This is so excellent. I love your approach. I really believe if the majority of children and adults learned history this way our country would be a very different place in a much better way.
I do history similarly. I try to find primary sources when possible. Eyewitness to America is fantastic!! I hated history in school and deplored it in college. Learned to love history after college when I could finally get away from textbooks.
Great video as always. My wish list grows every time I watch one of your videos. History is an important subject for me because I need to learn american history myself so I can teach it to my kids, thanks for your recommendations.
Great video :) It seems SOTW is one of those resources that people love or hate. I was surprised you opened with it ;) but I understand why you like it, and I think that's really important to find books that are captivating. I used to own the entire set from workbooks to CDs, but now we only have the audio. We also have the encyclopedia and the History of US. I appreciate what you said about historical fiction. We learn so much that way. We had a nice assortment when we studied the middle ages. I think the kids and I retain more when it's in a story form. -Hana
Ha, I know, I understand where people are coming from when they hate on SotW, but I still think that it is the best coverage of world history you are likely to find for elementary level. It isn't perfect, but nothing is. I learn best when I'm invested, and well written historical fiction almost always leads to further study for me.
I really enjoyed how you explained the resources and how you worked with them, even if they had occasional problematic aspects. I think that I could use your timeline myself! I'm shocking at knowing where events fall in the context of time.
Thanks. :) I really love timelines - they are so useful. I've even been surprised sometimes at things that I didn't connect just looking over our timelines over the years.
I'm really enjoying this info and have to agree with you that history can tend to be a boring subjects for kids unless brought to life with lit. We enjoy reading historical selections to help bring the stories in the past to life. Thanks for your video!
You talked me into running to Amazon and buying the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia. LOL I've been wanting to add it to our homeschool for a while so I checked prices and it was just $7.42 on Amazon prime so I snatched it up. It arrives Friday. And I love Story of the World and History of US too.
I absolutely love your curriculum! My kids and I are really into history ❤️ I even reviewed your curriculum on my channel we’ve used it for the last three years❤️❤️
This was great, thanks for your advice on encouraging our children to apply critical thinking as well as researching what we are studying...great stuff
My historical fiction just arrived! Yay! I got Fever 1793 based on your recommendation. Can't wait to read aloud or just have the kids read it. I also got a lot more hehe. -Hana
We're just getting started with history (grade 1), but I plan to do it similarly. We are going to use Curiosity Chronicles instead of SOTW though. Projects are not our thing at this point. We do like to add videos also when possible.
Hi there. Really enjoyed your video. We use SOTW in our homeschool as well and our history study looks very similar to yours. I would love to hear more about the geography resources and maps you use to complement your study. Also, how much time do you spend on each topic and how do you pick which resources to use? There are many great resources out there and I find it difficult to choose just one or two. We try to cover a chapter a week in SOTW but I sometimes find we need more than a week to read all the great books we find. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! How much time we spend depends on interest level. We spent exactly one week last year on Mesopotamia, but nearly 6 months on Egypt because that's where the interest was. Especially at the early elementary level, I don't get too hung up on getting to the end of the book. I'm planning on doing another video sometime soon on how we study Geography, so you'll want to stay tuned for that. ;)
I have to reiterate how thankful I am to have stumbled across your channel. We've been testing out different ways to do history, but found that for the elementary stage we like SOTW the best. I just purchased A History of US for my middle schooler, but she's more interested in ancients and the middle ages. Do you have any good recommendations for middle schoolers looking to study more of that time period?
I have The Human Odyssey, which is a series of texts that K12 uses, I believe. You can sometimes find them reasonably priced used on amazon. The first book covers ancients through the middle ages and is very well done.
I was looking at getting A History of US for our history curriculum for next year. I haven't seen many reviews on it. Do you think it would be appropriate and work for early elementary students? (K through 3).
I think it would be a lot for that age level. History of US is better suited for upper elementary through middle grades I think. I think for that age, I would just get something like the Children's Encyclopedia of American History by DK and The American Story by Jennifer Armstrong and Roger Roth. There are tons of picture books and early reader type chapter books that you could use to fill it out into a full history program.
Are you Orthodox Christian? Just curious, I get that vibe. I don't mean that in any way bad, in fact more complimentary. I'm actually converting soon to Eastern Orthodoxy
@@ARRRGHSchooling Not sure what gave it off honestly. The Orthodox Christians practice a lot of their customs in a more tight-nit traditional way like the Jewish community. I wish I could answer that for you better! I really did get the vibe you were an Orthodox Christian though, interesting.
thank you i struggle as a secular homeschooler with history. i kept going back and forth with the story of the world and tapestry of grace. i really hate too much biblical reference but you said csll it mythology. i was talkinging with my x year old about how i view god the other day and how greek mythology influenced me. i new in third grade the metaphors and allegoies and to this day am frustrated how others cant see. thank you for reminding me i can tell my kids the same about the bible. lol the indoctrination was deep within me lol.
