How I Made My 3rd Bartop Arcade Machine, A Step by Step Process

This is my third arcade machine that I ever built and it is bigger and better than anything I previously built. This bar-top arcade is going to a friend as a thank you gift. I ordered a Pandora's Box 4S arcade kit that came with joystick buttons, a Pandora's Box 4s, power supply, speakers, speaker covers, amplifier, coin slot, jamma cable, and cabinet lock. The kit was about $150 dollars and was purchased on Aliexpress. The T-molding was about $15 from ebay. The monitor was given to me by my friend. The angle aluminum was $7 from Home Depot. The marquee acrylic panel, LED light strip, and back panel was sourced from my own stock of left over parts.
I'm most proud of the coin slots that are incorporated into the marquee panel. I got inspiration from the numerous cardboard coin sorter projects on RU-vid and thought it would be a great idea to incorporate it into an arcade machine. The coin slots work using optical switches and a credit is registered when the optical switch is interrupted by the coin rolling through it. The chute will filter out coins that are of the wrong size so only quarters and larger will be registered as valid credits.
This video is a step by step process of how I built the arcade machine and is broken down into the following sections:
Introduction
Stage 1: Design
Stage 2: Drafting
Stage 3: Cutting
Stage 4: Mounting Blocks
Stage 5: Test Assembly
Stage 6: Mount Monitor
Stage 7: Make Holes
Stage 8: Routering
Stage 9: Painting
Stage 10: Assembly
Stage 11: T-Molding
Stage 12: Marquee Frame
Stage 13: Joy Buttons
Stage 14: Back Panel
Stage 15: Coin Slots
Stage 16: Wiring
Stage 17: Marquee Lighting
Final Stage: Play Testing
This project was started some time around June, it was finished around October after a long hiatus. The video took much longer to make as I had many things competing for my time but I'm happy that I was able to finish it. On to the next project!

Very impressive. A couple unique features here that I have not seen before. The toggle switch to enable free play mode, and the coin slots in the marquee with the optical switches registering only quarters and above. Innovative. Well done.

Your's looks pretty good too. I've yet to make a full size arcade. I don't have the space to justify anything other than bartops though.

Awesome tutorial here. Did you have more details on how to setup the optical switch, wiring it, etc?
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory 3 года назад
Thanks Neil! Sorry for late reply. I don't have anything published but I found this picture which is exactly what I did. i.stack.imgur.com/HoghC.png Where you wire the output pin would depend on what kind of arcade box you are running. In my case, the output pin in the picture would be wired to the Player 1 Coin pin of the Pandora's Box. If you are using something like a Raspberri Pi to emulate an arcade, it would go to the GPIO pin that is used for the coin slot. Furthermore if you using a computer motherboard with a USB I/O joystick expander, it would be wired to one of the pins on that expander board. I may do another video on just the coin slot/optical switch build as I think another person also requested this. It is in the queue :)

Very nice video! Certainly not telling you what to do, spending the extra $30 for an actual Suzo Happ JAMMA harness can save some headaches :-) Nicely done! Did you have plans for the bartop or did you just come up with it?
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory 5 лет назад
Dan Flood. yea i think it is worth to spend more next time to avoid headache. i started with monitor and designed everything around it. its loosely based on my 2nd arcade but simply tried to improve upon it. 2nd arcade had too small of marquee and didn't have correct angle for coin slots. next go i would want to put a small radius on the corners to make tmolding go in easier.
@StonyAcresEstate
@StonyAcresEstate 4 года назад
Great video, thanks! One question, how does the monitor "turn on"? I am doing a project that is similar, and I don't want to have the monitor power switch visible. Does your monitor automatically come on when power is applied?
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory 4 года назад
Stony Acres thanks! Yes the monitor comes on automatically when powered. A lot of monitors will do this and it will automatically scan for an input source on power up. If monitor doesnt see any inputs it will just goto standby mode. The arcade should boot by the time this happens though.

TLil21 hi there. if you want a large selection than Digikey.com but it may be expensive and overwhelming. you may want to check ebay for better price. such as here www.ebay.com/i/271818943311?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=271818943311&targetid=474173449429&device=m&adtype=pla&googleloc=9033255&poi=&campaignid=1669934831&adgroupid=65058350299&rlsatarget=pla-474173449429&abcId=1139296&merchantid=113746984&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_9zqmJGa4gIVchh9Ch0L_gxxEAkYASABEgI51fD_BwE

how do you get to power button on Monirtor
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory Год назад
Dont need to push it generally. On power up from main power switch on back which turns on everything, the monitor will turn on and look for video source and the pandoras box will output video to monitor at same time.

gan9e i curious what kind of features you would want in a vertical bartop kit. Two player or one? Multi game emulation or jamma interface? Etc. I've seen several kits for just the cabinet on etsy.com but not the entire system.

@@LockeLaboratory Thanks for the link, I might eventually contact a seller on there for a custom job where I supply the artwork for a custom cabinet (buttons really) which will be for my own home made arcade shooter called "Galaxy Pilot" which is a fantasy arcade game from the 80's based around a classic arcade game from 1984 called Star Force, well it's taken me fours years to write the code and I'm just about 5% away from finishing the game, I need to work on a few bits & bobs and then I thought I'll install the game inside a real-world arcade cabinet for a promo to sell the software of the game on Steam perhaps... either way I wrote a special version of my game just with that in mind and it even has it's own service menu showing coins in and time running etc... I used to be an arcade engineer myself back in the 90's and the games of my youth were these arcade style shooters... and so after years not really making anything I grasped the nettle so to speak and made this game... and I just need a cab for it... but its not just ready quite yet so I'm just looking around ahead of time to give momentum to doing the final push to get the game finished...
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory 4 года назад
gan9e that sounds way cool! Id really like to see your finished product and check out the game if you ever post it to steam. I wish I had coding skills like that to make my own game... I grew up with going to arcades and could spend hours in them with a few quarters.

whats the best option for a bartop? i own a pc with 320 gb 4 ram and core 2 duo and i own a rasberry pi 3
@LockeLaboratory
@LockeLaboratory 5 лет назад
al ubaldini if I were to do it again i would use a PC or laptop. This is because the emulation allows more game systems and it is overall faster. The downsides are that it takes a little more work to setup user interface (frontend) and it is overall bulkier/heavier and a little more fragile. The raspberri pi and pandoras boxs seem more durable than a PC. Pandoras box is easiest to setup since it is simply plug and play.

@@LockeLaboratory is because I dont use this pc but I'm from Costa Rica there is few artisanal guy selling Barton but it cost expensive until 500$usd
@LockeLaboratory

al ubaldini yes you can save money if you make bartop yourself. It will cost about 150 dollar in parts instead of 500 dollars. it is labor intensive however.

al ubaldini there are some cheap bartops ive seen on ebay and aliexpress which are based on pandoras box for around 200. they also have just the joystick box with pandoras box inside which you can connect to TV. i still would prefer bartops however.
