Microsoft Surface Book - Full Review 

+Jean Cédric Huet yeah I was looking back at my reviews and my review of the macbook pro was the first one where I really took my time to explain why its good and I love doing up close shots I feel like no one else does shots up close with longer view time. How was the music? anything else you think I should of added?

+Lesley Harrys Yeah when I first used a macbook I was stunned It was basically just white metal It was like there was no brand image but the thing is that is there brand image! or at least its part of how they want you to feel while using it. I'm guilty I need to face the cam more often I'm not sure how I can fix that but originally I started filming with me just aiming towards the center eye of the lense but after a while I like to see my self. Hoping my next review I will no longer waste time looking at the screen! anytime I get an offer to make my video instantly better ill take it!

+SERGE You did a pretty good job covering everything. It would have been nice if you could place a common object (another laptop, an iphone, etc) next to the laptop in order to have a better idea of its actual size. Also I'm worried about the extreme high resolution on such a small screen, would be nice if you could browse to a website and let us see if the letters are readable. Also a maximized browser window on a website such as youtube or several windows side by side (IE, Word) will allow us to see how the content fills up the screen in order to give us a better idea of how much screen real estate is available while still being usable in such a small screen for those of us that need to multitask over multiple windows at the same time.

+SERGE Not a lot of laptop reviewers talk about all the glitches encountered while using the laptop. I really like that you talked about that.

Thank you! Re: my Surface Pro 7, i5, 8gig, 128. Playing with resolution doesn’t help. These things helped slightly: bumped up magnification a notch, ClearType, enhanced color profile shows the red & green underlines better, & set Word to gray. BTW, the battery on the one I have lasts 3-4 hours. Microsoft granted me a ticket for a free tech support session. I will exchange my lemon for another Surface Pro 7 on Sunday at BestBuy & contact Microsoft to see if they can help me set it up so that Word, Excel & reading are as clear as they are on other computers, or even on the Pro X. Strange that Microsoft computers are so quirky with Microsoft programs, but I am not yet willing to give up because I got my Surface Pro 7, i5, 8 gig, 128 for $699 & I love the design. If Microsoft tech support can help me make the replaced Surface Pro 7 highly productive in Word, Excel & reading, I will send you a list of what they did to get that done. If I can’t get the replaced Surface Pro 7 working well for office & reading purposes, I will consider the Surface Pro X, the iPad 12.9, the Laptop 3 (although drawing on it will be awkward & I don’t want fabric on an attached keyboard) & a refurbished MacBook Air. I LOVED the gaming laptop suggestion. I can’t afford it right now but I am definitely going to look into that when I can afford it. Yesterday was the first day people were allowed by appointment into BestBuy in Los Angeles since the COVID-19 shutdown. Their Surface Pro 7 looked fine, but in Word, the task bar was still blurry & some icons, such as those in the paragraph section on the home tab, which were very hard to make out. A step down in quality compared to the taskbar on Word on any other computer I have seen, even in the 90’s. The task bar was the right size, but I asked the Microsoft specialist at the store to enlarge it to see if that would help. He could not. The document itself was clear, but the page had an odd slightly yellow cast that the page on my Surface Pro 7 doesn’t get. This gives me hope that Microsoft tech support can make the replacement Surface Pro 7 that I will pick up on Sunday work a bit better than the one I saw at BestBuy. Next to it was the Surface Pro X, which I had previously dismissed based on reviews. Word looks crystal clear on it. The word task bar shows up perfectly & unnecessarily large, but not in the way. The screen in general looked better than the Surface Pro 7. The price was $849 yesterday on B&H. I was tempted & I think the price could fall even more in the near future. Looking at the Surface Pro X screen was a relief instead of a strain, even when type was tiny. How will the X, with it’s virtual 64bit issues perform, compared to the Surface Pro 7 i5, 8 ram, 128? Cool yeah ill take a look at that list once they get it working... hopefully. Microsofts known for having buggy software. Yeah where I live in the specific city that im in they are not taking covid seriously at all we have the highest infection rate in Oregon and our best buy never even shut down. Thats a big issue with microsoft and best buy, hate to say it but it probably wouldnt happen on a mac, at apple they actually set the standard for the best support possible and they never have stupid software issue or support issues. In fact the microsoft store and bestbuy try to model there stores after the apple store setup. I know you probably dont wanna hear that but if you try and they keep providing terrible support and cant fix a simple user interface problem seriously check out macs.... The mac has perfected its art but surface still struggles with many compromises, on paper and in principle you would think the surface is better. And I used to also think that. The surface pro X is a huge leap forward, but it may be just a little too soon. Microsoft has been Beta testing there products on there users for a while. They don't believe in making a good product and then releasing, they want you to be the guinea pig. The proof is in the problematic releases of there software and hardware. The X features the ARM processor. These chips which first made a mass appearance in phones don't operate on windows and other desktop/laptop operating systems. This is why Virtualization is needed to get the OS working right, this has resulted in a nightmare like experience for the users. Microsoft tried this exact same thing with windows RT and it failed. I think this current release will be real rough ride for its users but this time Microsoft planes to make it work no mater what. There was a huge war waged between x86 and ARM, ARM won the war its the dominant processor now, all operating system must accommodate this chip. The companies that design the operating system software are not ready for this shift but they are rushing to market there operating systems. Microsoft uses a cheap way to implement it OS via virtualization and most applications still don't work right on its OS. Users are miserable! If you want to be on the bleeding edge take the dive with the X but be warned. It may take a generation or two before the X really catches on, it is the future but its just not ready yet. ARM can be as fast or faster then x86, its way smaller, uses a fraction of the power, doesnt get hot to the same degree and has insanely good battery we are talking about 2-3x better. A desktop/laptop ARM implementation is the future. The Ipad still sucks.. You can use it, it works but it wont be a productivity powerhouse like the Surface. If your work is mostly office type stuff then the IPad is perfect for you, the Ipad is evolving to becoming the surface pro, and the Pro X wants to be the Ipad both aren't really that decent... Getting a surface or an ipad is still an investment into the future... hoping they will get it right. Ipad users have dreamed of this and it also hasn't happened for them yet. There is a chance microsoft will pull it off and defeat apples Ipad but I don't know if that will happen seeing as the Ipad sorta sucks(its already fully completed and ready)... and it has the full backing and support and mature market from the iphone and even its mature ipad app market.... and still it cant beat a laptop or desktop. Microsoft believes that the ipad got it wrong... But Microsoft also got the tablet basically wrong also.. The past this didnt work out because we didnt have the right Arm processors and now we do. But... now we dont have the right software... and the software is way more advanced and hard to design. I would say designing a good operating system is 10x harder then making the hardware aspects of the tablet/computer. This is why we have had tablets for years. Ipad has existed for 10 years promising to replace the laptop and tablet they got close but it still cant.... and microsoft literally had tablets in the 90s.... 30 freakin years ago.. Right now our software is so buggy and glitchy its a nightmare, every computer system I use there is bug, there is a glitch, there is glitches fixing glitches, there are features that exist soley from bugs interacting with each other, our machines have a mind of there own now. I think something else is approaching to the computer world. I am not sure what though, probably the singularity. I doubt our software will ever be ready for our hardware, Once AI figures this problem out then it will finally be flawless computing experience, not sure where the human will be in all of this but I'm sure it will happen in the next 10 years...

In the 70s they predicted tablet computers and everyone couldnt get them out of our heads. In the 2000s as a 9 year old I knew that the pocket pc would take over, it was the only thing I ever thought about. It was common place to assemble and build your very own computer. Our societies computer knowledge is much worse now then ever before, everyone is blind to how horrible our software is, its a shock, it was once common place to learn about each computers science, as a child the parents would teach there kids how to assemble there own computers. Now everyone is just lost with confused priorities and dopamine spikes trigger by AI's in social media manipulate our every move. Its a scary future worse software and lost populace. I think that fact that you have UI trouble is just a small precursor to whats coming.

+David White built in pen battery makes a lot of sense! thats a pretty good idea. My dads co-workers also had similar driver issues but perhaps they where not updating. Overall though really liked the device!

Hi David. I have the same use case matlab, autocad, programming and using one note for elogbooks. Could u please confirm ur using the i5, 8GB RAM with GPU? Can u also use windows snipping tool when in tablet mode using the pen? Cheers

+Tim Sutton-Brand I give it a year release date so probably in about 8-6 months. I wanna see a more stable device. with slightly less price, a hindge that doesn't loose paint from day one and a more powerful cpu, they use weaker 15watt I want to see a 28watt cpu in there for video editing. The 940m is good enough but I would prefer a 960m at that price range. if they bring the price back down to 1300 with the 940m than ill take it!

+SERGE Yep I agree, would be amazing to see a device that manages to have a premium design like this, excellent tablet functionality and also house a more powerful GPU like a 960M (I think anything higher than that is wishful thinking!) Do you think the next model will have a different physical design or do you reckon the only think they'll update is the internals?

+Tim Sutton-Brand The surface line up has a history of actually changing there devices so I think they will not only improve internals but to some extent externals as well. they will most likely increase the hinge, add an hdmi and a few other things.

+Pedro Gomez - Faccio it can get close to the power of the MacBook Air but the air will still be 20% faster and that's even if you buy the most expensive 12" MacBook. Sure the ssd speed improvement is there but most of its hardware can hardly take advantage of that boost. The CPU improvement is there and same with the GPU but it's still not that much more powerful of course if I was gonna get any version it would be the more modern version but as of now the air is still more powerful.

Its true I may have been a bit rough when I said the tablet mode may not be as useful but your right you bring up a good point if you compare it to an ipad its already got no ports but I was comparing it to the pro and perhaps it may not be too fair to do so. The Surface Book is a great laptop if only it was more affordable.

+eskimosand The macbooks where one of the first mainstream laptops that where expensive but people bought them because they liked them a lot. In this case its the same thing but its more expensive. I hope microsoft can find a way to make it affordable.

Well the surface really is a piece of awesome tech I think maybe your settings are incorrect. Have you tried tweaking the Display settings under windows? Go to PC settings then click on System, Under the display tab you will see Scale and Layout tweak the "change the size of text" settings to see if any big differences occur and if this does not work try adjusting the resolution. You may either need to adjust one of these above ^ or both, have you tried adjusting these in particular? if you fail to adjust in windows I'm confident there are other methods possibly even in the applications them self's. When Microsoft Designed the surface pro it was suppose to work well with microsoft apps I think either your settings got some how messed up or there may be some kind of defect in the display panel. I think your problem with the device definitely has a fix see if you experience this same issue with other Surface pro 7 devices and if not then tweak settings or exchange/refund the device. Other great devices to consider would be the 11" macbook air: amzn.to/2XtndOT Keep in mind this device is a bit older and people consider the screen somewhat low res. 12" macbook it uses a fanless design very awesome! amzn.to/2Xr1vet This is modern device that sets the standard for which all devices are working towards it far ahead of its time. Use the best display, is thin and is silent no fans! +The Reviewer You know they both have a similar feel. The surfacebook is more thin and also has more GPU power which I really really like! Its trackpad is among the best in windows trackpad tech but its still not as good as a macbook pro track pad with touch force. If you compare it to a non touch force trackpad there about the same but the thing is the trackpad tech is so advanced on the macbooks there years ahead of the competition. But everything else here if the surfacebook was the same price I would pick it because I like its design and the 2 in 1 concept is starting to improve drastically. If I had to pick one it would still be the macbooks because of there reliability and I actually like OS X.

Due to the fact I want to use both - macOS and Windows, I'm looking forward to watching your review of Windows 10 on MacBook Pro (once it's released for the Bootcamp of the new MacBook Pro). In the meantime, would you be able to test any of the latest Total War titles (ie. Atilla - I don't think Warhammer for macOS is available yet) on the new MacBook Pro 13? I want to see, if I would need to buy the MacBook Pro 15in with the AMD GPU in order to be able to play the newest Total War games with the highest settings. Your help will be greatly appreacited. actually testing the gaming for me is super important so ill be sure to test with and with out the gpu since i also believe in igpus and been promoting them for a while now ill be sure to answer whether its a decent capable device with the igpu. the more expensive model has slightly better iris graphics but also a better cpu with 28watt as opposed to the base model with out touch bar that has 15 watt.

It’s pretty good, although for same price you could get a 15” or 13” MacBook Pro which are quite good. 2015-2019

+Hormaz Bhesania I'm thinking of doing a a video called which surface product to buy and it's gonna force me to spend around 3400 to buy all 3 surface products again. As of now my time ran out with this product i don't know why it never dawned on me to review it in Adobe premier not a lot of reviews out there on it. I can tell you it runs Adobe products like premier pro cc alright. It did take me an hour to compile this video when I export it. On a MacBook Pro for instance that uses a 28watt CPU unlike the 15 watt in this surface book is a lot more powerful with video editing and as we now know Adobe products rely on the CPU heavily. Would of been nice to have that 28 watt CPU but it turns out the surface book is really thin even for a 15 watt device it's the most thin I have ever seen so perhaps fitting a 28 watt CPU is just harder.

if you have not got the surface book yet I recommend it to you you will have full capable device with you on the go any power projects you need to do you can DO on the surface book I too do similar work with adobe CC and I run CINEMA 4D on my surface pro 4 and I can do major projects on the go they are awesome device surface 3 - Pro 4 and surface book.

+Nathan Wong always grab more ram first as 4gb is not enough. 8gb is minimum now if you wanna play games and have a fast laptop. as for the cpu only get the i7 on the desktop as its much faster on a desktop but on laptops you can't even tell the difference from i5 to i7.

+代猛 have you had a chance to watch the full review? Around 16mins I start to talk about the pluses and negatives of the device. I'll be frank I really like it. But it needs to be issues free for a price that high. It's more expensive than a MacBook and those used to be the most expensive devices but they had unparalleled stability.

+Akoreol so far there are compromises with this device if they can find a way to have a strong good tablet and a strong good laptop that's stable than the high price wouldn't be so bad but it's another story. It's a great device but the second gen will be perfect!

+Lazar Vlaović Great Question! so spec wise the most important upgrade is the ram to 8gb. 8gb for development should be good but if you have enough money to spare I would say grab a macbook pro as it is almost as thin as the air but uses a much stronger cpu and faster ram which will be beneficial. all the upgrades you can get for the air will seldom improve performance only the ram is worth upgrading. upgrade storage if you feel like your gonna run out. other than that just do the ram only as 4gb is hardly enough for a dev but may be ok if your a regular consumer who wants to surf the net every now and than. the i7 upgrade I had it and its not worth it because the performance increase it gives you is hardly noticeable if not noticeable at all. and it cost a fair deal amount. the i7 is worth it if your upgrading on a desktop. if you upgrade your macbook air to an i7 it will run hotter, eat more battery and potential crash and be unstable so try to avoid that.

+Lazar Vlaović Since I had the pro and the air I will give you some good insight to keep in mind. the air uses smaller compontents that are weaker equivalents to the air. another words the parts are smaller and have less performance because of it. an example is the cpu and the ram both run slower by about 30-40% and its clear if you view how much electricity each laptop uses youll see that the air has the 15 watt cpu called the U series and the pro uses the 28 watt cpu which is an M series or QM Series if you have the 15". for instance when im video editing and I have huge chunks of video and I scroll through these chunks in a timeline My air would lag but the pro with the same ghz speed i5 ran much faster because it could keep up. I encourage you to get the pro becuase it has more ports like the hdmi which is useful. overall its faster ram, cpu and igpu will improve gaming and development of the software allowing you to wait less during compile times. its got the advanced screen.

Nope, just mini DisplayPort. You have to buy a mini DP to HDMI cable.

I Got the Pro 4 core M and I push it with my 3D projects and I don't feel no heat nor slow downs it is an AWESOME device ;-D

actually surface pro 4 is an awesome device! I wish I kept mine! its a better value anyway! surfacebook is cool though as well. Did my video answer all your questions?

+vaishnav kumar C in some of my more later videos I may repeat my self a little bit but than go a lot more in depth. Can you check to see if I have this same problem with my latest two videos?

+vaishnav kumar C I think I'm committed to making my videos shorter it seems like there just too long. I'll find a happy medium bare with me.

I'm fine with long videos but things that are repeated make it long unnecessarily Depth is really good and needed

Just watched 2 latest videos and I can easily say they're your best videos so far No repeating of information No weird text running around on the screen But at some parts when you talk for abt 8-10 mins looking at the camera, I suggest you to show the OS or the product's design while talking at the same time (same information too)
