PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!!
How I revived my dead cheap £8 vintage Invicta mechanical watch using a drop of lighter fluid.
CAUTION LIKELY TO DESTROY YOUR WATCH !!!
ITS A GAMBLE I TOOK ON MY VERY CHEAP BROKEN DOWN WATCH
I DON'T RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO THIS
Disclaimer!! AT YOUR OWN RISK !
IT WILL PROBABLY DAMAGE the movement !
DO NOT ATTEMPT on an expensive watch !!
AT YOUR OWN RISK on a VERY cheap NON working vintage watch that you DON'T mind if it breaks it or damages it BECAUSE IT PROBABLY WILL !!
It WILL PROBABLY cause DAMAGE to the watches movement and loosening of the jewels etc .
If you are DUMB ENOUGH LIKE ME to attempt this do it away from any naked flame or high heat. Take all necessary safety precautions whilst handling and using lighter fluid. Read the instructions on the tin.Do not attempt if you are a minor. Only attempt at entirely your own risk and you are an adult.
It was suggested to me to only use a very small drop of lighter fluid on the back plate DO NOT DRENCH the Watch.
DON'T BLAME ME if it destroys your watch which it probably will.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!
Many thanks to the viewer who gave me this interesting but very risky tip. Because of him I am passing it on to you guys.

Timex used to recommend ( in 1960's ) soaking the whole movement of a Marlin in lighter fluid...

What a nice little watch! And that is a neat little trick. The jewels in a watch are normally pressed fitted except for the ones on the pallet fork and one underneath the balance wheel. These are glued in place with shellac. A substance that resolves in alcohol and melts at a rather low temperature about 80-100 °C (176-212 °F). Overheating and melting of the shellac will most certainly kill the watch. This lighter fluid is petrol based, right? It will most likely not harm the movement, but the fumes could of course do harm to dial and hands and other things. Don't do this with alcohol. I use a kind of lighter fuel for cleaning watch part when I am servicing watches. The process of cleaning and servicing a watch movement involves removing old, dried-out oil and replacing it with new oil. You find a way to rehydrate the old oil. Cool!... But it's not a substitute for service. ;-)

Thank you for your knowledgeable comment. Very interesting about the shellac dissolving temperature. Yes I think it's petrol based. I would have to look at the tin to be certain or Google it. I wish I had the skills and tools to service the watches myself. Something I might endeavour to try in the future.

Jewels in any watch are either press fit or held in with a metal fitting not by glue jewels are there in the watch movement to provide a cushion of sorts so that its not metal on metal and hence why they require oil as a lubricant glue would have the opposite effect
@space99dude
@space99dude 7 месяцев назад
@@bengaku that's interesting I thought some were glued in place people were warning that the lighter fluid may melt the glue and loose the jewels. Thanks for the info. Great to learn all this stuff.

@@space99dude yeah my bad only in pallet forks and it's apparently only the swiss watch companies that still use shellac so no idea what Chinese or Japanese watch makers use

I was talkin to a guy about his fence missing a lower board. I been lookin at it for long time. He didnt fix it when he relocated a piece from adjacent section that had bushes grown through it. It was unable to fit without a trim. Couple years later i walked accross the street with my tape and a handsaw. 2 minutes

I take it this popped up as i watch guys repair or service watches .dont do this to any mechanical watch and also dont put your fingers on the movement oil and dirt from your skin will cause the watch to stop if you dont know what you are doing best to leave it .and if you are not bothered about the watch sell it cheap and let someone else service it and enjoy it .rather than take space cadets advice and screw it up long term

Good advice. A viewer gave me the lighter fluid tip. As my watch was non running and very low value ( not worth getting it serviced professionally cost wise) I gave it shot. It's not a long term solution and mine is already stopping again after a while. So I think the magic may be wearing off. But it's nice to see it going. I'm probably just going to hold hold on to the Invicta because I wanted a vintage one for my collection as I have two modern Invicta's. I don't advise anyone to do this to any watch of any value because of the risks involved to the watch.Thanks for watching and commenting.

I have a few vintage watches bought off a popular online auction site and if you check there you will find listings for servicing watches for £50 I have sent off a couple of nice watches got them back fully serviced for and keeping great time for the £50 and the Invicta you have in video has a really nice bullseye dial probably from 1950's and worth saving

@@bengaku I just had a look and found the listing for the guy who services watches for £50 looks like a great deal. Obviously it's more if he needs to replace any parts although he does include a new crystal if that is needed. I know there are some older retired guys who service watches for almost nothing. I have a friend whose brothers breitling has just been serviced for £30 but the guy had it for months and he had to chase him up to get it back. Also this guy doesn't live in my area . Nice to know that there are people out there doing this for a reasonable price. I'm not sure I want to drop £50 on the Invicta as I probably won't wear it again anyway. Plus after the costs of purchase and service it would still only be worth around £60 . I might sell it on in the future for spares or repairs. Someone who can service it themselves will then end up with a nice watch that has value over what they would have paid for it.

no it desove the oil and its running dry now ... and the oil spreads everywhere when the lighter fluid desolves ???

Could be interesting for Swatch, right ElderPinto? Since there's almost no other option on the welded Swatches. A tiny drop of lighter fluid in the stem, some heat, and maybe a demagnetizer to drive the motor aggressively! 😂

Thanks for a really helpful video I've watched a few of your videos and have brought a couple of vintage watches not working for a bit of fun. Will be interesting to see if I have the same luck and for £20 for the two I won't be heartbroken if not. Keep up the good videos 👍
@space99dude
@space99dude 7 месяцев назад
Good luck. I only used the equivalent to a small droplet and don't overheat because that will probably dissolve the glue holding the jewels. Definitely a risky process that may also damage the movement itself. I wouldn't try on anything of any value.
@logun1970
@logun1970 7 месяцев назад
very interesting process here. I just wonder if the lighter fluid will cause the viscosity of the oil in the jewels to degrade as lighter fluid can be used to clean/remove oil and grease. As another commenter stated, probably best to take it in for service as to not cause damage on a vintage piece. Love the looks of the watch! Very cool! Hopefully if you do get it serviced they'll clean the watch as a whole also and it'll be a real stunner for sure!

I think time will tell, see how long the watch carries on working.. it's still going today. Its gaining 3 or 4 minutes in 24 hrs. It's a nice watch but I wouldn't pay to have it serviced as probably not financially viable for the value of the watch. I definitely wouldn't try this on any watch of value. Thank you for your comment and watching the video.

Bring it to service, don't risk out doing that, it runs but doesn't mean that it keep time correctly.
@space99dude

Good idea but this watch is only £8 not really worth spending money on a service as would cost more than the watch would be worth. As I mentioned I would only do this to a virtually valueless cheap watch. Happy to report its still running today and keeping fairly good time it's running about three mins fast in 24 hr. Thanks for watching and commenting on the video.

It's a lovely little watch, I've given it a good clean up and polish. It's looking like a little stunner. I was going to take the strap off but I've rejuvenated it with some moisturiser and it looks great now. Having solid lug bars that would have limited my watch strap options anyway. I have a couple new ones and they use the Seiko nh35. They're excellent and start running as soon as I pick them up. I also have one with a Swiss selita. I find the watches you all like boring and uninspired. there's a reason the new Invicta is doing so well financially. If you want a boring new Invicta you can just buy a Glycine. I have one of those. It's a pilot GMT that can monitor 3 time zones.

@@orangeyellow-me1pz I also have a couple of the newer ones. I have a beautiful quartz speedway and a nh35 automatic pro driver. Videos of both of them on my channel. Great watches. Some of the more larger flashy designs aren't to my taste but I like the Rolex homage watches they do. Great value and good quality.

I have just received a small flexi tripod that should help for future videos. Probably need to get one of those led halo lights as well . Thanks for watching hope your headache is better now.
