How I Treat Whiteflies In The Garden - What I Use, and How Often

Sometimes Whiteflies can show up in such large numbers that it can seem like a plague. In this video, I'll show you what I use to control Whiteflies, and tell you how often I use it. I will also show how to easily spot them and tell you the time that I prefer to spray them.
We don't normally have much of a problem with Whiteflies, but occasionally in late summer or early fall, we do get an occasional outbreak of them.
As always, fully read the label when using any insecticide.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Our family recently moved from Maryland to Forida. Boy there are a lot of different trials and tribulations here. Lots to learn. I was gifted a hibiscus for Mother's Day. Started to notice the leaves turning yellow, and dropping. Went to water and noticed flying white flys. Turned over the leaves and spotted white eggs on half of the plant. Been using soapy water w/ vinegar. Spraying over and under the last two days twice a day. Morning and evening. Tonight took rubbing alcohol and wipped the leaves. Removed dead leaves. Going to trim some branches. Next step is trying your method. Best wishes, and happy gardening.

Hi Jim, i'm still learning but I think I can share a thing or two after battling white flies the 3rd year now. My first year started like your video but it turned into a disaster by the end of Sept because I had no idea what those are. They're so nasty, they multiplies fast, they carries disease and spread them everywhere. We're in northern CA, winter is warm enough for my tomatoes, pepper, and whiteflies to survive. During late summer, our city is usually so badly infested, you'll see whiteflies literally everywhere. I realized in such place there's no way I can make them extinct, but I've found a few ways to keep my plants going and not driving myself crazy. 1. mulch. I mulch every plant rigorously 2. soil. I changed all my container soil to foxfarm Ocean Forest, I gave up using those cheap ones or mixing manures with cheap potting mix, adding a bunch of stuff in there. (I think the money is well worth it, at least we have cherry tomatoes and jalapeno to eat all the way till Dec). That'll also save me money on fertilizers, I don't need to use any water soluble ones, and I only use little bit of slow release organic fertilizer every few months, and I would always bury those under mulch. 3. Grow more flowers year round. Grow companion plants. They'll attract pollinators and good insects. I also grow garlic, green onions, herbs all over. 4. I have to spray regularly whenever I see signs of them coming back (usually finding clusters of eggs hiding underneath the leaves), I spray with neem oil, peppermint oil and castile soap, mixed in water. I have a series of sprayer, and when things are out of control I would get an backpack electric sprayer go twice a week for 2-4 weeks (thankfully last year I only need to use the big sprayer twice). Spray underneath the leaves. 5. About yellow stick pads, I would avoid them. It could be a way to monitor the pests in your garden, but I don't think it's going to help at all. I used to go crazy about them, and they would attract and kill both good and bad insects. In my garden, I was left with only whiteflies after a few weeks, since nothing can out number them.

Supposedly Michigan zone 6A gets too cold for whiteflies to overwinter here, but we have them this year as bad as this video shows, if not worse. It has really been frustrating since our tomato plants in particular are mostly sickly and producing probably a 5th of what they would have if not for the major whitefy infestation. I will be following your advice as closely as possible as soon as I can purchase everything.

I have some three containers with yellow peppers in them that I've had for about nine or 10 months nursing them in and out of the sun in Florida when super hot I bring on a porch. I'm not sure if they're thrips or white flies but they're overwhelming the plants in a matter of week or two of neglect. I'm either going to follow your regimen or destroy the plans and hope they don't get into other things. I am in Orange citrus country in East Central Florida and I used to get white flies a lot in hibiscus and they would get into the citrus trees but I haven't seen that happen in 10 years maybe or in my garden plants either this is the first year in a long time. Thanks for your video clip

Hey James. Don't know how experienced you are with neem oil, but it has to be emulsified for it to work well. It solidifies when it gets below about 75 degrees or so. So it has to be mixed with warm water to work well. I would suck up white flies until the battery died. I finally cut off all the leaves on the sweet potato vines, advice from my local nursery. I put the leaves in a garbage bag (inside sprayed with non stick cooking spray) to keep the flying ones in the bag. I also had to spray my other crops. So when we put out our tomatoes in '22 we planted with worm castings then after some time and growing we dressed with more castings then once again after 2 or 3 more weeks. The whiteflies showed up about this time of year, late june , but didn't stay and had a wonderful whitefly free tomato patch!! We did about the same routine this year and again the flies appeared just a few days ago was out tonight and no signs of them when shaking the plants and found some of them on the underside of a leaf.. unresponsive , dead as a hammer!! G'day Jim, Thanks for this Video... I'd never seen these little White Flies before, but they pretty much wiped out my Zucchinis & Beans & Tomatos & Potatos this year. I found that they don't like Seasol Fertiliser (suitably diluted) poured on the Leaves, but they leave the Folaige with a white Fungus/Mould, and I found that amputating all the effected Leaves was the only way to stop the sickening Leaves from poisoning the rest of the Plant. Then I tried a 1.5% Solution of Hydrogen Peroxide sprayed on the Foliage, both sides..., and that seemed to hunt the Flies away and also kills the Fungus..., leaving the Leaves with dead brown patches on them where the Fungus has died. The Dwarf Beans actually appear to have recovered, growing new Leaves, Flowering, and producing a few late Summer Beans. I'll get a bigger Sprayer and try your Pyrethrum & Neem Oil. I sort of thought the White Flies seemed to appear after I applied chopped Sugar-Cane Mulch after my Seeds all came up. One of those "Pink & Red & White Silver-Beets/Swiss Chards" has flowered & gone to seed - but I dunno what if anything they'll grow...(?) ! My impression is that 55-Litre Tubs are too small in which to grow Vegetables, but the 90 to 110 Litre ones are fairly serviceable. Last week I posted a Garden Update featuring the major Carrot Harvest (6 in one day, to be given away to my mother, son & daughter - as against one at a time for my own consumption. 24 little Onions cost $36 to get set up to grow, and 2 dozen Carrots cost $55...; but the most expensive Produce has been 5 Cobs of Corn from 2 x 110 Litre Tubs of Soil, costing $110 - or $22 at per each (!). Hopefully, next year I'll have a better idea of what I'm trying to do...(?) ! Growing Food sure makes shopping in the Stupormarked into a humbling experience ; when regarding all the PERFECT Veggies which are being virtually given away almost for free (!). Such is Life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

I sure hate to hear that you have them there too. Here, they don't seem to bother our plants much until very late summer and early fall. Some years we almost don't notice them, and in a rare year like last year, they seem to explode into the thousands almost overnight. That white fungus on your leaves sounds like powdery mildew. We usually get that about the same time as the whiteflies show up....mostly on our vining crops, like squash and cucumbers. It's good that you are considering the cost of growing things. Some folks don't think of it at all. I am lucky that we have a well and the water costs whatever it cost to run the pump that pumps it out of the ground. I also save seeds from lots of what I grow. Sounds like you might get some swiss chard seeds soon. Over several generations, you can select seeds from the healthiest plants and create plants that are better suited for your particular growing area. I think that for me, the pleasure of growing things offsets the cost quite a bit :) I have a feeling that like me, you enjoyed the journey of growing things.

I am in the Philippines. I have a horrible time with them every year with egg masses like crazy. I use a bit of soap and oil in water with a sponge, wipe the undersides of the leaves as spraying is ineffective. I also use the yellow sticky traps for the bit of good they do for adults.

I've been having a white scale-like hopping insect infest green bean, tomato, and occasionally pepper stems the last couple of years, especially in hot humid weather. I also found big infestations on young native black cherry and redbud. Until I saw your video, I thought they were whiteflies; then I thought they might be mealybugs; now I'm guessing flatid planthoppers. In any case they are annoying and seem to slow the growth of plants or worse, and I'm still trying to figure out the most effective way to control them.
@MidwestGardener
@MidwestGardener 3 года назад
I hope you can get them under control. Insects can sure take the fun out of gardening. Two-marked treehoppers aren't white, but they egg plus are white and scaly looking. Not sure of their range though.
@davidniemi6553
@davidniemi6553 3 года назад
There are many thousands of specifes of planthoppers -- I've heard of "snowy", "mealy", and just plain "white", they all look similar and probably only an entomologist can tell them apart. They seem to afflict pole beans the worst. But we just had a heavy rain and it washed them all away for the moment. I'm quite fond of the beneficial insects, especially 6-spotted tiger beetle, which is a beautiful shiny green color and a great consumer of garden pests.

Are these sprays harmful to bees?
@MidwestGardener
@MidwestGardener 3 года назад
Pyrethrin is toxic to bees. It breaks down pretty quickly though. I wouldn't spray it on any plant that has a lot of honey bee activity. I see zero honey bees on our peppers and other plants that I sprayed. It could be a problem for our eggplants and tomatillos.

understand the life cycle of the whitefly and you almost have complete control. Spraying is good? but what is shown here is the whitefly being eliminated at the adult stage, it does nothing to destroy eggs or prevent hatching. So you will have the same problem. My solution is to spray every 4-5 days with a soap-based spray every 4-5days for 40 days within that period you will have stopped the life cycle. However, miss a spray session, then you will have to start the 40-day period again.

@@onLYbyM You can buy insecticidal liquid soap, and apply it as directed,, but i prefer to spay every four days with normal liquid soap, i.e washing up liquid teaspoon to 5 litres of warm water. I do this every 4 days for 40 days, that way you attack the whitefly at every stage of its life cycle. And do it regularly once a week thereafter, For my tomatoes in the greenhouse i use a teaspoon to 2litres of warm water and crush a clove of garlic in hot water until its almost minced then strain it into the sprayer, Whitefly do not like garlic aroma..Unless of course, they are French (joking)
