How I Try To Start A Long Dead Tractor And Fail Miserably

Another 'bow axle' B is being readied for sale, so today's video is all about using another tractor and flat belt to get a dead one running. This one has sat dormant in excess of a decade. If I ain't used in in ten, I'll not use it in twenty. So after grabbing the crank off an old Allis C and turning the motor over a dozen or so times I thought it best to do it the easy way.
A twist is needed in the flat belt that's powered by an old Massey Harris 30 to turn the pto of the little Allis the right direction to see if we have spark. Of course there is going to be oxidation on the contact points in the magneto...and of course there's going to be a good deal of nastiness inside the fuel tank thanks to our forward thinking oil and gas companies. But that's another story.
So we jump through all the normal hoops that USUALLY makes these little Allis's fire right up. Not today though, not today. I stop and drop the carb and give a rudimentary cleaning just to get gas into the cylinders. The previous day there was no problem, but today for some particular reason the gasoline goblins decided to heckle the unsuspecting balding little gray haired fat man and let the main jet's gummy surface restrict its motion. No fuel wanted to pass.
The day ends in disappointment with out the little guy showing even the first sign of life. No biggie, I advertised it as 'NON- RUNNING', so nothing is lost. I was just thinking it'd be a nice surprise for 'tire kickers' or prospective buyers alike to kind out it was actually a running tractor. I still can't believe it didn't start or even attempt to start ! )-:
So after I started the video I got a firm confirmation from a young man that wanted it ... So agreeable terms were made in no time and a date and time was made for the exchange. Money into MY pocket and a rusty hunk of non-running metal into HIS trailer.
We met, it was love at first sight...him and the tractor... !! Keep me outta THAT picture please. Loaded and smiling with his almost six year old son and a buddy that came along for the ride, they left out nearing dark. Now,, less than 12 hours later, I get a text from the young man....he said he had a little video for me to see and told me a little story to go with it. BOTH are at the near end of the video and no, I'm not going to tell you here !! LOL

Well, I got a few more to work on Dennis. I gotta get back onto the 188D engine rebuild from the 430 Case...then there's the 210D in the 4500 Ford backhoe then there's the Allis Speed Patrol engine swap...then the Farmall M grader motor swap or rebuild....the list goes on. Jeez...now I'm tired out from thinking about 'em. LOL Thank you for watching as much as you do. Priorities do have a tendency to change from day to day though.

Allis Chalmers is a nice little tractor. They will take a beating and keep on going. You did everything I would have done except I will spray some contact cleaner on the points just to be sure. In my early days of 1 1/2 hp cast iron Briggs & Stratton engines I would ride my bike up to Hill Piston and buy a set of points with my lawnmowing money and change them before I tried to get them running. I have had more points problems than I care to think about. My good friend Bob Collins has helped me out with tractors and trucks a bunch of times. Good thing he is patient. It took a dozen years before I could call myself reasonably successful at getting them started in the spring.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 11 месяцев назад
Yes I should have used electric contact cleaner to dissolve ALL the oxidation on and around the points. Points can be tricky to a young 'un, but once you get'em figured out they are a snap...as you found at a tender young age. Everyone needs a 'Bob Collins' in their life as a youngster.

Yes, it was quite the surprise when I got the message and short vid from the young man. I don't know if I had the old thing cocked and primed ready for the next turn of the crank or if the 2 1/2 hour ride across the state in the late evening hours bounced something loose to allow it to fire so easily !! LOL. No matter, we are both happy for the re-homing of the Little Old Allis. Thank you for the visit Martin...and dang it, I just GOTTA swing back by your channel and play a little ketchup !!

Yessir you are correct Bobby. But if I'd have just tried it one more time...if...if...if.... LOL. No matter, I sold it to him as a non runner anyway, so I am tickled to death that it fired so easily for him. But it also could have something to do with the nearly two hours bouncing around in the trailer that helped knock something loose too !! LOL

Oh I'm sure I would have gotten it going...I just ran out of time to fiddle with it. ALL of them can't be easy. But I should have just been a little more thorough inside the magneto. The two hour ride home knocked some more stuff loose I guess. LOL. He IS a happy young camper today though.

You worked very hard trying to get her to fire off!!! Great video and I like your approach to trouble shooting. I am glad it fired right up for the buyer. It was just being a bit stubborn with you that day. Good job! Fun video- your friend Rob on the Left coast lol

Thank you Rob....but if I'd have just tried one more time... LOL. That's the way it is. No matter though, I'd sold it as advertised as a 'non-running' tractor. I was wanting to surprise the prospective buyers with it running when they came to look at it. I just ran out of time because this young man was on his way. Thanks for taking the time for another video...I know you are a busy young man.

@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 11 месяцев назад
Hahahahaha....I thought so too. LOL. But the young man's little boy was excited too. Electric start is ALWAYS the way to go !! Of course that's only my opinion....LOL. This one not only had the flat belt drive an enterprising prior owner took a V-belt pully the exact diameter with the center hub knocked out and welded it to the flat one. So he had the option for either belt for a sickle bar or a belly mower with the V and flat belt for a buzz saw or hammermill.
@1lilfarm
@1lilfarm 11 месяцев назад
I have the mid-mount sickle bar for mine and it has the v-belt pulley mounted parallel to the axle. I think the flat pulley is around the farm somewhere but, I never saw it mounted. Dad had the JD "B" or the Farmall "H" if he needed to run a flatbelt (which he used for the corn sheller).@@tractorman4461

I talked to him later in the same day, and the more he plays with it and drives it around the more he's thinking of keeping the little B intact !! LOL. He's gotta weight the hydraulics that's already on the C for using the 5 foot finish mower. Of course with these little AC series tractors swapping the hydraulics TO the B is pretty simple.

For some reason I am not getting notified every time you post a new video. I should follow your logic that if I havent used it in ten years I wont use it in twenty.We have engines that havent been started in over thirty years. Its great when you sell something to the correct person who need's it. good deal when the seller and buyer both are happy.

Well Randy, guys like me and you will NEVER figure out how the youtube guru's make stuff work. We are used to rusty old stuff not fanciful computers and the non-normal thinking that makes their programs work. But about the thoughts of getting rid of stuff if I haven't used it in ten years is a relatively new concept to me. I'm really trying to move some stuff out so my kids won't have to waste their time doing it in the (hopefully distant) future. LOL. I got rid of the Toyota forklift that ain't rolled a wheel since 2016 and a couple bush hogs and mowers....so I'm just getting started. I couldn't even get 75 bucks for a Superior loader for an 8n Ford so I gave it to a youtube friend in Michigan. He's gonna drive down to pick it up. Probably gonna put another dead Allis C up for 200 bucks.....but at the same time I'm still looking for a good M engine. I found a good runner in Rockford Ill for 600 but that's a pretty long drive.

Well when he texted me and told me what happened I laughed out loud !! I was happy to help the young man out. He's got a better C with a bad motor so he's doing a motor swap. The B and C is essentially the same power unit...at least they bolt up identically.

Man yeah Mr Wendell, we win some we lose some! But I agree you did just enough to pay it forward for him 😉😉 I was worried when you had both plug wires in your hand!!! 😁😁😉😉 I used ri clean points with a dollar bill, if they were really dirty I would use a 20 🤣🤣🤣 Loved the pto belt starter!! That was epic, you are a genius!! Thank you sir for bringing us along!! Can't wait to see what's next!! 😁😁👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Hahahaha....that's funny about the twenty...!! LOL I think I needed a hunnerd for as oxidized as these were. I should have spent a bit more time apparently. But boy I was glad to hear it fire up for him unloading it !! And just with the fuel in the float bowl too. But he quickly tied a plastic tank on it and fired it right up again. He's a happy young man with a really happy 6 year old !! The flat belt trick almost never fails....did I say ALMOST..?? LOL. You can prime the oil pump and prelube a fresh rebuild with this process too. Just slowly turn it over and let the oil pump do its thing before starting.

Allis is know for some good running machines with just a little maintenance. Their ergonomics are a bit questionable for older guys or taller fellows. Kinda scrunch a guy up somewhat to fit the space.

Oh heck yeah Jeff. I usually use electrolysis on the tanks. Works very well except it is a tough job on the ones that have a baffle in them. Here's a sample and I do. have several videos on tractor gas tanks: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KW_Etp_PUqM.html. So far the most superior product I've found is POR 15. But you have to use the full kit.

Remember that the explosive hydrogen gas is given off during the process so be careful to disconnect power before the leads and do it in a lean to or outside. Clean the anode often and replace it if necessary during the process. Another thing, knock as much loose before you start and suck it out with a vacuum. I usually power wash them as the first step. Good luck, and be safe !!

Somebody needs to teach that fellow that you NEVER push down on a crank, when hand cranking any engine. Never wrap your thumb around the crank handle either. Lots of guys have broken arms, wrists or thumbs from not knowing how to properly hand crank an engine.
