Lixada fire stove needs some small adjustments to make it a bit safer, My review video of this stove 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 • Reviewing and field te... OSCAR Outdoors 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 • Lixada Backpacking Sto...
I got the hinged "fire tray" version, sturdy enough to sit on. Then B&m bargains had disposable bbq's 10p reduced so took the grill mesh and folded up to hold embers.. Glows red hot, cooks, heats, grand job. Thanks for the tips All the best from North Nottinghamshire Simon
Hi Dan, randomly I asked for one of these as Christmas present to use as a mini fire pit. It was only after I pulled the hinge pins out to strip the blue protective plastic off (45mins later). I vaguely remembered seeing one on RU-vid and found your video which I had previously watched and forgotten about. I agree the stove is seriously unstable. Using a Dremel I cut the 4 slots to hold the grill (3mm deep) which improved the stability a lot. I cut a cardboard template to size the plate the sticks sit on and it made it again made a Hugh difference so my brother is cutting a piece of perforated plate steel 140mm x 137mm to sit in the bottom. Has I not seen your mods I wouldn't have bothered but they definitely make a huge difference. Perhaps a "How to" video from scratch to make the stove usable. Thanks for the video it was really useful.
Great mod which has improved the stove massively, it's clearly a lot stronger now. I really like the simple change you have made to the top grill so it locks in place now 👍
I don't do this often, buy something then watch the reviews. But here I am watching how to modify it to make it better and I haven't even had it delivered yet. From what I've seen, they work a lot like a Rocket stove with little smoke. Great tips👍
Top tips them Dan. Ta muchly. I've modded mine much the same. The ash tray doesn't need to be trimmed down though. I just filed either side of the bottom of the opening and it slid in great. That way it also stops the ash tray lifting, thus strengthening and stabilising stove even more. I do like the fire tray mesh you've used. Whats it known as? I've got to get me some of that.
Personally i would drill 4 holes and file them out and not cut the handle odd the top grill. Less fiddly if you have a problem and need to take it off when it is lit. Will fit any way then. Cheers
I just watched your video on modifying the Chinese multi fuel cooker, a big thank you for this great idea, within half an hour ( plus one cut on my finger later) I now have a more stable cooker to cook on a big thumbs up from me, ps I watch your channe regularly so keep those videos coming has you are a big inspiration to us beginners in bushcraft 👍👍👍👍👍
Mine is slightly different to yours the ember grill is attached on mine via a hinge so its sturdier anyway but I like the idea of cutting slots for the grill handles Take care Roo
Excellent video of your modifications, I have just received my new (similar stove) took me an hour to remove that blue film covering, I wished I had worn gloves, the metal is like razor blades and I ended up with several deep cuts and blood everywhere, so anyone else BEWARE. I will give it a burn test when my wounds heel.
Simple and practical changes that have a real impact on stability and safety. Excellent mods mate. If they change their design to match yours they need to pay you commission.
hi, just a thought...maybe if you cut a notch in the end of the underside of the two pegs (the ones you said you might have cut too short) then they might have less tendency to want to fall out when being moved about. nice mods, thanks for sharing. ;)
Hello there. Tried mine out tonight for the first time with your mods, and a bit of my own. A fantastic set up. I've spent time and money to find a good camping set up.... And I've finally found it. Wish I could load photos to show you. Thanks for your imput on RU-vid its appreciated.
That a lot better mate, you should have left the cooking grill as it was with out cutting the bar off at one end, it looks like the bar drops in nice at the other end and it looks like it holds the sides from bowing out, with the other end just picking through the holes that side might pop out when cooking and the rack pulls out of the holes and drop in the fire, what if you had a quarter pounder on it at the ahhhhh lol. How are things where you are with this virus? I do hope you and your family are keeping safe? My wife and I are in the self isolation due to health issues.
I like what you did with the tray at the bottom to stop the embers falling through I think I might do that but my tray on my one is connected to one of the sites so it gives it a bit more rigidity but I might still have a go but what ever anybody does and what you have done to your firebox makes it a personal item to you which could probably make it last longer well done Dan
Definitely improved the stove no end. Really like it. Mine is slightly different, no pegs and the ash grill is attached inside. I’m going to drill holes to slot pegs in at a height to allow an alcohol burner to be inserted. Also I’ll do the two mods you’ve done to the top grill and I’ll add finer mesh to the bottom grill inside. Thanks for the tips.
I like what you did with the top grate, going to do mine like this. I did a similar thing with the bottom fire grate only I used a double layer of expanded steel mesh because that's what I had laying around. I also drilled four holes on the sides close to the hinges to run some wire tent pegs through, which I drilled holes in on the straight side to allow for a small cotter pin to be put through and hold it tight, again using what I had on hand. It's really not a bad stove for the exremely low price. Just needs a bit of buttoning up to make it better
I have the pskook version I got off amazon it’s so much more stable the bottom rack is on a hinge so folds down into place and the top grill is a tight fit from the start
Mate if someone thinks this is a pointless video they are not worth worrying about 😎 great mods to that stove , easily made something good into something great. I want one now😁 I bet the price goes up because of increased demand now 😏
Yeah much better.. When I had one of those copy stoves it Cained the fuel way to much.. I done a similar thing with the mesh and it slowed it right down and kept the embers better.. Nice work 👌🏽
I've got the hinged version, so it's a bit more stable. I am going to file some slots for the top tray to make it a bit more secure. If I can scare some up I might make a plate insert to cover the grill at the bottom though. I think I've got some scrap titanium sheet kicking about somewhere. so I might mod that
I modified mine a bit. Replaced the pegs with 4 little 2,5cm screws. Removed the useless handles. Replaced door ring with a really light ring. I did it mainly for weight savings for hiking. I only use top grill when boiling water, so i just put it on diagonally. Got to find some mesh for the bottom from an instant grill.
I have the exact stove. But it has hinges riveted into the bottom on the inside, the fire grate just swings down into 2 hooks opposite the hinges. Nice and tight
Some good ideas there, take no notice of anyone who isn't interested. These changes clearly make it better, and you also have the pleasure of figuring it out. Personally, I think you'd be better off keeping both handles on the top and slotting the holes on both sides instead of just one. That would stop both sides from hingeing outwards like you've achieved with the one with the handle and slots. In reality, it wouldn't have cost the manufacturer any more to have implemented these simple design changes. The base could just have been bigger, and that would have made a big difference. Maybe you can contact the manufacturer and see what they say, they ought to be grateful.
Thanks for the video, useful tips, I’ve only done the mod to the grill so far, just that has made a vast improvement. I think the ash try is a complete waste of time, if you pull it out the Ash will just fall to the ground? Might as well let it do that in the first place? By turning it 90o using the bigger slots as you’ve done will enable some Ash to come out on the tray.
I was wanting to get one But....Same issues that You Fixed, One More issue I see that Could make Hinge Area more Sturdy but need to wait till its In Hand to see if my Idea will work or not. I will make a Video after I've made my Alterations and see what You and the People think, after enough Changes, May be able to Remake and Copyright it, We'll see. Great Video
thats some great ideas dan. simple mods but they make it work better and safer . when you put them side by side . its much clearer you can defo see the issues lets hope lixada are watching and solve these problems
great video i have modified nealy evey stove i have bought they were cheap so i dont mind spending a bit of time making them from a good stove to a great stove just a few mods. stay safe pal
Thanks for this Dan. Great instructional video Did you weld the stainless sheet onto the fire rack or fasten it in some other way? Also where can you get such sheets? Stay Safe
Well done mate you’ve turned a problem into a solution great job my friend and do try your original curry pot noodle with HP brown sauce it thickens up the watery sauce john from Sheffield in England Great Britain
okay so most people haven't worked out that the top grill is only supposed to sit on one way , it actually sits in perfectly , also the side "handles" are there to further secure the top grill by placing them upright & placing the grill handles over the top to stop it accidently sliding off , also the bottom tray now has a massive gap where wind will just blow ash everywhere , the only thing i agree with was the burn tray , its gapped way too wide for smaller fire material but they have now put clips for it to sit in so its more stable
Great mods Dan. I bought mine on Ali Express a few months ago for £12 it's the one that is all hinged though. I've not used it yet. Really like what you did with the top grill. ATB mate
Great mods I’m not big fan of the folding stove even the BushBox XL I have the smaller BushBox pocket stove that comes apart I’d like to see some one come out a large model of the BushBox pocket stove the was heavy gauge stainless like maybe 18 or 16 gauge that you could cook bigger pots on I’m not worried about weight as much as strength an durability great video great mods just wanted to share my thoughts Thanks
Well I just got a new one of these the burn rack is in 2 tabs riveted on and it’s a tite fit it just drops down in place when you open it. There are no pins with it. The top rack fits a lot tighter. I didn’t like the way the ash tray fits on the side so I cut a small notch about 1/16 inch at the bottom of the hole with the tabs it sits on so the tray can go through the front or back and that really stiffens up the sides. I’m going to get something like the burn grate you have but haven’t found any yet but I have a short can from some chicken I’m using for a burn basket that I can put the wood in or use with wood pellets
Very good job my friend.Love the way you improved the safeness of the stove. I got one I made my self and going to use your improvements if you don't mind. LOVE IT KEEP IT UP.
The turn ring could do with improving it gets hot hot hot . Unless you carry gloves . However it,s a good bit of kit i will do your modifications .thanks mucker (loyally i served )
Really nice mods. I have an original Bushbox XL, that I have had for some time and a cheap Chinese one, I got for Christmas off my daughter. I like the mods you have done, and I will be doing the same.
I'm a little late to the party, but I've finally bought a stove like yours. Can I presume you peeled of as much of the blue as possible then allowed the burn to deal with the small bits.
Fantastic modification you've made there👍 Brilliant job, great improvement to stove. You have definitely increased the stability of the stove and made it more sturdy. Keep doing what you're doing. ATB 👍
I like modifying and encourage for it. I think your mod works well, though sometimes these type of products oughta be somewhat flimsy to allow warping due to heat or other bending during adventures. Surely you can adjust if problems occur but for general sales it may perhaps be better with loose tolerances. Also you added weight but won in performance so i'd say it's a good deal.
Superb buddy.. Great tips on how to improve a cheaper but very usable product... With you being a metal worker.. You could almost release your vastly improved version.. Just saying bro.. Great video, really enjoyed this one👍
Nice mods and it's always satisfying to improve something. Did you weld the plate with holes to the original grate, I guess one could use wire if welding isn't an option.
The plate in the bottom is a great idea I think your supposed to put carry handle's up and fit the grill plate sides over them to keep it in place, Shure I seen pictures of it set up like that 👍
Top draw I was waiting to see how you did it so, yes great video Dan as per. A good buddy looks after his pal and I know you'll do a top job for your mate. Stay safe.
