Today I head to Dartmoor with my dog Miss Nancy the greyhound in the campervan. We explore Wistman’s Wood, an incredible ancient woodland full of twisted and moss covered trees, then go to beautiful Widecombe-in-the-Moor, experiencing an awful park up on the way! We are so happy to arrive in Dartmoor and have a peaceful nights sleep. It’s a very cold spell so we are struggling to keep warm but at least we have each other!
The guidebook I mention which is great for finding less well knows spots is called Wild Guide- Devon, Cornwall and South West: amzn.to/499hXD6

Sisters of mercy' is the title of one of the songs on the first Leonard Cohen LP from 1967. it's a beautiful LP and available to listen to for free on YT. Smothering someone with a pillow takes ages apparently and you've got them flailing about underneath you.

😂 ‘apparently’ , sounds like a hit too much effort to be honest! Probably just playing Leonard Cohen for long enough would do the trick!

That was realy nice :-) I moved to Cornwall 20 odd years ago and much to my disgrace I've never explored Dartmoor, thanks for showing me what I'm missing. I have an 8 year old jack Russel cross and some how he is also able to take up all of the bed and the sofa and most of the floor so I can't imagine how you find room to sleep around Miss Nancy.

Thanks! I’ve still got lots to explore in Cornwall too but Dartmoor is great. It’s amazing how much space they can take up, I’ve had quite a bit of practise last year sharing a camp bed with Miss Nancy 🙈 so the van bed feels big!

So many things to love about this video. * Nancy eating breakfast in bed * her keen little butt jogging up the hill * the magical woodland * Nancy trying to steal your chips * pig in the water * sleeping pig * sulking pig who wants to go back to auntie (me!) Next time please include any footage of you falling over 🤣

I've always wanted to travel dartmoor in a van, what's some things you wish you knew before you started? How do you usually manage washing, laundry, waste management, equipment breakdowns, etc.? Good luck and have fun on your travels!
@missnancysdayoff
@missnancysdayoff Год назад
Hey! Well my heater seems to be usually broken, but even when it isn’t, I don’t think winter in van in the UK is very pleasant 😂 the diesel heater exhaust is super noisy so I often feel to embarrassed to have it on even if I’ve fixed it. I’m so glad it’s spring now!! I think I underestimated how much all those little things you mentioned become big things, it’s really made me appreciate the conveniences of a house. I often visit friends and family so I use their washing machines haha or at a campsite, then I have to have things dangling over the van drying super not ideal, and in winter nothing wants to dry even a wet coat😅
@kiranclarke869
@kiranclarke869 Год назад
@@missnancysdayoff Thanks for the insight! I imagine I'd have to become one with the weather to manage the winter, maybe I'm better off finding somewhere near a sauna and laundrette for winter parking and only touring the moors in the summer! How much (ballpark estimate if necessary) do you generally spend per year on things like fuel and parking?
@missnancysdayoff
@missnancysdayoff Год назад
@@kiranclarke869 I’ve definitely become much more at one with the weather! And I put on fleece trousers and jumper over my other clothes this winter, I hardly used the heater because it was broken all the time so it didn’t cost that much. I just felt like it was being able to cope with the weather but not exactly enjoying it. When we had really cold weather the whole van froze up for weeks (I wasn’t sleeping in it then.) I think it’s all doable it’s a case of what your willing to put up with! I like finding quiet farm campsites for say £10 so we can chill and have a wine when can afford. I’ve only been in the van since last December though so I’m prob the wrong person to ask for good estimates! I think it just depends on you though, some people seem to wild camp all the time and you could only park in free day places, I like to mix it up at campsites and car parks so for sure that can add up! 🙂

@@missnancysdayoff Sounds like good insulation, blankets and clothes are a must-have (unless I can earn the cash to migrate to spain each year 😂). I have a friend living in a van in Somerset but I don't think they get it quite as cold up there. Hopefully the camping rights won't get further restricted in the future! Thanks so much for your help, it's very useful information for me to bear in mind for the future.

I’ve been thinking winter in Europe is the answer 😂 I’m definitely no expert, still trying to figure things out as I go! Yeah it sometimes feels like the whole country is a no parking sign. I hope it goes well for you anyway if you give it a crack!

I had a greyhound, they definitely love sleeping in strange positions in your bed. Getting another retired greyhound next year, will have a black bitch as I know black dogs are harder to rehire. Nancy is gorgeous! My granddaughter Lottie has chosen the name Olive for our new dog. Our other greyhound was called Scats when we got her, she soon got used to being called Jesse. 💖🐾🐾

Dartmoor looks lovely, I've never visited there before. Have you visited my home county of North Yorkshire, lots of great places to explore there. How you finding the Vanlife experience? I keep thinking about it, maybe one day, when my daughter has flown the nest. Single Dad life 🤣

@missnancysdayoff Год назад
I haven’t, I’d love to go to Yorkshire! Dartmoor is one of my favourite places, I love moorland so I’d love to visit the North Yorkshire moors also. I have a love hate relationship with the vanlife 🤣 it’s hard work, but also kind of great. Sadly Miss Nancy really hates driving in the van so it’s awkward. You could get a weekend van and take her out that would be brilliant! It’s much better than a 🏕️
@stu.555
@stu.555 Год назад
@@missnancysdayoff Yeah a day van would be nice, but they are so expensive. Maybe an old Mazda Bongo van might be do-able. Or maybe a cheaper small van to convert. I'd like a big Mercedes Sprinter eventually for full-time vanlife. Shame your pooch not like riding in the Van. I have a little Staffie he seems OK in the car, although his longest journey was only to Manchester. He's only 14 months old. Tiny terror but I love him to bits. He's a good boy really 🐾 Definitely visit North Yorkshire moors and surrounding areas you will love. Go to Whitby also my favourite seaside town.
@missnancysdayoff
@missnancysdayoff Год назад
Definitely aren’t cheap, converting and old can was the only option for me. I’ve seen people do amazing things with cars too, I’d to a mini conversion in my car if I didn’t have the van! Sprinter is a classic, boxer nice and wide though 👌 Your dog sounds sweet, some seem to love cars! Nancy is better in the car but it’s not her favourite activity. Thanks you I will definitely visit Whitby if we come up! I need to plan something

@@missnancysdayoff Lots of history in Whitby, what with Captain Cook and its also where Bram Stoker wrote the Dracula novel. Pickering is a nice town also, you can jump on the steam train from there to Whitby. Have you ever been to York City? That's a must see also.

@@stu.555 that’s interesting, I haven’t read Dracula I could do it while visiting! I have hardly seen any of the UK up north really, it looks so beautiful but far. I’ve not been to York but I have heard it’s beautiful. Is it van friendly up there?

Hello! Fellow vegan with black rescue greyhound who travels in the motorhome whenever possible! Nice to meet you! Our channel Escape in the Motorhome features Sammy. He's 4 years old and I would love to have him off-lead but am scared. How did you first approach it?
@missnancysdayoff
@missnancysdayoff Год назад
Hey Bryony nice to meet you! I’d love to see Sammy I’ll check out your channel 😊 I was really scared about letting her off too (still am really!) I started by doing it really gradually in the woods I used to live by where I knew it all really well, and felt like it was relatively safe and far from roads etc. Then I just let her off for a few mins to see how she would be, I’d been doing recall training around the house so I made sure I had a ton of treats and practiced calling her over. I was so scared she’d run off 😂 then basically we just built it up from there with longer times off lead and in more places as I got to know how she would be and practiced the recall. Luckily she isn’t a dog that wants to run off, so now it’s more about me always being very alert to our surroundings and always put her lead back on if I see any animal or other danger 🫶
@teejayhaych149
@teejayhaych149 Год назад
My grey comes when he is called but because he is a sighthound, if a bunny or small critter ran past i know he would be gone in a flash because thats his instinct, so i never let him off lead. Some greys have good recall but for many, the lure of chasing a fast moving little critter is too hard to resist
@missnancysdayoff
@missnancysdayoff Год назад
I’m sure miss Nancy would chase something too and it’s hard to call any dog off once it’s on the chase! We’ve just done really well with not seeing too many animals, I try to be super vigilant 😂 and definitely put her lead on if we see animals 👌

@missnancysdayoff
@missnancysdayoff 7 месяцев назад
Well she is six now, on a usual day she walks anything from 30 mins if things went wrong to a 1.5 hrs. She goes on 2-3 hr walks no problem, probably wouldn’t everyday though! Ive never really gone further than that. She’s also very lazy if there are days without long walks. Ive had her 3.5 years, she really is a game girl and has got a lot of confidence! I think she would be great for most people, maybe not if you intend to run up and down mountains everyday 😊

(She might not spot this one, it is 5 months old after all.) I heard something quite disturbing recently, that young women choosing not to have children are turning their maternal affections to pets or 'underdogs' such as so called asylum seekers or refugees. Well I'm an underdog of epic proportions and no 'sister of mercy' has ever come to help me. If I can't pay they stay the hell away. (I think I've got away with it this time.)

I thought a sister of mercy was more someone who would smother you with a pillow 😂 I reckon adopting a dog is much better than having a child!
