Hey Ali, a quick ergonomic tip for you. When you're using a keyboard, it's best to hover your hands over the keyboard. When you rotate your wrist, you're adding a bit of stress on it, and it can lead to carpal tunnel. So try and bring your chair up, or your desk down to keep your wrists from getting bent :)

It definitely negatively affects typing speed to do this. It's probably better for long term health but you lose so much leverage. I go from 130wpm to 60. Granted if you type on an apple style keyboard with a wrist rest you might not have as much drop in performance, but with mechs I feel like the leverage is necessary (for me at least).
@victorugo3875

Just in case you didn't know, the keychron keyboards don't only have one lighting mode. You said later on that you didn't like that the colors switch around, but you can change that by just pressing FN + arrow left/arrow right. Plus if u don't like the color look of it, you can always just swap out the keycaps, it's really easy to change them. Hope this sways your opinion a little bit for esthetics on the k2.

From my research on the topic, I understood that red keys are normally more suited for gaming: They require little force to press, which makes them fast. They are also quiet. However, they do not provide tactile feedback. The blue switches are often quoted to be the best for typing since they give tactile and audible feedback. They can be load, though. The brown switches are a decent compromise. They give tactile feedback, but they are not as loud as the blue switches (yet loader than red). Perhaps have a look at brown at a stage, Ali. It might work for you. It is what I use, and I quite like it :)

What you are using in your mechanical keyboard is a regular mechanical switch which has way more travel than the apple magic keyboard. If you are interested in trying more there is 'Kailh low profile choc switches' which is mechanical and low profile (also less travel obviously) and also some people are buying custom switch and spring to replace their regular mechanical switch spring for better feel and travel. I personally think feel and lack of mistakes are easily as important as raw speed when it comes to overall productivity. My favorite typing experience is without a doubt the IBM Model M or one of the modern buckling spring descendants from Unicomp (who operates the old IBM keyboard factory in Kentucky). Absolutely wonderful keyboards, if a bit ugly.
@AleksiJoensuu
@AleksiJoensuu 10 месяцев назад
Same here. For one, I spend much more time thinking about what I'm going to write than actually typing out the letters. And for two, every mistake takes much more time to fix than outright speed can really correct. Of course usually speed and accuracy develop together so it's not really "either or", but still I'll always err on the side of accuracy than speed. I think both of these are things typing tests don't really account for. It would be interesting to have a typing test mode where 0 mistakes are allowed, i.e. you HAVE to go back and fix the mistake.

it's actually much harder to keep the flow when you type random words with no sentence structure. I mean when I take typing test I'm at like probably 75 ish wpm, but when I communicate my own thoughts I'm a bit faster than that. Mainly because the words I'm typing come naturally as a flow, whereas for the typing test my brain often stops and thinks like "why is bearable coming after pub" or whatever :)

I started typing practice around April of last year. I have basically done it every day because I just like it for some reason, and I finally reached 100 WPM a few days ago. It feels great and all, but my accuracy still sucks XD. edit: BTW, I started somewhere around 28 WPM.

Mechanical keyboards can be hard on the fingers and--in my experience--can be more likely to cause repetitive strain injuries if you use one as your daily keyboard for writing. I would suggest getting O-rings for your mechanical keyboard if you plan on using it as your main tool as a writer. It really helps!

I’d be interested to see you ,as a writer, to try out different types of mechanical switches (tactile, clicky, linear, low profile) and different styles of key cap profiles to see how that changes typing speed, feel, and experience. Like if you prefer penguins with KAT keys or ink blacks with OEM profiles (random examples) there’s just so many factors like switch actuation points and travel distance, key shape and wobble, layout. I’d value your viewpoints in contrast to the gamers and coders.

Been thinking about getting a mechanical keyboard for a while but never knew which to get. I think, from what you have said in the vides, the Keychron will be agreat entry point. I love the chiclet design that you see with Apple keyboards. My Dell keyboard has those style keys too. My biggest goal is to practice typing faster and touch typing because I'm always looking at the keyboard and my hands move way too much! Also, congratulations on your new PB! Gotta go fast!

To both increase typing speed and reduce the potential for RSI (repetitive stress injury), I would highly recommend using a wrist rest that is level with the keyboard you are using. Especially so with the taller and more angled mechanical keyboards. Much like playing piano, it is ideal and most comfortable to have your arms and wrists level with the keys on the keyboard.

I wonder if the time it takes to actually practice typing this fast leads to net gains in time overall. If you are transcribing, coding or copying over notes all day, then possibly. This is why typing speed used to be a number one skill of secretaries. The issue is for a lot of tasks, your typing speed can end up being faster than your writing speed. When ‘writing’ I’m crafting sentences, thinking of the best way of expressing my ideas, choosing words carefully. This slows down the process much more than my finger speed over the keyboard. So while typing quickly can be a useful skill, don’t spend ‘too’ much time practicing it unless you think its going to be useful to your specific line of work/study, as that time spent practicing could be used working on another skill.

Thanks for shortcut tips too. Great work. Feeling is everything as if we are happy, we type more. Also, in your testing, remember that as you practice, you get faster, so to be fair to the keyboards you need to begin with each one in the same typing state of mine and practice. (Being nitpicky now) You are such a darling that yous stir my mind. Love the pink, white blue look keyboard. Cherry blues? 140 words per minute? Great work all round, down, across, etc.

It's not that you need more movement in a mechanical keyboard, it's just that you are bottoming out which is not necessary. The rest of the travel after the key press registers is only to avoid that impact and tire you less than if it was stopping flat. The force involved is directly related to the type of switch too so you can't generalize about mechanical keyboards, it gives the wrong image to the ones getting started in this community.

As someone who can also type at around these speeds: Keyboard doesn't matter. As long the layout isn't weird and the keys aren't hard to press, you will be consistently the same across all keyboards after enough practice.
