“HOW DO YOU AFFORD TO BUY THESE LUXURY GOODS?”
This is one of my No.1 questions! I have had lots of new viewers asking me this so I thought I would answer: How I afford luxury, How I save for Luxury, Does my husband have a problem with me shopping?

Sophie, please remind all to save for their retirement. I know it feels a long time away for most of your viewers, but I am in my early 60's and my husband saved and planned well for our retirement. We now live on the beach and he is retired. I work in the hotel industry for fun, I don't need to work. But, it's important for people to know that the best way to be safe in the future financially, is to save, save, save.

I think working a job after retirement is a great idea. The people I’ve known who do it seem so much more healthier and vibrant. Nothing too stressful, and something you enjoy doing. It seems to be such a different feeling when you HAVE to work as opposed to working just to keep busy.

I am so happy for Sophie and David. I think the unspoken thing here is that they share similar values when it comes to saving and spending money. I don't know if that's luck or intentional.
@KarinaSwan
@KarinaSwan 3 года назад
That's so true! I made a mistake in the past listening to men who didn't approve of something in my life (choices, hobbies, career, etc) and I've tried to tone it down or change things to "compromise", even went for jobs in the field THEY wanted me to take. That never brought anything good into my life, instead it brought abusers into it. Big mistake going away from who you are, a lot of time wasted and misery that follows.
@decemberclouds

@@KarinaSwan Same here Karina. My ex hated anything that was expensive or luxury. He refused even Apple and Samsung saying they were too expensive, all while complaining about his cheap phone ever day. We never went anywhere or did anything because it was "too expensive" but he had hobby items in the hundreds that must easily be worth thousands. :( I lost myself in that relationship and I wanted to regain me by watching videos like Sophie's! Here's to the beautiful US!
@KarinaSwan
@KarinaSwan 3 года назад
@@decemberclouds oh wow, that sounds like not one, but 3 of my exes! With the exception of hating expensive phones. They just got everything at any price for themselves, whatever they wanted, including expensive hobby items and gadgets, but when I'd spend (money I earned) on me, on anything, even a little thing that's not expensive at all, even on a $25 yoga class, they were shaming me something like: "why are you spending money!? You could've gotten me something instead". I completely know how you feel.

I really don’t care how often you mention your job because it always highlights how hard you have worked to be financially secure and successful, and how grateful you are for the life you get to live and enjoy! You never put it out there like “look at how amazing my life is...don’t you wish you could be me?” And that is SO RARE on the internet, and I appreciate that so much about all of your content. You're so right about upward mobility. I used to work in IT, where there's basically no positions between entry level and manager. And you can't become a manager without managerial experience, which you can't get at the bottom rung where they keep you. I ended up leaving that job and the industry. I had to move in with my mom halfway across the country, but I'm pursuing what I really want to do. I watch your videos because they're honest reviews about quality and trends and resale value, which really help me out buying secondhand. (Also, I'm in recovery for anorexia and it's really nice to see someone who's overcome that and gone on to be successful. To be happy.) So I thank you for your content because even though I'm not personally at a point where I can buy luxury from the source, it's still really helpful. ❤️

My husband and I still have our own bank accounts even after we got married, we both work hard and we believe our money is ours. Yes we make sure that bills are paid and we have the roof over our head and food in the stomach, and we share in paying for meals out, holidays etc , but we both have trust and freedom to spend the rest of our money how we please. I still enjoy having that element of independence, knowing that if anything were to go wrong, I still have control of finances and some security. We trust each other and it works for us.

My husband and I are the same. We both have our own very different and expensive hobbies, so it is great to have individual accounts as neither of us wants to know how much the other's new toys cost. People always how we don't fight about money and this is why. There is also a trust factor that if there is a potential major purchase, we will consult the other and listen to their opinion. He knows I will only balk at a purchase if there is a good reason, and vice versa.

I am at a totally different stage of life to you, but totally agree with your approach. I’ve been through times where every penny counted and this discipline then served me well when times were better. For anyone feeling the pinch at the moment, it will come to an end. The worst thing you can do is sabotage your future for an insignificant want of today. The economy is cyclical and your time will come. Good habits are the key to long term success, as boring as it sounds 😘

Sophie - you are such an inspiration. I’ve been watching since you had 5k followers and have such respect for how humble you are and how well you communicate. Young women around the world are struggling to find their way as the world becomes more and more complicated and costly. And expectations of beauty and designer items increases. Have you given any thought to doing some “workshops” geared towards younger people at schools or uni - that focuses on real life challenges and how youve worked through and over come them? I think you would be amazing.

I have a separate bank account on my app and I name it whatever I’m saving for. Then when I can I pop extra cash in there. Usually if my bank account has an odd amount I’ll take the odd bits and pop them in that account for example if I have 268.78 I’ll take £8.78 and put it in my savings, and my bank has £260 left, it’s silly but it grows really fast and it’s not a huge amount you’ll miss.

You are so nice to answer the same questions over and over again, lol. And I watched your old one as well. I think what would be interesting would be to do this once every 5 yrs or so but with the focus on how things changed. How the way you save for luxury is different from before (more or less into savings, different accounts etc), and if the luxury you buy also changes (less but higher priced? or more cars/bag instead of shoes etc).

Love your relationship with David💗 I think your advice is super important for people to utilize because I know many people that make a ton of money, but spend money recklessly (eating out every day instead of homemade meals, buying way too many clothes etc...) and then would be confused when I’d buy one expensive item a year. Even if you aren’t into luxury, we should still be mindful about how much $$ we spend

Thank you Sophie, hope you are having a great day. Honestly , I'm not spending as much for fashion during quarantine because of two main reasons one of them is that during covid I got the time to think and make better healthy-life related choices. Which means that I'm constantly losing weight so what would be the point of buying new clothes that will look over-sized in few months. And I'm already spending enough money on my health related stuff. That's why I prefer saving my money rather than spending it on fashion trends that might not exist later. I prefer saving the money till I have enough to buy something really valuable and timeless for myself after covid as a treat.

Thanks for this thought provoking piece. Covid has changed my spending patterns - as a self employed person in the creative arts my working life has switched to online so like you my needs have changed and my taste for in person shopping has waned. I've never really gone for labels as far as my luxury spending goes but I have definitely noticed that I am moving even more towards more small designer maker businesses to buy my clothes, looking for timeless pieces that will last and suit my lifestyle. It's lovely to build a relationship with those makers and feel I am doing my bit to keep their businesses going in these uncertain times. Currently saving for some hand made boots!

I work freelance and suffered tremendous losses due to Covid. What I have spent money on are my home and clothes I wear around the home. Realising how important it is to be comfortable in your own home was something I completely neglected as I wore designer fashion from top to toe pre-covid!

I love the finance/saving aids, I’ve always used something similar with things like weight loss and for somebody who loves order and control they’re a great tool. I’ve definitely reduced the amount of luxury I’ve purchased during lockdown, my splurges have leant towards household purchases instead and making my home environment even better than before so I can really enjoy my time out the pandemic has given me. I’d love if the situation has got some of those designer juices flowing and can’t wait to see some creative new pieces hit my favourite brands

Sophie, you are such an inspiration. Your advice is so smart. I totally agree with you about shopping not being the same experience as before Covid. Here in NYC the place is like a ghost town : so weird.

Great video as always! It is helpful and reassuring to hear this information from time to time. Social media influence you and make you feel a certain way because you decide to not buy a new handbag every two weeks.

Loved this video!! It was so helpful and relatable. Definitely COVID is making me rethink my purchases because we don’t have anywhere to go, should save up for emergencies, and like you said cannot be bothered haha! Thank you for talking about your budgeting and what your husband think, it gives me insight on my near future and balancing finances. I think COVID has just made me focus on what I need rather than what I want. Though I will splurge if I know it’s on sale or if prices are increasing (bought 5 LV items due to the increase). Otherwise I’m just buying a few sweaters in preparation for the winter. I can definitely say I’ve been saving so much and it’s so rewarding to see my bank account now versus a year ago. I think one silver lining of having nowhere to go or just caring less (on some things) is leaving a long term positive spending habit for myself. Thanks again for sharing your video!!! 💕💕💕

I have heard you talk about this but a refresher/reminder is not bad. Yes forgetting a mask really put me off the whole going out as well. Nice video, thanks for sharing 🙌❤️

I bought a bit more this year, but more considered spending if that makes sense. No fast fashion really and I've budgeted for Christmas throughout the year. Who knows what next year will bring! Always love your honesty x

Love your content Sophie! Agree that social media makes me feel inadequate at times in terms of material acquisitions. I found it helpful to hear the age when you started purchasing luxury pieces- I'm around that stage as well and feel that influencers in general aren't an apples to apples comparison to folks who work corporate/regular day jobs. Sending my best!

Thank you for your transparency about your finances. People sometimes forget that people on social media have "real" jobs other than what we see online.

Hi Sophie, we had 3 holidays canceled this year, so we took that money and had a tiled roof put on our conservatory. Hubby says it’s lovely to sit out in the summer as it was not to hot, and now the weather has changed, it’s not cold. We also had a storm porch built that it really beautiful, and keeps the warmth in when the front door is opened. I know this sounds mundane but we didn’t want to just wast the money frivolously. I was hit very hard by lockdown, and even today I find myself staying in the bedroom, hubby calls it my Happy Place, and I fear he is right. Hope you and David are well. 💐💐💐💐💐

Wow, this has made me gain even more respect and love for you. Thank you so much for sharing this and for being so open. I definitely understand and agree with what you said about social media. While I enjoy watching luxury fashion youtube channels a lot sometimes I find I get so sucked in and it just makes me get an itch to buy this or that when I honestly am not in a place where I should be making the purchases 😅 but I think when you see people half your age on social media with your dream bag or those shoes you've had your eyes on for ages, it desensitizes you to the actual monetary value and price of the item. (If that makes any sense). So hearing you speak about how hard you worked to get to where you are and the fact that you only really started making these purchases at the age of 26 and even then through bonus money is so inspirational and brings me down to earth again. I'm going to have to rewatch this video every time I feel overwhelmed about my future career, saving up, or making luxury fashion purchases hahah! You just put things into perspective. Lots of love sophie, best of luck to you and your husband in your marketing agency and thanks once again for this video!

You and David have a great relationship! Just know that you don’t have to explain yourself and how you can afford things... I know people are curious but you don’t owe anyone an explanation. You’ve both done so well and it’s amazing to see successful couples 🤘🏻

Hey Sophie great to hear your story. My story is quite similar to yours although about 10 years later than you and with three kids ( teens) - my husband and I set up our own advertising agency in Australia Saving lots of money now with no traveling ☹️ and not really inspired to purchase items because we can’t go out as we’ve been in hard lockdown for 4 months. Enjoying the family time but looking forward to shopping and dressing up again sometime soon Thanks for your honest and informative videos 😘
