I'm no expert, literally just a teenager sharing what I've learned over the course of the last few years. Biggest take away is to start today. Time is your most valuable resource. I was lucky enough to start building a following in middle school and after 7 years this is where that took me. There are so many different ways to make a living as an artist, I'd love to hear what has worked and not worked for you guys if you're comfortable sharing below!
@lilsun

For sure!! honestly its super helpful for new artists to share their tips :) especially social media tips. the algorithms really dont like showing us. but we need to make sure we keep increasing our audiences!
@aldebaran853
@aldebaran853 3 года назад
@@lilsun honestly tricking the algorithm is quite simple (doesn't mean it's easy). 1. You need to upload frequently and consistently (at least once a week for example). 2. The length of your video have to be short (usually no more than 5-10 mins, but there's some exception). 3. Also, you need to keep on with the trend and what's new. Algorithm is pretty much a system that acts like business teams in a big record company. I however advice you not to hop on trend too much. Because it's better to build a long term following than a shorter one. Most viewers will not easily get interested by just watching your one popular video. I hope some of these tips help. I'm no RU-vidr or artist myself (hopefully I can make it), but this is what I have noticed with some channels. Hope this is helpful :D

I just started getting commission portraits last year, though it kinda difficult but i manage to accept revisions and you are right about having a followers, like in facebook, instagram and any social media platforms, but i mostly post open for commissions on facebook and i got clients mostly locally from my city... So yeah, i faced some hardships and being critized but i used them as an energy to improve.. IDK if this counts but this is my odd job- When I was like 5-8 years old I would steal the garden rocks from my neighbor’s front yard and then take them home, wash them, and then paint them however I pleased. After this I would logically grab my wheel barrel - toss the rocks in - then go around my neighborhood selling them as paper weights. They were a quarter to a dollar - depending on size

undercharging for your art lowers the value of other artist's work, you're overly critical of your artwork so you can't see how you actually compare skills wise to other artists, meaning the level your customers will put you at and the level you think you're at are going to be very different, and the other artists who you definitely don't think you're as good as are going to suffer for it when they lose business because your work is the same quality at an exploitative price, you're exploiting yourself, stop it. If you really can't accept charging at least 18 dollars an hour then you shouldn't be selling your art, build your confidence first then come back to it.

I’d just like to add since you mentioned a lot of artists start off on Etsy and then move to their own store later. The reason why lots of artists chose to do this is because Etsy as a platform allows for people who don’t necessarily follow you to find you and purchase from you. It’s a really good option if you don’t have much of a social media following since it gives you some much needed exposure. Plus when you have a small following, an even smaller portion of that following might buy from you. Whereas your own online store won’t really be found if people don’t know you. Though having your own store does come with less costs and customization. TL;DR Etsy is better if you need exposure because you don’t have much of a following, your own store is better if you already have a following.

I get so uninspired because I feel like I take SUCH a long time on art. I am massive perfectionist that can't help obsessing over every line. If I charged even minimum wage for my art people would be paying $300+ for work that is no where near worth that price. So... I make about $1.50 a hour.
@annalynn870
@annalynn870 3 года назад
If it takes you that many hours it’s worth every penny!! It’s your time, your skill, and your art, which will cost however it costs and you shouldn’t bring down the price just because you like to spend more time on the details! That’s what make your art unique! 💗
@jogold867
@jogold867 3 года назад
try doing timed gesture drawings. go on a website like line of action and do 30 second figure drawings. It really teaches you not to be so precious with every drawing because you simply don't have time for more than a few lines. Fill pages with these sketches so you feel more comfortable with working quickly and loosely. Hope that's of some ue to you

If you are a university student, I recommend checking in with departments, student newspapers and orgs that host events, if they need any flyer, portraits etc. I draw a lot of science related art for when my bio department is hiring or publishing scientific papers and they want to promote their content on social media. Sometimes you can get commissions that way, other times your uni could set up a specific student position.

So be kind and supportive and maybe they'll start up a convo! I think another thing to remember is that some people are just dummy busy and it takes time to reply to everyone so don't take it personally! I would say focus on your craft! sometimes the most valuable thing you can do is just improve the quality of your work. in the long term that is what is going to benefit you most. but also don't doubt yourself, I've seen really simple drawings that just have a ton of personality and story to them and people go crazy to get it on t-shirts or stickers. so just put yourself out there and see what kind of response you get!

Well, I'm not really an expert but I think if you should start even though you think you are too old for this or too late in this case. I know it's depressing to see people that are younger than you to be so successful already but I think everyone has their own time/pace when they'll truly shine. Just keep pursuing what you love and then maybe one day you'll be successful too.

So if there is something I can tell you as a 10 years older artist is that making a life as an illustrator is not easy but it isn't as hard as people think! In this years I made money as a freelancer through commissions and online stores, comic-cons and illustration fairs with originals/prints/crafts... as well as teaching (individually and in groups), self publishing books via kickstarter, and all shorts of jobs for different clients: illustration for books and other projects, mural art, advertising agencies... as well as my very personal work as an author, and getting art residencies and other funds is a great way to expand your inspiration and getting paid while you make your art. I also had work with a fixed salary in art schools, and in my last 3 years I have been full time concept artist and bg artist for animation movies -and by the way, animation industry is full of fantastic jobs opportunities :) My point is that it requires lots of creativity to find ways to monetize your work, it could be risky, and you can get tired sometimes, but every time I had a minimum wage job, I realized pretty quickly that I was able to make a lot more money as an artist, remember your time is valuable and yours skills too! So just keep going even if it looks hard, will be worth it, and be always open to learn from other people's experiences like in this video, I did personally learn some valuable things from Matthew's video!

@KirbyMArt

I agree. too many people worried about making money, when really they should be focused on skill. Ik that people need money and have to survive, but better art will make the business much easier
@butasimpleidiotwizard
@butasimpleidiotwizard 3 года назад
You don't have to do that though, the basic rule is if you aren't comfortable selling your work at the appropriate price (so above minimum wage) then don't sell your work, just practice. If you feel comfortable then there's no reason you shouldn't start selling it, you'll know if you need to work on it based on whether people buy it or not (which could also be a result of not putting yourself out there enough but practicing your art more gives you time to do that too)
@KirbyMArt
@KirbyMArt 3 года назад
@@butasimpleidiotwizard Yes, I think you're totally right. I think PERFECT is a little much, but having a good foundation will defiantly benefit sales in the beginning. I think the important thing is realizing that if you don't make a ton of money at the beginning, its not a reason to give up, but a reason to improve. although it may be discouraging. But you're right, if they are comfortable, give it a go
