How I reduce and Analyze Film Scores Have you ever wondered how I create all of those film score analyses? Now you can create them too with this (boring) but helpful guide!
If I didn't already have infinite respect respect for your work before, I do now. I work professionally in film production, so I have a good general knowledge of post-production workflows, and I VERY impressed by the work flow, and the approach you take to making one of your analyses. Hope to see HEAPS more from you!!!
I appreciate your effort in making your videos... it reflects on the quality they have. They’re really educational and fun. Such a shame you dont have many more subscribers... you do deserve a lot more. Greetings from Portugal 🇵🇹
You’re totally genius!!! Thank you for huge lessons which gave me! I’ m learning every bar, every day! I have all this scores, but you have unique way to recreate this absolute pick of classical music and fantastic skills of composers like John Williams and orchestrators like Herb Spencer, Conrad Pope, Eddie Karam, Steve Bartek and many others!
Bro, i need a tutorial on how to write the notes so fast, right now im stuck with like 1 note per minute xD bcs i still didnt figure out how to know how to know where a note is (f.e. a 4/4 beat, if the note is on 2 or 3, simplified ofc, since there are usually way more complex time signatures) I would love if you could do an in depth tutorial since i got ADHD and its really hard to learn something complex like this with a random video :/ I really respect you since this is really complex work, i hope that one day i can do my own reductions, i LOVE the star wars john williams stuff, i would kill to be as skilled as you :)
Hi! Maybe I'm not the greatest fan of music (or entertainment for that matter) but I really liked how dedicated you are to your work and I'd love to watch videos with such efforts but maybe in other categories. Wish you the best, from Iraq!
Thanks for you work !! I do not know read music... it may be help a "bouncing ball" when play music.. Thanks a LOT !!! (it is awesome) Grazie dall'Italia !!
Hi Dave! I love your videos, and especially loved how you broke down your process here. I just recently started doing videos in a similar style (though using my own piano arrangements instead of the original score from the film). I put up my first video today, and it got blocked on copyright grounds. I was wondering if you have any words of advice on that topic. Do you dispute your videos on fair use grounds? Or does the copyright issue not come up because of how you've put them together?
Usually, my videos aren't blocked outright; rather, they're simply monetized by the copyright holder. Occasionally, though, the video is completely blocked and unviewable. In this case, I almost always dispute the claim citing fair use. Most of the time, either the claim is released or the video is unblocked but still monetized by the copyright holder. But there have been a few instances where the claim was upheld. I could appeal the dispute, but there's not much sense in doing that since it goes right back to the copyright holder and I risk getting a copyright strike. In these cases, there's not much I can do. So, in your case, I would first look at specifically what got blocked. If you used a video clip, was that blocked? Or was the music blocked? (Historically, the video clips, for me, are more likely to be unblocked). Then, I would also look at how long the video is. For whatever reason, the Content ID system seems to block videos more than 5 minutes long more often than ones that are less than 5 minutes. In this case, I would see if splitting the video up into two parts helps (I've had to do this before with my Rocketeer video). If it's blocked and completely unviewable, I would go ahead and dispute it (citing fair use) and see what happens. Let me know how else I can help!
It's REALLY unfortunate that the General Grievous piece didn't have the beginning in it because that part's awesome. ( I think in your reduction you might have said you couldn't get something with it as a part of the score? ( or something like that. ) ) All thanks to you I can now transcribe the piece to piano and play it on that ( I may need two or three more hands. )
I must say I was VERY confused with the one on "Battle over "Coruscant" as the soundtrack that I listen to is quite different than the film score. Now that I have listened to a version on the Tube that is identical to the film I understand it quite a bit better.
Could you do a video on how you obtain scores? I’ve noticed a few of the scores you use aren’t available for purchase and some of my favorite scores aren’t available either.
Do you keep PDFs of the scores you've covered and thought about sharing them? As great as your videos are, it would be even more helpful to go through those reductions separately, due to the size and pace forced by the video format. Great work though!
If you’re referring to the glowing line that I’ve put in some of my recent analyses, Final Cut Pro has a “beam” generator that allows me to change the color and glow of the beam. To line it up with music, I put keyframes on important beats. Keyframes allow the image to interpolate between the set marks. Hope this helps! :)
Hey, Trevor. To tell you the truth, I'm not really sure. I've used MuseScore for all of these, and I've touched Sibelius only a few times in my life. Though from what I've seen, Sibelius has a way to do this in some capacity (FilmScoreAnalysis uses Sibelius), though I think the process is different. Here's a quick guide I found, maybe it's useful, maybe it's not, especially since it's more than 10 years old: www.scoringnotes.com/tutorials/creating-cut-away-or-scrapbook-scores-in-sibelius/
I’m wondering if you have ever taken a stab at Jerry Goldsmith’s amazing POLTERGEIST score? I’d love to hear you input. It’s themes are so delightful, any thoughts?
In the instruments tab I have 7 pianos. On the first 3, I selected staff 2, and then clicked "remove." On the last 3 piano lines, I selected staff 1, and then clicked "remove."
Is the video blurry when you go into full screen? Is it blurry when you export it? I'm seeing some blur when looking at the preview window, but when I go into full screen it looks fine. (Also, when you export from MuseScore, make sure the DPI is at least 300.)
There were a lot of illegal foreign sites that were made after Sheeto.com got taken down. And since I don’t recommend the use of illegal websites, I don’t want to say the names of those sites either. Thank you for understanding. :)
Surely you forgot to mention the difficult of transposing any transposing instruments from the full score. That can't be easy to do all the time and every time.
