What do I consider when roasting a coffee on the Aillio Bullet? How do I design a roasting profile? Which settings do I use on the Aillio Bullet to roast a robusta for an espresso?
This and more will be covered in this video, where I take you live through a roast, I did this week.

▬ About the Aillio Bullet Roaster ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The Bullet R1 V2 is a state-of-the-art, powerful yet compact 1kg capacity coffee roaster.
Unlike conventional electric roasters, the Bullet R1 V2 uses the principle of induction to heat the drum directly. The induction heating allows very fast and precise adjustments in the heating power as well as an efficient heat transfer for a fast and energy-efficient roasting of up to 1kg of coffee.
Another innovation is the infrared sensor with which the Bullet R1 V2 measures the bean temperature without contact. This fast and precise roasting supports the development and execution of very accurate roasting profiles or roasts.
With the Bullet, the heat transfer as well as the airflow and the drum speed can be easily and finely adjusted.
The roaster can be operated with Artisan as well as with the very user-friendly RoasTime software specifically developed by Aillio and allows easy exchange of roasting profiles with other users.
You can find out more about the roaster here: roastrebels.co...
Respectively, if you come from Switzerland here: roastrebels.ch...

Great video. I have a bullet for over a year now and using only recipes but thanks for sharing great advice and tips how to tweak and enhance roast profile over time. I like the f9 tip at the end.

Thanks for sharing the roast detail. Great job on video. I am just now getting comfortable enough with my bullet to start using recipes. Im going to try a couple of your methods in my next roast and see what happens.

Thanks for your feedback. Sure, just give it a try and in best case find a consistent cupping setup to evaluate the roasts afterwards.

Hello Thanks for the beneficial video. I would like to ask, how do we decide the 1st crack timing? I got a bit confused. It would be great if you can help me to understand this point. Regards, Mohd Rafeea

Muito obrigado pela aula. Sou brasileiro, torro cafés de forma caseira. Utilizo uma pequena máquina chinesa Cafemasy, ar quente.

Nice video. I've been roasting with the Bullet for a few years now. It seems like you mostly commented on this near the end, but your temp of 213 is probably more like City+ (also based on the color you showed after the roast was done). I've noticed that fan speed really has a drastic effect on heat with the Bullet. Sucking out that much heat near the end caused your temp to flatline, which could be resulting a little in baked flavors. Even the F6 around first crack when you first outlined your recipe made me worry that it would precipitate a crash along with the usual FC reaction but that didn't seem to happen on your curve. Anyway, I'd love to see more videos like this with the Bullet to roast a variety of different beans (varietals, processes, etc) and we can all discuss the approaches.

It's depending on the beans. Correlations on bean development and colour are quite different in my experience if you are roasting Robustas vs. Arabicas. Also this bean tends to become more exothermic around FC, therefore I take a bit energy out of the system with the airflow around FC. On the tweak with F9 at the end, it's important, that you only do this for a couple of seconds. Like that, there is no risk of baking.

Great video, thank you for sharing this. I love the portable vent you are using, can you share the model? I will roast outside when possible, but too cold in the winter. Wondering if a portable vent as you show would be my solution.

It's called AirMex and it's made for soldering.

@@CoffeeRoastingI was going to ask the same question. It seems that the venting of the Bullet is the one sore spot of the roaster with no real prepackaged solution, everyone is left to figure it out themselves. It would be nice if Aillio offered at least one solution, like the Airmex that is designed for the Bullet.

Thank you for the video and the recipe. How would you adjust this recipe to stop the roast at a "City Roast" or "City Roast +" level? I am roasting a single origin robusta from India.
@CoffeeRoasting

When I roast lighter, I usually go a bit lower in heat around FC and when I go darker, I usually go a bit higher in heat around FC. But not too much in order to still avoid baking or burning the beans.

Question on the roast. To allow for ideal development, the roast should be be allowed to develop approx 20%. My question is if development time starts at first crack, how do I produce a darker roast and still stay close to 20%? Seems a darker roast (City would allow for too much development time.
@CoffeeRoasting
@CoffeeRoasting 6 месяцев назад
There are different approaches to roasting, but mine indeed is a bit similar to yours - I target a DTR or around 20% (can be 16% in a light roast or 24% in a dark roast). therefore I adapt the setting of the burner around first crack. To roast a bit darker, I keep it a bit higher. To roast lighter, I keep it a bit lower. Like that I can manage the development phase.
@hopetolboe5784
@hopetolboe5784 6 месяцев назад
@@CoffeeRoasting Got it, when going for a darker roast, increase the burner to reach a higher temp more quickly in order to still keep the DTR on or around the 20-24%. I was a bit hesitant as I didn't want to burn or bake the beans or increase the ROR too quickly. Your videos have been an excellent resource, thank you so much, I've learned so much. I recently purchased the Bullet and your videos have been a life saver while learning Roasttime and understanding the machine settings.

Interesting about going to F9 around 1C before drop temp. Do you usually do this on diff beans? I’m also having problems with chaff. I usually only go up to F5 max. I’m just got the bullet and I’m loving it.
@CoffeeRoasting
@CoffeeRoasting 8 месяцев назад
Not always, but with naturals, there are dramatically more chaffs that with washed coffees. Just to mention, that it's also always important to keep the chaff filter clean as well. That might sometimes also be the issue if chaffs stay in the roasting chamber.
