How I Research Weather Before Going Fishing on Ocean & Bay

My number one question is how do I always know when the weather is good on the ocean and bay. You will see I have a small boat and the weather is generally pretty nice. I dont guess, I do research before planning a fishing trip and go only when the weather is good. I discuss both Swell and Wind in detail. I also tell you how I read the graphs and what websites I use. I show you how to find small craft advisories. Fishing is more fun when the weather is nice so plan ahead. Thanks for watching. Please comment below what websites you use and add any tips and tricks you have.
Please like and subscribe, Thanks Chris

Great video. One thing to add thats actually very important is the tides going in and out of the Golden Gate. The most ideal time to cross Point Bonita would be during slack tide since you won't have the opposing outgoing tide colliding with the incoming ocean swell. Point Bonita gets rough and dangerous when the large swells from the ocean meet an ebb tide leaving the bay. I've been outside the Golden Gate in relatively calm water but faced treacherous conditions the same day while crossing Bonita during an ebb. Tide charts will tell you the most ideal time to make the crossings during the day. Thanks
@caseyledford3662
@caseyledford3662 3 года назад
You can avoid this issue, usually, by hugging the marin coast side of the bridge on the way out, and following the sf side on the way in. No boat should be fighting the chop in the middle of the channel during the scenario you mentioned. I've seen some dumbasses almost lose their ass out there...
@caseyledford3662

The "cabbage patch" right there as you round bonita point can be treacherous at various times. Swing it wide out to sea, whichever way you're coming or going.

Casey Ledford it’s the potato patch not cabbage patch🤣🤣🤣 and they just gotta put their purse down and send it I see guys on the nicest boats scared to cross the bar meanwhile I’m in my dingy sending it over 9-10ft swell and 6-8ft wind waves swell bashing
@caseyledford3662
@caseyledford3662 3 года назад
@@OldManAndTheSea I've heard it both ways. This man in his videos I have heard call it the "cabbage patch" and that's why I say that here. And exactly, I hear from too many people at the dock that gave up on crossing. One thing you learn over the years is that the equipment is more than capable, you just have to knuckle down.

I always look for a southerly wind to kill the swell, that is, swell height will not be as high since the winds help "push down" the swell. I do prefer a slight breeze though. The slight chop keeps the bait higher in the water column. On flat days bait tends to go deeper to avoid the intense light.

Good looking out! I also use those sites and Windy...headed out the gate for the first time this year. I would love to hear some thoughts on the best route, tide etc. I've heard ebb is the worst and the north bar (potato patch) is ugly. I've used the bonita cut and it seems better than the main channel, but I'm open to better options. Thanks for the video and the channel...See ya on the river

A pretty cerebral account on not wasting your time on bad sea days. That's why you are a successful fisher. You go where and when seas are appropriate for fishing/catching.
@OldManAndTheSea

All the big fish bite when it’s ruff caught my 32# and over (10) 20+# salmon this season in 7-9ft swell and 6-7ft wind waves and small craft advisory on a 20ft grady white. Look at the charter boat fish counts you’ll see on days they limit out early it’s typically very tuff seas 🙌🏻 which I like because it’s wide open with pretty much only commercial boats and party boats. Limited out by myself in a small craft advisory in an hour a few weeks ago on my channel.

@@OldManAndTheSea I'll Have to agree very much with your bad weather/big fish theory. I was in Alaska for 38 years. My wife, daughter and I used to fly into Crosswind lake a remote fly in only lake near Glenallen to fish for Lake Trout. I flew game surveys with this pilot. He'd call when the ice went out in spring; "get up here it's time to go fishing"!! We'd troll along the shore and catch lots of 18-20 inchers. In each of 3 different years we hooked/caught 10-15 lbers when the lake turned black with waves and white caps. When we decided it was time to get off the lake we'd hook a big one. I believe the big ones sensed the low pressure, bad weather and want to feed.

I just picked up a 13 foot Sportcat. What's the max conditions I would be able to go out in?
@OldManAndTheSea
@OldManAndTheSea 3 года назад
Those sportcats are pretty sick! I seen some videos on bloody decks where they take them to Catalina with 2 spare 5 gallon tanks and smack yft and yellowtail and wsb. Depends on how comfy you are in ruffer conditions but I’ve seen 13ft whalers 15-20 miles out of the gate way out by the channel buoy salmon fishing on the right day you can I’d say 4-6ft swell max and not more then 2-4ft wind waves. Having a back up/secondary or even third bilge pump you can quick connect to a battery will save you from taking on to much water if it gets ruff! www.ndbc.noaa.gov/data/Forecasts/FZUS56.KMTR.html Check NOAA they have the most accurate up to the hour ocean conditions relayed from the buoy! www.ndbc.noaa.gov/data/Forecasts/FZUS56.KMTR.html

@caseyledford3662
@caseyledford3662 3 года назад
I have a 20ft kingfisher. The height and period of swell you mentioned in my opinion would be handled just fine with a 21ft boat. However I very much consider winds over 10 at that rate to be a little much for comfort. You aren't in any danger if you know what you're doing, but it won't necessarily be comfortable when running.
@caseyledford3662
@caseyledford3662 3 года назад
You just have to know your boat. Mine is a deep V hull and cuts very well, but the wind still throws water over the bow in rough chop from time to time.

@jaredromero1199 3 года назад
Alrighty thank you very much!
@OldManAndTheSea
@OldManAndTheSea 3 года назад
Depends on what 21ft boat you have, aluminum boats are typically not designed for strictly ocean use mainly rivers. If use something like a bay runner or offshore model aluminum it will ride better in ruff conditions and boats like whalers, Grady whites, glacier bays will perform better because they are strictly designed for the ocean to be used everyday ruff season or flat calm! I haven’t seen to many kingfishers deep offshore I’m sure they can handle it but not as well as something filed with foam! That’s impress I thought most of those kingfishers were mainly river boats. My buddy just got a brand new one and is scared to take it out the gate. They are really nice though.
@caseyledford3662
@caseyledford3662 3 года назад
@@OldManAndTheSea Deep V hulls, like on kingfishers and north river are designed to be run and to cut through rough water. In my opinion they handle rather well out there, they just slap pretty hard when you're running in chop (no foam like you say). Typically you'll see jet drive aluminum boats in the river, they're usually a shallower V design used to run up rapids and shallow water. Outboard or outdrive setups keep the power down in and out of swells. Good conversations..

Fantastic Chris, thank you very much. Hoping some PhD candidate’s dissertation will reduce the various steps needed to conclude when its safe on our popular NorCal waters. For example, build an app that will show a relatively accurate moving animation of how a boat will be effected by wind, wave, swell, and tides traveling from launch ramp to destination and back. Boaters could simply insert data into the app like size of boat, date and time of travel, launch location, and destination. Then click on “Show Trip” to get an immediate animated depiction of your boat traveling to and from proposed destination along with a narrative description of same. Some of us are old enough to remember how hard it was to record a TV show on our brand new VCR’s back in the day. Nowadays you can do it with two clicks or less on a remote. In this RU-vid video you’ve shown data from multiple sources can be consolidated to plan a safe outing. Just need that PhD expert to build that app so we can click on a few links to instantaneously watch how our boats will handle certain nautical situations. It can be done! Meanwhile, I’m going to use these great tools you’ve given us. Thanks again!

I use the rule of 20. In a 20 ft boat if u add the swell+wind and it equals 20 or less go. More than 20 stay home and golf. Great video👍🏽
@OldManAndTheSea
@OldManAndTheSea 3 года назад
You must be staying home everytime and playing golf a lot because the mean average swell is 7-8ft before small craft advisory and the wind is always 10-15knots on a good day and the mean average is 15-20knots. All this can be bypassed by checking the actual NOAA buoy info which is up to the hour directly offshore and has the most precise calculation. www.ndbc.noaa.gov/data/Forecasts/FZUS56.KMTR.html Point Reyes to Pigeon Point is out the gate, even tells you what the bar crossing is like up to the hour.
