How I studied languages in 2022 (+ 2023 goals) 

The fact that you learn languages to be able to read and listen rather than speak with natives resonated with me!! It’s something I relate to and never found on other RU-vid channels

Ahaha I love it that you also don’t learn languages primarily to speak to people, every time someone in the language learning community says something about how “we’re all doing this to speak to native speakers” I’m like 👀 I’m from the US and I’m learning primarily Spanish, just started French recently, and doing a bit of dabbling on the side 😬

Oh my goodness, finally an introverted language youtuber, subscribed instantly :D. I feel like all youtubers learn only to communicate. Truth is the only languages I need for speaking purposes is French, English and Polish. I am half French half Polish, but I grew up in France so my Polish is not to a native level (probably B2). Now I live in Poland so I need to get it to 'perfection'. All the other languages I learn it's only for the fun of it and to consume content. This year I want to get my Spanish to a B2 level and start Japanese. I want to learn Russian too and re-start Italian too, but I keep that for next year. PS: A great resource for Polish is called Polak Potrafi (Fundacja Reja) they're PDFs each dedicated to a famous Polish person, I think you could like it! Pozdrawiam :)

She has, however, found American culture's propensity for small talk difficult to navigate, especially as she's socially anxious. In Spanish, her aim was to read 12 books, but she completed nine. She uses the Libby app to access Spanish audiobooks from local libraries. Despite living in a state with many Spanish speakers, she doesn't frequently take the opportunity to practice her Spanish conversationally, as she derives more joy from reading or watching content in a language rather than speaking it. Tanya also had a difficult time with Italian. Initially, she found studying Italian from beginner textbooks tedious because of her existing Spanish skills. She decided to abandon textbooks and began watching Netflix shows with Italian subtitles, without translation. She was surprised at her comprehension and later found an app called Close Master, which she says greatly improved her understanding. As for Japanese, Tanya spent a significant amount of time learning the language but felt disappointed because she didn't feel she'd made significant progress. She also linked her Japanese studies to a challenging time in her life, emotionally, which has led her to pause her Japanese studies for now. In Korean, a language she's been studying on and off for about ten years, she struggles to find enjoyable content since she's not interested in Korean dramas or K-pop. Her goal is to be able to read books in Korean. She has bought several Korean books and aims to read at least one in the coming year. In conclusion, Tanya uses language learning as a form of therapy, and she sees reading in a foreign language as a significant achievement and source of joy. Despite some setbacks, she remains committed to her language learning journey.

I also used language learning as a form of therapy in 2021. Best decision ever, it led me to learn my first foreign language.

Great video, Tanya! As someone who also primarily learns languages for consuming content, I'm happy to have stumbled on your channel (and I'm already loving the quality of your content!) I'm from Brazil, and I speak Portuguese and English fluently. I'm currently focusing on Spanish (mainly for work) and Korean, and I've picked my French back up after over a 7 year break haha. My priority is reading on those three languages, and especially Korean, since I find it quite challenging. I would love to watch a video on the media you've been using it you feel like making it!

I love your notion projects! I will steal this idea :) I guess when it comes to me, I learn one new language at a time. When I start to do it seriously, I usually notice that I want to start another one or continue one that I know very little :D when I was living in Austria and I was learning German, I suddenly felt that I want to continue my Spanish. Even the two languages are completely different, when I did not remember a German word, for example while buying something in the store, a Spanish one was popping out ;) Thank you for the video and sharing your way!

What you said about learning languages to consume content in it, not to talk with people, resonated so much with me!! So much language learning advice out there seems focused on getting people to speak, so am very happy to have found your channel. In the last year or so, I've achieved mastery in one of the languages I've been studying - Old English - to the point where I can pick up basically any text in the language and read it without having to look up any words (maybe one word per 100 lines of poetry, or the names for specific plants for instance). And experiencing that ease, of being able to just read anything comfortably, has really inspired me to strive for achieving that level in other languages in which I've already reached what I call 'Netflix level' in (when you can watch movies in that language on Netflix, so long as there are target language subtitles, and understand at least 75% of the lines). I want to graduate from Netflix level to novel level (where one can read novels in the target language and not have to look up more than a couple of words per page).

wow how are you able to manage your time so well to the point where you can learn several languages???? I’ve been trying to study korean intensely (because I’m planning to move to korea on the Government scholarship) and it has been 2 years of stress 😅. I have fun talking to natives and casually watching videos casually but trying to actually improve is hard.

Hi Tanya! Loved the video and looking forward to more content from you. I especially appreciated how you spoke about language learning being a form of therapy. I think I do that too sometimes. I'm currently studying Spanish and Korean and because I've been trying to reach a higher level in both for two years now, I haven't really allowed myself to start any other languages, though I have dabbled in German and want to pick up Mandarin Chinese and Japanese at some point (not to mention Turkish, Thai, and French, etc. etc.). Like you, my main goal of learning a language is to consume media in that language, especially books. I recently spent some time in Poland too and was fascinated but intimidated by the language as it is very different from any of the languages I speak (Swedish, English, Spanish, and Korean). Again, thanks for the video and good luck with your learning in 2023!

I studied Mandarin Chinese for three years in college, then studied French on my own last year, and now I'm learning Spanish! My goal is to get to a C1 level in Spanish one day because I live in Florida where a ton of people speak Spanish and I want to be able to use it in work situations. I'm from Peru. I'm learning Italian, Portuguese and German. Well beginning to, I really want to better my skills w those languages this year!! Some of my goals are(for now) to consume anything in Italian and understand it at least at a 60% at the end of the year. Also to watch more portuguese vlogs. For German I don't have any goals yet since It's a language that I recently began to want to learn.

I’m a native English and I speak Spanish, which is a heritage language for me. I’m starting Portuguese, which I want to learn through Spanish. I’m also interested in Yoruba and Korean. Thank you for mentioning language-learning as therapy-I feel that! I’ve really been enjoying reading and watching tv and videos in Spanish, while taking a break from the anxiety-provoking demands of speaking.

Great to listen to you in English now! What worked for me learning a language similar to the one I already know (in my case I learn portuguese after spanish): Watching a TV show just like you did and reading stuff. Then you translate things that you don't understand. Including grammar - why the sentence is built like that, why the word is in this form? It's basically intensive reading/ listening. And it works FAST

I discovered your channel yesterday and now I am trying to watch all of your videos to catch up :) My name is Irina. I am initially from Belarus, so my native language is Russian. But 5 years ago I moved to Poland to study and work here. I studied English and German languages at the uni, so obviously I speak those. Now I speak 4 languages in total and am learning Korean. I don't know how much tims it will get me to become fluent, but after Korean I am thinking of learning Chinese and later we'll see :) Foreign languages have been my passion since I was 5 years old, when my grandmother gave me a book for kids to study English and I just did it on my own for fun even before I went to school. And that's how it is to this day - languages are my favorite hobby :)

Your channel has helped me so much! The idea of needing to study every language all the time and be fluent in everything was so scary to me. I also have social anxiety and find myself tripping up trying to talk to native speakers. Why bother a Russian when i just want to read the classics, or get perfect polish pronunciation when i just love the music? Your approach to language feels so much healthier to me thank you for sharing

I feel like while I have people to talk to in some of my languages, my primary motivation on a daily basis is consuming content in those languages, so I relate to that. In 2022 I studied Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish and the tiniest bit of Shanghainese. I finished my first book in Japanese, started my first book in Mandarin, picked up Spanish again for the first time in 8 years, and just learned the most bare bones basics of Shanghainese phonology and grammar. My goals for 2023 are to focus more on listening to Japanese and Mandarin, since my reading level has far surpassed my listening level, particularly in Mandarin, since I can lean a bit on my Japanese knowledge while reading, but that's not really possible when listening. For Spanish, I'd like to read a few books and expand my vocabulary a bit more. Shanghainese will remain on a slow burn. If I really want to learn it well one day, it's going to have to wait until after my Mandarin is at a high level, since most resources for it are in Mandarin. One of the trickier aspects of Shanghainese is that there's no standardized writing system for it, and there's not a lot of written Shanghainese available, so it's going to depend on a lot of listening.

The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! I'm glad someone finally said that you don't need to speak every language that you learn. I'm a native English speaker (American), and I do speak Spanish and Portuguese -and speak them conversationally-but I want to learn (and only learn to READ) French and Hindi. I started with French but got super bored because of the similarities, just like you said. We'll see how it goes. I can't wait to follow your journey!

As a Lebanese , I think learning Arabic "fosha" is a good start it is the "proper" arabic. it is not used often but it is a good place to start since other dialects can be challenging to understand as a foreigner. (even me who fluently speaks Arabic doesn't understand other dialects sometimes). Good luck on your learning journey !

I'm from Brazil. Probably between C1-C2 in English and studying Spanish, A1. I'm going to study Japanese or Chinese in the future, but I want to at least get around B2 in Spanish (which won't take so much time - my native language is Portuguese, after all). Nice video!

The part about Polish made me smile 'cause most of the time I hear people saying it's quite scary and difficult ^^"" I'm ofc from Poland and English is the first foreign language I've learnt (but I don't use it actively very often so... sorry for any mistakes). Then I had my love story with German and this year I want to come back. I've tried also Spanish and Italian but let's say I know nothing, maybe I'll start again in the future. However, my biggest biggest love is - Japanese. It is my main target language but at the same time - I don't rush, I taste the moment of learning and embrace it. Every little grammar point gives me some joy XD Am I crazy already? Whatever, I wish all of you have fun with your languages and other hobbies!!

I hear you about putting all that effort into Japanese and not having much to show for it... I still felt that way after 4 years of college (Bachelor's degree) in Japanese! I felt SO disheartened, like, "four years of college study and I still can't read at an upper grade-school level (because of kanji) and can't have a conversation longer than 15 minutes. It CRUSHED me. 💔 ... It wasn't until I looked at comparative charts for "How long it takes a native English speaker to learn 'x' language" and -- I know that they're an estimate and not exact... but for example, French would take 600 hours to get to C1-C2... Japanese would take 600x6 hours -- literally 6 times the amount of studying for French-- in order to get to a comparable level! After that I felt much better about my Japanese progress.

I'm from Brazil and I started study English this year, your video be so helpful to my listening practice. I'm good in listening and reading, but terrible in writing and speaking too, I just feel like A1 when I tried writing and speaking, but I not give up.

I'm an immigrant who has been in the US over 25 years. While some may be just being polite, many other Americans are happy to lend a ear so you can share if you feel like sharing and if you are down many will sympathize or try to cheer you up. You are not required to share however and you shouldn't expect they will suddenly become your best friend just because they asked you about your day. But this is a great opportunity to to talk to someone who has no expectation and who you don't have to worry will form a lasting bad impression.

I am an American who was born to Nigerian parents and have grown up in an area that has a huge spanish speaking population. As a result, english is my native language but I have been studying spanish for years (i'm pretty fluent in it now) to communicate with others and have also been studying yoruba, the language of my Nigerian family, in order to better connect with my culture. My goal is to be trilingual.

Hi Tanya, as someone who has some fluency in a Levantine dialect of Arabic and is studying Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), I suggest you first learn MSA to a B2 level then begin to choose a dialect to learn to speak. It is much easier this way and MSA will allow you to modify your dialect to reach an understanding with speakers of other dialects.

My plan for 100 days of Spanish has been Wake up in the morning and do a couple lessons on Duolingo Do two pages out of a bilingual word search Watch a show or two on lingo pie mess around with the flash cards and the matching pairs Read either a short stories in Spanish or a bilingual children story Bible book Then at the end of the day look at the list of words did I didn't know and test myself on a jumbo flash card So far it's day 28 and I'm not giving up on this streak

Note for arabic: Start with dialect if you want to focus on speaking If you want to learn to read at some point, I would start with MSA then start a dialect (Egyptian is most popular, but pick what interests you most based on culture :))

Hi, thank you very much for this video, it inspired me to learn languages more actively! My main goal in 2023 is to imrove my English wich is on B1 level now. And also I gonna find a textbook for French I learn only with duolingo because I wanna make my self-studing more sirious... By the way I'm from Ukraine and my two native languages are Russian and Ukrainian I'd been learning Italian and Finish some years ago. I have a lot of languages mostly European in my "wish-list" so I hope I'll begin learning them somewhen Thank you🤍

I am impressed by your english and in general it was so great to watch this video!! I am from Germany and right now I want to learn english (my comprehension is really good, but every other aspects is not), french (I am living in France right now, but if I am honest this language is so hard for me and I am not the biggest fan of it - so its kinda exhausting for me) and the last language is Polish (my mum is from Poland and it´s by far my favorite language - And so I would looove to see a video about some ressources). But I also dabble a little bit in Ukrainian (my favorite band is from Ukraine and when I listen to their songs I want to learn it so much). When my polish level is higher I would probably learn it seriously.
