In this episode: We continue our work on the log cabin, I demonstrate how I cut log notches, my dad and I stay at the bunkhouse, we go on a cold nighttime excursion to gather firewood, and I test out a powerful LED headlamp.
My dad and I have been on a journey to build our own log cabin. This series of videos is a 'behind-the-scenes' look of our bigger "Log Cabin on a Budget" series.

When I first saw your videos, I just thought you were a punk kid playing in the woods. I was dead wrong. You've shown nothing but dedication and craftsmanship, skipping shortcuts, showing that you've done your research, and willing to make sacrifices (your dirtbike and snowmobile) to accomplish your dream. You've shown craftsmanship and care in your work, given thanks to your father, and been a very stand-up guy. I don't care if the update comes after Christmas, I'm willing to wait.

Good on you for all you have accomplished working one day a week and the odd extra day here and there. I'm glad you save a day to be with your family, otherwise, all your hard work would be kind of pointless... Glad you have the opportunity to work with your dad and sometimes your brothers. What great memories you are making.

Your work to date has been just great Your cabin's rising quick Your tractors too are a help to you Their towing does the trick Every time we see you, you're always on the go That despite the sight of all the falling snow You seem real glad with help from Dad In every task you do Giving you his fathers care With everything you dare Be that old or new Each log you cut and quickly fit Makes one less to place and knit Until at last you'll stand aloof And apply it's crowning roof And then inside you can reside And sit beside your Dad A roaring cabin stove alight Above it all the stars will fill the night With best wishes for your continued safety and success in 2019

Another great video your skill with a chainsaw as well of those of your father are superb. Good to see the bunkhouse again, if I remember rightly this was made mostly by your father. In years to come you will always look on fondly at the bunkhouse. It has sheltered you and stored your important equipment during the process of making your dream cabin for your family.

I have worked a fair amount with white cedar. Most of my experience has been with sidewall shingling. The longevity of white cedar is stunning. In Massachusetts one house built 200 years before, the nails were rusted through and the shingles were falling off the house. All the shingles were removed, more than half of them were still in good shape and simply turned over and reused on the reshingle. The Quincy Market Place in downtown Boston were originally wharves for the Port of Boston. Those solid block granite walls of the buildings were footed on cedar logs that were sunk into the harbor bed centuries ago. I was there, part of the reconstruction, in 1975 when they were excavated down to and inspected. Living in the noxious mud of Boston Harbor, completely anaerobic conditions, 20 feet down, when a chainsaw was fired up to inspect the wood, the cedar smell of fresh cuts permeated the entire site. The bark was a rotted black slimy mess,, but the wood beneath was as fresh as the day they were sunk and buried, both heart wood and sap wood. With wide overhangs, and the extreme care you took to foot the building, your cabin may become a time machine,, seeing into the future 200 or 300 years at the least. Your good work will be known and appreciated long after your name may be forgotten. There are few writers that can speak across centuries, but your novel, writ large, just might.

I am impressed and I am enjoying watching how to build a log cabin. I learned how to paint by watching my husband paint our house. I feel like I could build a log cabin from watching your videos. I love to build things with wood like cages & picket fences and mend my deck. Problem is I am a 71 year old woman and everyone tells me I shouldn't be doing these things at my age. I might compromise and build a log house from a kit. You are fortunate to have a forest in your family and as a Canadian in Ontario I am curious what province you are in.

I don't know if this will be helpful or not, but I wanted to suggest scoring your notch line with a hand tool, like a chisel. It may not save you any time, and it may not even be worthwhile if you're using a chainsaw. It might give you a smoother notch and a tighter fit. I know time is a factor though. It's coming along nicely, I love seeing the updates.

Something that my dad once remarked to my mom when; as moms do, went to check on him while he was working in their garage in the good ole' Texas summer heat. (he'd been out there too long) Exasperated and soaked in sweat, he answered her query with these terse immortal words; "I have CUT that thing and CUT that thing and CUT that thing and its STILL too short!" i love my dad :)

The log house my father built 42 years ago uses the same notch technique has some hand cut and some saw cut because he was told a similar idea that you mention. You can't see the difference all still solid as the day they were cut. He thinks this is because the open pores are upside down in the notch and self drain. He lives on the west coast of Canada where it pretty wet too.
