, then try it myself and get the same results. I really like your pickguard work. I'm going to have to buy a router now. :) Good luck on your future projects. By the way, all of the procedures were for nitro-lacquer.

Hi Thanks so much for your comment. Your extensive research seems to be paying off. Well done. I really like the kind of rough and very thin Novo finish and didn’t go for the glass like surface. I think that’s a lot harder to achieve... sounds to me like you will be able to do it. Thanks for sharing your research. 👍🏼😉 Just great

Isn't showing how you made the template kindof important?
@MichaelLagerstedt
@MichaelLagerstedt 8 месяцев назад
You are right. I could have gone into more details on that. If you check out this video at play time 13:18 you get an idea of how I did it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BgAUoH3TVVA.htmlsi=oYI99R66R2N5s9tE Basically, I printed the template as a poster from Adobe reader, and put the four pieces together with tape . Then I cut out the paper template and transferred the shape of the pick guard to the mdf. After that, I cut out the shape roughly with the jigsaw and then I took my time fine-tuning it by sanding it until I was happy with the template shape. It’s a pretty long process, but with a cup of coffee in the Sun, I find it super relaxing work. I hope this helps. Thank you so much for watching and thanks for your comment 😃🙏🏻

What drill bit did you use when going through the pickguard material?

I think I was using a 3 mm metal drill bit… that is a bit made for drilling metal. Thanks so much for watching 🙏🏻😃

I ordered a pickguard from a company called Dragonfire. I asked for a Floyd rose route for the bridge, but they didn't cut it accordingly. Would it be easy to modify it so it'll fit the bridge, or should I send it back? They offered to recut it.
@MichaelLagerstedt
@MichaelLagerstedt 2 года назад
Hi Matthew Thanks for watching 🙏. Definitely send it back and let them do it. Making a pick guard with out the proper templates and a routing table is not that easy. So unless you are experienced in that stuff let them 😉

A great job, but I don't get the big hole in the front? Even relic's there wouldn't be a huge hole...to me it marrs the overall look.
@MichaelLagerstedt
@MichaelLagerstedt 3 года назад
I don’t know... to me it’s a part of the woods history and the fact that it’s not something I did but a hole made by a hand made nail in 1808 just makes it cool I think 😎👍🏼
