But you used the Surface Book exactly like I would prefer to use it, and proved it. Even though your video is three years old, it convinced me to buy a SB2. People always say that a product like that isn't really for designers, that you want a Wacon Cintiq to work, and all. But the price of a good computer, either Mac or PC, PLUS a Cintiq is huge! You can have a great experience with a product like the Surface, with different latency, but for half the price. Not every student, or beginner, specially out of the US, can afford them. To me, the Surface line is a wonderful option. And, in time, will make a Cintiq obsolete.

Another great use of the Surfacebook is as a student. Reading textbooks on my Surfacebook is a breeze. I can use the pen as a highlighter and it's great.

Windows hello is SO awesome I've never used my password since and it always work it's the first face recognition that's not a gimmick and actually a really useful feature (it even works on UAC and any Windows system thing where a password is needed)

that was probably the most informative and relevant review i've seen ! please make a surface pro 4 (i7/16gb version) review and compare both if you can... im still undecided between the two as im not sure if the screen size of 12.3" is manageable in programs like autocad, photoshop and illustrator...

I have watched two of your Surface series reviews. I am impressed by your knowledge and objectivity. Good job. I will going back to school for a medical related program ( AKA course in Australia). I am torn between Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book. Whereas the former is lighter and therefore portable, its 12" screen is is on the smaller side for me. I find the Surface Book's 13.3 " screen realistic and commensurate to the Mac Book Pro, a machine I am hitherto accustomed to. What is your valued advice/comment ?

Great review, it is sad that the Surface Book isn't available in my country yet. If you can compare it with surface Pro 4 it would be great. Still undecided which one is better but I do need the processor for Autocad

I would like that the upcoming revisions of the pro and book were one and the same; meaning a base tablet that you can uso on its own with differen options for keyboards, but this keyboards would have different battery options, gpu option, speakers options, just a plain keyboard and so on.

I have a new surface book and am becoming familiar with it. One suggestion I would have (among several) would be for them to give you a way to charge the tablet when it is detached from the base. The charger comes out easily, and I didn't notice it until I saw the battery icon draining and the screen went into energy saving mode, darkening the screen. Then I had to search around through the wires and cables under my desk to find the tiny plug. It looks elegant, but if it falls out a lot it can be a nuisance.

Great review. Do you have many of the same problems that other owners have? Screen freezing or tablet becoming unresponsive when detaching or reattaching the screen? Slow read speeds, or any other issues? Would you recommend purchasing this one or waiting until the next gen?

Great video sir! One question though... I noticed that you had your surface paired with an external monitor, but the entire screen on the external monitor was not used (i.e. the projection was not stretched to meet the monitor`s display dimensions. Can you please explain to me why you cant have your surface display be projected over the entire screen real estate of your external monitor? I have an old HP laptop connected to an ext. monitor as well. I noticed that when I used the HDMI cable to project onto the 21 inch external monitor, the projection was the same size of my 15 inch laptop screen (therefore huge black border around the projected image on the external monitor). However when I used the trusty VGA cable, the entire 21 inches of the monitor were used. I thought that it was just my old laptop`s poor graphic performance that prevented it from projecting onto the entire external monitor screen when the high resolution HDMI cable was used... I see however that you have the same problem, with a more modern machine. Your advice/explanation is deeply appreciated!

i didn't know that it had a magnet at right side too. being a right handed person I always thought why they didn't add a magnet on right side, i mean wouldn't it be easier to take it of from that side. thanks for this information.

I bought one a few years back. The screen keeps hating up badly. The base is ungluing too. I never dropped it, nor dropped water on/near it. But it is a very interesting platform, and lots of nifty ideas. Like the detachable screen, and the fact that the brain is on the screen and not the base. I hope MS keeps developing this product. It’s one those too good to be truth to mess it up (discontinue it).

Great video! I ordered the Surface Book last night and after watching this, I feel all the more better about the decision. One thing that I'd like to know more about is the Surface Dock. I've heard that it has trouble running 4k monitors from the Surface Book. Does anyone know if this is true?

I wonder if it can handle 3d rendering of revit architecture etc in it? is it mucho more powerful than a asus zenbook i7 model?they seem to be the same in specs but there's a 1400 dollar difference between them. Im just not sure if this worth it!!

Do you have games in the SD card? How well do they run? Would you recommend me to install VST sound libraries in the SD Card? (Hollywood 120 GB ones) Or buy the one with a bigger SSD drive?

Update: Our team has added the following to the mix. Surface Book with performance base - Much more muscle in the same package and with the same intention. We will buy more of these as we added three new associates. No one complains "It's not a Mac." Surface Studio. All of us have had deep experience with Macs from the beginning of the line through 2015. We tired of the slow pace of innovation in the Mac line of PCs and laptops. Along came Surface Studio. Here's the first breath of fresh air in the desktop creative space in over 5 years! We bought 3 of them.

HI there, Im wondering if it is possible to detach into tablet mode and then connect the tablet directly to a surface dock? The use case is that i sometimes only want to bring the tablet to work and leave the keyboard at home.

The objections to the Surface Book, here and elsewhere are: 1 - lapability. The screen wobbles in laptop mode when touched 2 - the fulcrum hinge creates an objectionable gap "Could accumulate lint" according to one reviewer. 3 - battery life of the detached clipboard/tablet is weak. 4 - not a sufficient platform for video editing. "The Ultimate Editing Machine - Not!" one reviewer complained. 5 - headphone jack misplaced - top of screen vs. bottom 6 - keyboard a bit mushy 7 - Trackpad not responsive 8 - WIN10 not stable 9 - lack of WIN10 specific apps 10 - "It's not as good as/I've always used/serious designers only use" a Mac. 11 - Not a gaming machine Those are the biggies. There are many more. My group of collaborators began to tire of the lack of refresh in the Apple line of desk/laptops. Understand, we are a very agnostic group. You can fall in love with another person. Anything else and you are just plain weird. We only want to provide value to our clients. Technology is a productivity investment. Each of us has a history of experience with machines, operating systems and apps dating to 1982! We were limping along on some 4 to 10 year old, mostly Apple, machines. We like to suck every last ounce of value out of our investments before anything is discarded! But we've always been a mixed group. The time came in early 2015 to bust the budget and buy new hardware. Most of us - but not all - have to be mobile all the time. After lots of research and loud arguments, we pulled the trigger on a 5 new machines. Purchased over a 14 month period, all were Surface Books. Min config - i5, 8 gb, 256 SSD, separate graphics processor. Max config - i7, 16 GB, 1TB SSD, separate graphics processor. We are a design house dependent on Illustrator, Indesign, Photoshop, & Iinvision, All are running on our new platform. Answers: 1 - Wobble: We don't need touch when in laptop mode. 2 - Fulcrum hinge gap: A dirty backpack is bad for lots of reasons. We keep our portable machines in sleeves. 3 - Battery life when detached: We don't use the clipboard all day. It is "The Ultimate Laptop." 4 - Insufficient for video editing. "The Ultimate Editing Machine - Not!" one reviewer complained. The tricked out I7 model has never let us down. 5 - Headphone jack misplaced. Get a life. 6 - Keyboard a bit mushy. We love it! 7 - Trackpad not responsive. Ours are. 8 - WIN10 not stable. Get off the Insider program! We have four production machines on W10 Pro (whatever is the most recent non-Insider release) and one experimental machine on the Insider Ring. Standard release is rock solid. 9 - lack of WIN10 specific apps - Illustrator, Indesign, Photoshop, & Iinvision work fine for us. 10 - "It's not as good as/I've always used/serious designers only use" a Mac. We used to agree with this. 11 - Not a gaming machine. Right.

can you adjust the resolution setting on external monitor? so there won't be black bars on the side.

have u tried to unlock surface book with your picture (photo print or phone) to the camera? is it work??

Very good overview. I disagree with the conclusion, though. As much as I wanted to love it, I was very disappointed, both with the power and actual functionality. For video editing and being able to easily switch between tablet and laptop use, the Vaio Z Canvas brings way more power than the Surface Book does. You're also not hampered by a mechanism that only works perfectly when both batteries are fully loaded. If the battery in either dips too low, you simply can't disconnect the tablet portion and have to wait until it's properly charged (and it charges VERY SLOWLY). This sucks if you've used the Surface book in presentation mode and want to use it as a laptop. I love the Surface Book as a laptop: the screen is great, battery life is great, and coming from using MacBooks for years; the keyboard and trackpad are the best I've ever used on a Windows laptop. I think it's one of the best looking laptops out there, and it feels great. As a tablet though, I miss everything that makes the Surface Pro 4 great: decent battery life, the kickstand, ports, and a microSD slot. And it's way underpowered for its price.

I am having a tough time choosing between SB and SP4.

It looks good. But will I be able to run softwares like Autocad and other for architecture and design? Is that so powerfull?

Also, you may actually be able to do one better than my previous request. You seem to have a good sense as to what this would be well suited for. I am in the medical world and need something that can handle taking copious notes - saw you flipped this and made it like a yoga model which would work for that. I also do some traveling for assorted events - sometimes as the speaker which requires making a presentation, others as the "student", and even occasionally for pleasure but almost always being to be able to check in even if not by phone then by email. Many times I find myself working with 20 tabs open at once and have a few newsletters I put together which, although not an artist, fall back on being able to use the technical assistance to make the final presentation presentable.i will be making an attempt at provide webinar type things that will require a bit of talent from the machine as well as camera - and not nasal hair camera views please. Much of my entertainment comes from my old laptop now as well as mostly actually, my phone so good screen and speakers are a must.One of my pieces of software holds patient info so privacy may be another component to be aware of.Thank you. I will keep an eye out for a response as from the reviews it looks like you do read them.

The surface book and surface pro 4 is awesome I'm typing this on a Pro 4 but windows and linux just don't work for me if it ran OSX 100% stable and supported all of it's feature then I would buy it but that's probably never happening

So, if you use Photoshop, you must also be using Nik by Google as a plug-in. How did you resolve the horrible font scaling problem? Nik fonts when used as a plug-in is absolutely unreadable at high resolution. Please don't suggest a lower resolution as a solution.

Great video, but the Surface Book does not use 3D face recognition. It cant because it only has one front camera. It uses an infrared sensor instead ;)
