I saw this on Facebook at thought of you… The History of Aprons: The History of 'APRONS' I don't think most kids today know what an apron is. The principle use of Mom's or Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.. And when the weather was cold, she wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, she walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes. Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about aprons. REMEMBER: Mom's and Grandma's used to set hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love

My hubby and I just got our freeze dryer yesterday. We live in the middle of nowhere and driving 2 1/2 to 3 hours away to an affordable grocery store is not always easy for us, especially in the winter. The Harvest Right was a fair chunk of money, but we saved $200 by getting a factory blemished one (one small scratch about an inch long on the side). I think it will pay for it's self by not having to make those long trips to the grocery store as often.

I've been vacuum sealing romaine in jars like that for years. It's fabulous!! You can mix in some iceberg too if you like. Those are the only two types of lettuce that really work well with this process. The only other tip I have is to line your big bowl with a clean dish towel or paper towels and do one final light rub to super dry the lettuce. It gets any last bit of moisture off.

@@ranakacir3893, unfortunately I've tried this with spinach leaves and it doesn't work well at all. The spinach wilted. Romaine and iceberg really are the two best for this process.

One of my favorite channels for canning, dehydrating and freeze drying is Rosered Homestead. She prefreezes the foods she will be drying and she said it works much better. Choose NOT FROZEN even though it is , and foods come out better. Check out her RU-vid channel. She’s very knowledgeable!
@rockymountainhomesteadangela
You're so lucky you have a freeze drier!! That's on my list. The past year and a half I've used my excalibur dehydrator a TON. I've pressure canned so many meats, meals, vegetables. Ive water bath canned so many different things. Today is pressure canning sweet potatoes. Pantry is bursting at the seams and that is the best feeling, especially when you have a lot of mouths to feed (8 kids) Also have feed put back for our dogs, cats and chickens. It's already "sweata weatha" 🤣 (Im originally from massachusetts) where I am in Colorado so it's not unbearable to run the canner all day. Blessings to you and your family!

I wrap it in heavy duty foil and I store it in the crisp drawer in my fridge for a month. Next time you have corn try warming corn in a pot with 3 heaping table spoons of mayo , a tsp garlic powder,a tsp onion powder, a top of ground Chipotle Chile, sprinkle some Paprika ,salt and pepper to your liking. If you want Greek yogurt in your smoothies you can freeze dry blobs of that to put in your bags. You can make you're own milk powders freeze and blitz them up in a blender, instant coffee.. so many things! Also I heard the rings on the cans, especially in the fridge promote mould growth. So best to store without rings. The tops are sealed theyre not going anywhere 🤷‍♀️
