Microsoft Surface Book Long Term Review: 2.5 Months Later

Lisa Gade revisits the Microsoft Surface Book, Microsoft’s first laptop that’s also a tablet with pen. When we first reviewed the Surface Book at the end of October 2015, it had early release issues since it was the first Intel Skylake laptop to ship with Windows 10. We look at how the Core i7 with NVIDIA graphics and the Core i5 without dedicated graphics have progressed as Microsoft has released driver and firmware updates. Lisa covers battery life, display driver stability, MS Edge web browser, Connected Standby/sleep and more. She also compares it to a four competitors currently on the market. If you’d like to see the Surface Book smack down a laptop that we haven't yet done, drop a line in the comments section.
The Surface Book starts at $1,499 for the Core i5 model and the dedicated graphics option and Core i7 bring the price closer to $2,000. The NVIDIA dedicated graphics are in the base of the machine and they offer double the performance of Intel HD 520 graphics, but as an NVIDIA 940M equivalent, fall short of higher end gaming GPUs like the GTX 960M. If gaming is one of your goals, go for the dedicated graphics, otherwise save some cash and go with integrated-only graphics.

You do such a great job with your reviews, Lisa. Nobody does it better! I've had my Surface Book i7/16GB/512GB since the day it was introduced and after the Dec 2nd video driver fix, it has been error free. I love this thing! For photography I love having a resolution of 3000 x 2000, the same aspect ratio as my cameras. Using the pen for photo retouching with Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop CC is fabulous. I've had literally dozens of computers since my first IBM PC in 1982. This is the best, most fun to use PC I've ever owned.

That's exactly why I want this /the SP4. Any thoughts on i5 vs i7 and 8 vs 16gb of ram? I'm solely planning on editing 24 megapixel RAW photos

+adam999444 Honestly, the Core i5 with 8 gigs of RAM works very well for 24MP RAW files.

I guess what I like most about Lisa Gade's reviews is the fact there's none of the subjective non-technical puffing I see in sooooo many reviews*. Articulate, factual, nicely technical when needed and enthusiastic. *(Other than the term "Smackdown" used in other reviews, can we please retire this phrase? It's just so 'Jr. High')

Things to note, i have had it for a month, the hello feature, works 50% of the times. Had trouble fixing pre-cc photoshop with wintab drivers, broke the pen in the process, be carefull when you open the pen, it is fragile! Battery might be a shot in the dark, i'm at 25% brightness watching this vid and i only have 6 hours left of battery(just unpluggeed at 100%). I also never put it to sleep, it completely drains the battery And the most annoying problem is that sometimes it will not turn on! You have to replug and hold the power button for 10 secs for several times for it to restart, that might be a bug because of this tablet 2-1 (WHICH IS AMAZING) i use alot of the gpu on games and editing video, and when i get tired i just want to undock, press a button and lay on the couch( TOTALLY WORTH IT!) never expected it to feel so good! On gaming side, i play heroes of the storm 30-70 fps on medium(1080p), csgo runs smooothhh(1080p), all other indie games runs really well, and i'm going to try to play MGO that is coming out this week! Other things to note, the resolution causes alot of problems, be it in programs or games, but it is quickly solved, the pros of this machine, far outwheight its con! LOVE MY SURFACE BOOK

Thank you so much for the video! Now I know what to watch out for just in case. I got my Surface Book (i7/16GB/512GB/dGPU) early this month and it was hilarious watching it get set up because the new driver updates weren't on there yet. In the beginning we had I think 3-5 issues, then it was perfectly fine when I updated it at home. I'm really enjoying it so far. I was impressed that it was able to play Skyrim and Elite: Dangerous on high graphics settings. (I had really low expectations for the dGPU.)

Really love the idea behind this PC. I wanted just a little more from the dedicated GPU so hopefully the next version will be a little more flexible there. I love that screen ratio. Playing with one in the store, I'm finding myself playing out this tug of war in my head between this and a MacBook Pro.

I had a Dell XPS 12 that just died the other day. The lights won't come on, the repair shop said the motherboard is DEAD. I have been looking at laptop deals because luckily it "tis the season" to buy a new laptop. By just searching for "xxx laptop review" I have watched 5-10 videos and all of them (once I realized it) are actually your videos. I just wanted to drop a note to say you are doing an excellent job and I appreciate your videos! With a name like +MobileTechReview I expected one of those spammy sites that just post pictures of the laptop in a slideshow with a computer narration voice reading the CNET review honestly, but your videos are the complete opposite: interesting, in-depth, well-thought out and presented, excellent quality, and in my case, EXTREMELY helpful. Please keep doing what you are doing! You are an excellent reviewer and the videos you make are excellent! You've helped steer me in a direction and I am now between the Surface Book, Yoga 910, and Dell XPS 13.

***** I went with the Surface Book, I got it on sale for Black Friday from Amazon. I liked the idea of the pen, and because on Black Friday the mid-range Yogas were sold out. I won't buy a Dell ever again. So much better than the XPS was. And the pen works really well. The price is the only downside but if you can get it on sale again I got the $1,800 model on sale for almost $500 off on Black Friday making it around the same price as most of the others. Definitely recommend it!

Great review! I can't wait for you to review the HP Elitebook Folio G1 2016 model with 4k display. I just bought the HP 1020 G1 months ago, and I just love it. It's the best notebook I ever had, I don't miss my Surface Pro 3 (which I hated as a laptop: runs hot, fan runs constantly, and hard to use in your lap) or the Vaio Z's I also have. The 1020 G1 became my main business laptop because the screen is perfect for software development (2560x1440) and business in general, and it's completely quiet (no fan). Once you use a notebook with no moving parts like this, it's impossible to go back (at least for me as these are normally personal preferences). So, I hope the industry continues to invest in these 'noiseless' notebooks. I can gladly give up a bit of power of an i5 or i7 model for the comfort of no vibration or noise (I use my desktop if I need power). On a side note, this notebook is solid like a rock, I can drive my truck over it, and I feel it will not damage it. I'm surprised the media didn't notice it. Hopefully the 2016 model will attract more attention.

Great video as usual. Please do more of these follow up reviews. Anyone who has been in IT for the long haul will agree I'm sure that reliability of products is decreasing, primarily due to poorly tested software (including firmware, drivers, OS and applications) which makes these follow up videos all the more important.

+Mark Harwood I haven't got my hands on a Surface Book yet, but being in IT I can safely say that the quality of software (Windows & drivers for the most part) have degraded significantly over the last 5-6 years. OS X has been tuned very well over the same period of time, and Linux derivatives were always stable and they catch up with the built in features. So, for these reasons (and a few deeper ones actually) I decided to buy a 15" Macbook Pro 9 months ago, and I can safely say that I didn't waste one of the many euros I spent buying it. It's the only computer I ever owned that has been without even the slightest of OS/drivers problems for that long. I die to try the surface book because of the dev stuff that I do, but looking at where it stands in the market it's not appealing enough for me to replace my much more powerful (yet cheaper) macbook.

Nicely done. Two upcoming devices that emphasize slim & light tablet form factor for Windows 10 with a pen: 12" Toshiba DynaPad (Wacom AES) (ships on Jan 19th) and Samsung TabPro S (pen tech TBD) (ships in late Feb). Individual reviews and then a smackdown of these two would be great!

I currently own a Surface Book (typing this review on it) and I could not be any happier! It is everything I could dream of! At the beginning of owning this laptop, I was a little shaky about it and was considering to return it to Best Buy, but I decided to stick around for a little while, and I am so thankful I did! I got no more bugs! I love its keyboard, trackpad, battery (12+ hours), screen (I don't mind it's not 4k, it's still gorgeous) , hardware, speed, design, and stylus! It makes me so productive and has even inspired me to draw! I had a MacBook Pro and I can fully declare that this is 100% better! I can also play call of duty black ops 3 on low graphics! It is truly the ultimate laptop and the most productive device. The one complaint I have is that there is only 4 hours of battery life detached but I mostly clipboard and I only need the lightness if I have to show someone something quickly! I cant wait for the Surface Phone and hopefully the Surface watch in my modern house! AMAZING! :)! It is in my opinion the best laptop and convertible! The money isn't a problem because it is like an IPad pro and MacBook pro together! So if you can buy it, GET IT!!!

Great review, thanks Lisa. I do a lot of graphics work, so the pen feature looks very interesting. 50 years ago the big buzz was Brian Josephson's Quantum Tunnelling. Dr Brian shared a Nobel Prize for it. My Mathematics Tutor, Mr Waghorne at Wellington College, excused me to get on with investigating Quantum Computing. (Think Japanese "Chop-Sticks' Multiplication.) Google have invested in D-Wave, but we all hope that room temperature (+ Peltier Heat Pump and HTS tunnelling superconductors) coupled to ballistic 3D Architecture peripherals (Rochester Uni 2006) will help introduce a paradigm shift in portable computing. ... 50 years is a long time to wait, but it's been well worth it all the same. Terahertz processing is the next level.

I'd like to see how the Surface Book compares to the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 460, since it also is a 2-in-1 with dGPU and a pen. There's a single model being sold by Best Buy now, but hopefully configurable ones will be available from Lenovo soon. I'm particularly interested in how well the pen works, since it doesn't have the eraser on the end like the Surface pen. I also feel like the 360 hinges used by the Yoga and HP Spectre x360 are a much less awkward way to quickly convert to tablet mode than the Surface Book detach/reattach method, especially if you are in a lecture taking notes or something.

i can't decide between power and usability - dell xps 15 vs surface book. It seems like you can't really use the touch screen extensively on the dell but it's smashes it for power. I wish I could have flexibility and power as I want it for producing music using touch screen. 14000 vs 7500 geekbench.

Zenbook Pro Smackdown :o. Honestly, the only thing that would have made the Surface Book perfect, was to have a quad-core in the base with the same thickness and with at least 2 hours battery life when not plugged in the keyboard. I am sure the Surface Book (2016) will be amazing with the Nvidia Pascal GPUs and Kaby Lake processors (hopefully quad-core :P).

Hey Lisa, My last laptop was a Macbook Pro 13" 2011 retina, cheapest model. I'd like to get something eventually with great battery life, screen, keyboard and trackpad. Fast SSD would also be nice. Games are a nice plus but absolutely not required. Should I wait a little bit more? If so, in what direction should I look? Ativ seems to have low battery life. Sometimes afraid of switching back to windows purely because of trackpad which I've fallen in love with. Oh and one more thing I've been thinking about: robustness. How long before battery's turn bad? One thing I liked about the macbook 2011 was that I still get about 2,5-3 hours at full brightness. A lot more at lower brightness settings. I've seen a lot of computers have batteries turn bad in a very short amount of time.

Hi Lisa. Great review! Can you please do some more reviews on tablets with active digitizers and styluses (styli?) Personally, I love using a digital stylus for note-taking and sketching, and I have long felt that a tablet was the sweet spot size for a stylus. What do you think? Do you agree? (I still don't understand why more companies - like Samsung - don't agree with me.) I recently bought an Asus ZenPad S 8.0 with the optional Z-stylus for just that reason. If you could review that device, especially with the optional stylus, that would be great! A Galaxy Note is nice, but too small for extended note-taking or sketching. And I personally feel that anything over 10 inches is too big to be used comfortably as a notepad/sketchpad. So while I think that the Surface Book is a great device, I'd personally use it most of the time as simply a laptop, in which case I don't need the detachable display and can buy another laptop with similar/better specs for less money.

Hi Lisa, As ever a great review and nice for UK based viewers such as myself to see this 2.5 month review. Due to be available here Feb 18th. I am please to here that a lot of the bugs have been squashed. As I have yet to see a Surface Book in the metal - only played with the Pro 4, can you let me know if the Book's screen flexes (a small dip surrounding the pen that almost distorts the panel) a bit with the pressure of using the pen. I noticed this on the Pro 4. Doesn't look like a fault as such, just the thinness of the glass I guess, but this did leave me with a weary feeling re durability. Be pleased to know if the Book exhibits this - issue - or - design attribute or if the screen over all is solid as with the iPad Pro. Thanks in advance.
@mobiletechreview
@mobiletechreview 8 лет назад
+Uni MindBalance I have a very light touch with the pen, but the Book display flexes less than the Pro 4. And you're correct, it's not a defect, simply a result of the design and glass used.

+MobileTechReview Lisa, don't forget the Toshiba DynaPad (ships on Tuesday). It is even lighter than the TabPro S and the pen tech may be much better!

Can you review Toshiba PORTÉGÉ Z20T-C-11C? I think it's the top leading portable device in terms of productivity, it's got everything in the weight of 3.3 lb ....

+-.- Cat But it doesn't. It's hard to get a gpu into a 13inch device and that's the true genius of what MS has created here.
@ralexand56

+-.- Cat True. I already have a non-retina MacBook and a sp3. Both get little use now. Can't go back to no touch and no pen on Mac laptops but they are top notch in terms of quality. Hoping upcoming updates will resolve my crashing issues. Don't won't to return it and have to reinstall all my software.

+-.- Cat Or maybe they should implement AMOLED (like the ones in Samsung phones) into the Macbook 2nd edition. It would be nice.

***** Yup. They sold an overpriced product, a block of metal. Yay.

For photo editing should I go with the Surface Book, SP4, Razer Blade Stealth, Dell XPS 15, Dell XPS 13 or Macbook Pro 13in. What's your opinion, for that type of task on these laptops.

+Josh Vassar I'd go with the bigger screen- XPS15, or perhaps the 15" macbook pro.
@mobiletechreview
@mobiletechreview 8 лет назад
+Josh Vassar Any one of those would be excellent! If you want to use a pen for photo editing, the Surface models would be a better choice, and the 3:2 aspect ratio is nice for photo editing too. But if you don't care about the pen-- all would work well.

Would have been awesome to have the tablet portion retain the kickstand somehow for when it's disconnected from the keyboard dock.

I don't understand where the Surface Book fits in. I mean .. I got the Core i7 Surface Pro 4 and it is absolutely the most awesome product ever. It is, hands down, the best laptop AND the best tablet I've ever had. Lightning fast, light, works as intended and looks sleek. Not to forget about the high quality feel and that amazing keyboard (I type really fast on it). So, the Surface Book has a slightly more powerful GPU, but the i7 SP4 has an Iris GPU and to be honest, it is surprisingly powerful for games. With that said, the SP4 is not for gaming, but it sure as hell is capable of it.

+Stian Eng Holtet I'd say the Book is for folks who want a traditional laptop design and ergonomics and also for those who find the Pro 4's display a little too small.

+Stian Eng Holtet Im incredibly happy with the i5 model. Tried it out foremost as a study device for actuarial exams which are largely pdf papers. The one note and drawboard combination is fantastic. My only complaint so far due to no workaround or solution is lack of swipe writing for the onscreen keyboard.
