I love how Anthony has preached the importance of hydrating tighter curls more often and it makes sense. I have been doing WnG for over a year now about 6 days a week. I don't over complicate my style so it's easy to do and honestly it's therapeutic. Before I had a terrible scalp issue so I love to keep my scalp as clean as my body. No more scalp issues, my hair is fuller and stays soft, it never tangles.

Yeah as I've gotten older my scalp does not like products at all. So I shampoo every week with a scalp-specific shampoo. If my scalp feels too sensitive or itchy or tight between shampoos. I have a scalp-specific mist and gel that I can use.

I like swimming and the spa..so. 😅😅😅....I don't shampoo, detangle or style every day though. I use a gentle chelating non-sulfate shampoo for chlorine and co-wash for salt water. I've never been swimming daily in fresh water. However, my naturally high porosity short hair does airdry very quickly.....

I did his method when I first began my journey and my hair thrived. I did a wash and go no less than five times a week. I cowashed, as opposed to shampooing. I probably shampooed every three weeks. It’s not as crazy as it sounds. If you are using somewhat clean products, and cowashing with a decent conditioner every day, there is no build up of junky product and dirt! As I’ve searched for the magic solution to a wash and go that lasts 7 days, my hair has been far less happy and healthy. So, I’ve found myself doing my wash and go more often. I tried twice a week, and that’s better. This week, I’ll do it three times. Just doing some trial and error as far as frequency. Something tells me every other day is going to be the optimal frequency. And, Jen is right. As you get better at the technique and your hair becomes fully hydrated, it takes no time at all. I can cowash, section and style in less than 30 minutes.
@sparker7768
@sparker7768 9 месяцев назад
After watching several of Dickey's videos (including a Q&A), it seems that the daily "wash" IS actually a cowash, and then you wash with a shampoo 1/week (or spaced out, like you're doing). This is working better for me also, vs struggling for a 7-day w&g set which always ends up dried out (for my hair).

I used to wet my hair almost daily back in 2015 when I did my big chop and I retained so much length within the 1st year. I honestly feel as if I gained all my length. My hair was never crispy dry and it was easy to wash and detangle since it was always moisturized. I definitely feel like the constant moisture is very helpful and even if you don't do this method every day, I feel like every 2-4 days is ideal as well.

Thanks for sharing this! I was iffy about the "wash everyday" part of Anthony's philosophy until he explained that just like straight hairs wash every day to eliminate oily build up, kinky hairs should wash everyday to encourage hydration because we *don't* get the oily build up that would help with moisture retention. This made sense to me, so I *finally* tried the Dicky method for a week and got *excellent* results! He also says, the more you do it the better your hair will react. For me, it's all true!!! I'm 3 months and going strong! Although, I could not do this successfully on a daily basis without my *bonet hair dryer* ! I "bake" my curls for 30 minutes then I'm good to go for the day! BTW I must admit that sometimes my curls look so great the next day that I skip a wash day now and then. But can't go longer than 3 days without some kind of wash, cowash or rinse of my hair.

His philosophy has quite a few differences from BGC. I’m not sure where y’all are getting that their philosophies are that similar. 1. With your tight curl pattern, he would recommend you cowash daily and use a no-suds cream shampoo once a week. For example, his No Suds Cleansing Cream Shampoo or the As I Am Coconut Co-wash which is inferior to his cream shampoo (my opinion). He would not recommend you putting suds in kinky hair except like once every 3 months as a treatment to remove buildup. He doesn’t recommend using them on a regular basis for your hair type. He doesn’t care if it’s a sulfate free shampoo. If it suds at all, he suggests you don’t use them but about once every 3 months. He said that if kinky hair is cowashed daily and using a no-suds shampoo once a week, you should never need suds. BGC tells us to use sulfate free shampoos that bubble/suds up every 7-10 days. They do not think a no suds cream shampoo is cleansing enough and that you should only use them when your hair isn’t really dirty. Like for day 3-5 hair to refresh your style. They don’t recommend daily cowashing and instead told us to use the steam from the shower to fluff hair. 2. A LOT of Hair Rules products have silicones in them. His No-suds cream shampoo has a silicone and he’s saying to use that once a week. His quench conditioner has 4 silicones. The two ingredients ending in oxane are silicones. So essentially, he’s telling you to put silicones in your hair everyday except maybe once every 3 months when you use a suds shampoo as a treatment to remove buildup. He recommends Hair Rules Aloe Grapefruit Purifying Shampoo which is sulfate free and has no silicones as a treatment for kinky hair to remove buildup. BGC doesn’t recommend products with silicones at all unless you’re gonna be using heat to blow-dry/flat iron. The reason is that silicones will act as a sort of heat protector. Aisha has said a shampoo with silicone can’t remove buildup. 3. He pushes hair versatility. Wearing wash and go’s AND wearing it straight. He said it’s fine to come in and get a flat iron once a month. Because if you’re following his philosophy and doing daily wash and go’s and staying away from suds, you shouldn’t get any heat damage because your hair will be hydrated and not dried out. He said heat damage comes from dry hair. And you get dry hair by not doing wash and goes frequently and using suds shampoo too often. He said 4c hair needs to be cowashed daily. He said your hair should be it’s own heat protectant and you can’t buy a heat protector in a bottle. Aleise has said natural hair cannot be versatile and doesn’t recommend straightening it. She also told us to use a sulfate-free suds shampoo to remove buildup before straightening. This is a no-no with Dickey. You’re drying the hair out before straightening it which may cause heat damage. Edit: Also, Aisha said she got heat damage recently. She said she was doing too much. Not sure what that means. Her hair was most likely dried out from only washing it every 5-10 days. Dickey does not recommend that hair type sitting for that long without washing. It’s gonna dry out. 4. Dickey doesn’t cut hair curly because you can’t see all the ends. He cuts for health. BGC rarely talks about the health of your ends. They focus on shape. They don’t recommend cutting hair blown out if you’re gonna wear wash and go’s. These are pretty big differences to me. I have quite a few of his products but I love sulfates. His No-suds cream shampoo is the best I’ve ever tried. It takes some getting used to but as I cowash daily and really agitate my scalp and hair as if I’m really washing it, I find I don’t need a stronger shampoo with suds. I just like bubbles and I like how sulfate shampoos open up the cuticle more. I have his quench conditioner which is sooo good. I don’t care if it has silicones. It feels good on my hair. I’m trying to stick with his hair philosophy and see if works for me.
@britjj5126
@britjj5126 9 месяцев назад
@@Mocha_Dimples I love sulfates too. I used to co wash back in the day but no longer as my hair and scalp actually behaves better when I shampoo and condition (with a moisturising brand) every 3 days. I clarify once a month with something like heads and shoulders. Aisha is the one with bleach blonde hair right? That probably also contributed to the damage. Bleach on natural plus heat will definitely damage it over time and she was getting it done every so often.
@clairedaniels1877
@clairedaniels1877 9 месяцев назад
@@britjj5126 Yes, she’s the one with the blonde hair. I’m gonna experiment with his No Suds Shampoo and see if it works. I’ve done only cream shampoo before and didn’t like it. It seemed like my hair wanted the suds.
@Chromagens
@Chromagens 9 месяцев назад
Yes Dickey is a clear inspiration for Aeleise (she credits him) but their philosophies are pretty different. I mean generally you can see older curly methods influencing newer ones, hairstylists or not. And to me BGC/CIK clearly also has curly girl method (Lorraine Massey specifically) influence also. I think the silicone fear is too much but likewise the aversion to sudsy shampoo

@Chromagens ooh yes Lorraine Massey is another one of the early curly hair/natural hair advocates. She was adamant about not dyeing coiled hair if I remember correctly. I appreciate that though she has Caucasian curls, she worked with a natural hair care specialist when she wrote her book with the section for natural hair care. Another one is Teri LaFlesh. Wrote a book back in the day which had some principles similar to Massey.

Your hair looks fabulous. I have gotten my wash and gos down to about 30 minutes. That includes my shower self care routine. I usually do mousse only wash and gos using one of the mousses from The Doux. I only use gel if I want to skip a few days of washes. With just the mousse, it only takes about 10 minutes of diffusing to get my hair dry enough to get out the door. What I love about the (almost) daily wash and gos is my hair doesn't have time to get tangled and I don't suffer as much breakage. Thanks for sharing your journey.

If I tried to use gels with tons of hold, they dried my hair out too much. When I switched to his method, everything just got easier. Camille Rose Cleansing Milk was a game changer. It's gentle enough for daily use. Bc my hair is fine and hi po, I plop and then hit it w the dryer and I am done. Once you master it, it is truly liberating!! So the prospect of ever going back to a strand by strand type of natural hair styling makes me itch.😂😂😂😂

Looks gorgeous and I have tried his method before. The daily washing wasn’t bad but the drying before leaving work got annoying. It’s why I stopped because leaving the house with soaking wet hair in 20 degrees was not an option 🥴I’ve always felt BGC method and Dickey method were similar. Idk, my hair is doing fine with no butters and oils. I actually stopped the oils in the 80’s when Oprah’s hair stylist said the same. Her hair was gorgeous back then, although relaxed, still gorgeous with shine. So no oils for me since 1985

I stopped oils and butters and grease due to my trichologists but they told me to keep my deep conditioner weekly and leave in conditioner daily. This works well for my hair and scalp. I think that there are so many different methods as there are so many different scalp and hair type combinations. Some people can get away with washing every 4 weeks... meanwhile my scalp be trying to scalp me. Lol!😅 I also like to swim, exercise, sweat and get muddy outdoors....my lifestyle does not suit certain...um...soft lifestyles. Lol! Oh and the airconditioning at my workplace dries my hair out!!

Beautiful! I have known, since I went back to loose natural a year ago after 14 years in locs, that my hair loves, LOVES water, so it got a good spraying every day (to where i was leaving the house with moderately damp hair every day). But, coming across the Anthony Dicky method "changed" my life. Especially when he instructed to get the cheap &*(&(* for the daily "washes" between wash days, so that I can use as much conditioner as I have hair, LOL! Let me tell you. After a week, I went from a pickle ball sized wad of hair down to a few strands at the end of a wash and style session. I have not picked up a comb or a detangling brush in a few weeks. Almost makes me feel like I have locs again. LOL. I do the method most days, but sometimes I skip a day. There will also be times that I do more protective styles like twists. Another great piece of advice he gave as to wash your hair at night if mornings were not it. The fact I do not have to worry about working out or swimming anymore, and that those work outs fall into an every-other-day schedule makes this even better. My hair surprised me. My coworkers already told me they were a bit jealous of my 4c curl definition, but this Anthony Dicky method took that to a whole other level.

But having longer, denser hair, I would need to wake up at 4am to make it to work by 7. Right now my wash day is 3hrs from start to finish. Plus you can adjust how often you do it to suit your lifestyle. 💖 I’m super excited that you’re trying it out too! 🥰🤗 Lastly, I started connecting them dots too and the there seems to be some serious similarities. Definitely. I trust the professionals I see on a regular basis. Not the online ones as much. Heck, I have insomnia and someone online suggested Cannabis derivatives...went to see my pharmacist yesterday and she knows my medical history and she said absolutely do not take cannabis derivatives for me. Lol! I love your current stylist by the way she is amazing. Reminds me of my Aveda stylist. He puts up with all my home disasters and hair anxieties and he's fun. My trichologists only care about the health of my hair and scalp....but they do boring serious health conscious hairstyles. Lol! Trichologists were horrified about my bleached highlights. I was having an anxiety attack...age 41 and never bleached my hair before....My stylist was like ok everyone deep breathe..she is not coming back bald-headed. Lol! I did shave a mohawk but it's now grown back!! I can only attribute that to me swimming and wetting my hair all summer and September. Lol!

I'm a swimmer so wet hair every day is a thing for me. Oddly my hair doesn't suffer but I do prep before and after swimming. Wet with tap water and conditioner before. put on two swim caps for the cholrine. Seawater swimming just jump in. lol!🙈 Co-wash and condition and leave in conditioner after..until the next day. Caveat if you spend more than 15 mins swimming in the sea with brunette hair covering you hair. UV rays can damage your hair. Blondes need to cover their hair at all times. I have a friend who has very pale seethrough skin ( yes you can see all her veins, mean while the majority of medical staff can't find mine. 🙈 I'm medium brown skin) and strawberry blonde hair she wears a hat and SPF while snorkeling at the beach and in winter in the middle of the city. No tan for her.....I've never even seen her in a fake one. Lol!

I think the impracticality of a daily stylist that requires to wet the hair hair down is why bgc has said 4-10 days (depending on your hairs needs & climate) is good enough for most, also considering lifestyle factors (job, responsibilities). Bgc are women -- moms and have been partnered, i do wonder if that factored into the the divergence in philosophy I think exposed hair in the shower, using steam to reactivate products in the hair is generally good as the in-between of a wet down/cowash/shampoo and nothing at all, especially when most of the products are humectants.

Hey Girl J. I'm here rescuing my hair from summer abuse/neglect/crochet braids. Lol! No more daily wash-and-go's for me. Lol! I had to switch it up because I was getting that hair fatigue that everyone gets. So I bleached it dyed it and had a bald fade Fro-hawk and fell back in love with my 4c fragile coils. Relieved that my Aveda stylist didn't let me become bald-headed. Lol! Yeah, I know about Antony Dickey and Hair rules. I went natural in December 2009. It's protective style season. Lol! My edges crown and hairline and coloured ends need recovery cause winter is coming!! Lol! Oh no sis we don't use expired products since 2019....heck, I don't even put anything on my scalp but shampoo and water-based specific scalp products!! Yes I don't put raw oils or butters or grease or conditioner on my scalp on my scalp. Girl, if baby won't sleep guess who is coming in the bathroom with me. Lol! Heck my granny used to put me in the shower with her. Lol! I clarify and chelate my scalp and hair once every 4-6 weeks. Otherwise, I have a gentle scalp shampoo that won't completely strip my scalp or strands. I moisturise my hair every single day in the summer in my loose wash and go. Whether it's a co-wash from swimming or drenching it in refreshing mist or leaving it in. sometimes I'll stretch it before bed with two or three ponytails or french braids but I will always moisturize. I moisturise the same way in the other seasons but I just don't style my hair every day. Deep conditioner and leave in will be prised from my cold dead hands. Lol! did you not know children have super hearing. Baby heard you in the shower and went to sleep listening to the water running. Lol! wait till you open a snack...kids will magically appear from nowhere.

Definitely invest in a big hooded dryer and diffuser. I have naturally high porosity hair so it dries really quickly. Thank the lord...even in winter. Everyone else who has thick and long hair who doesn't live in the desert, tropics or sub tropics needs a dryer for at least 45 minutes. Even when I had box braids in the 90s in the Caribbean, I would tell my moma to bring out the handheld blow dryer because she'd be saying you gona catch a cold sleeping with those wet braids! She even said it to me last month. I'm 42. Lol! I asked her if she drank her water instead of minding me and wet braids. Lol! She be getting dehydrated!!

I have been doing the Anthony method since before Anthony Dickey cos it was what we all did in the 80s in Cape Town SA and it worked. Then along came the whole natural hair vibe and people said 'plop', just mist your hair, hygral fatigue, etc. We all followed but my curl wasn't popping. Then I saw all the buzz about Anthony Dickey's way and I watched his vid and thought but this is what I used to do way back.
@marleyhill34
@marleyhill34 9 месяцев назад
Back in the 90s in school in the Caribbean, the girls would wet their hair every day, and the swimmers and beach goers... I was not in the category. Lol! I was to busy studying and trying to survive to be doing all of that. Now I went to see trichologists and they told me to moisturize my hair every day. It was difficult at first but once I got into the hang of it, doing quick daily styles or styles like flat twists that I can wet/dampen every day and still wear as a style, it's so much easier and not damaging! I only apply styling products once a week though I have fine hair and a sensitive scalp..my scalp will not like gel and mousse every day or every other day. It tolerates leave-in mists and leave in conditioners enough but I still don't put those directly on my scalp. I have a specific scalp shampoo for once a week and a specific scalp mist and gel for every day.

@@marleyhill34 in the 80/90s there were no products specifically for anything upwards of type 2 hair. I remember we used to leave our conditioner on our hair for hours and sometimes our hair would air-dry and so we just left it when there was no time for a roller set or bad weather and if you had no dryer. Wash and go with conditioner was a great option. This was as far back as 1980 when I was 12 .... I remember all the big girls did it. And if the big girls did it, I would do it too🤣. Mom had a major fit cos I was using so much conditioner and money was tight back then

YOURE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! They are literally the exact same method. To which I was stunned when he shaded them, or at least the method of curly cuts. Aleise says it in several lives, that she met him in 2010, and it's where she learned how to do wash n gos. The main difference, is BGC teaches you about intention. As in the what, how, and why of haircare! The only thing that I disagree with, is Sooo the hair everyday. He does suggest cowashing in between, but In most stylist, and cosmetology doing the hair can lead to overworking the strands. Especially if the hair is air dried and or if the person has fine/damaged hair

I'm a swimmer and my hair doesn't suffer from daily swimming as much as I thought it would. Only difference is that I don't detangle or re-apply gel and mousse every time I swim. Either shake and go or my hair is in twists. I air dry 90% of the time but I have ultra-fine, high porosity, bleached hair. Other people might have different experiences. Always listen to your hair and scalp. If it doesn't like moisture every day..dont' do it. My scalp doesn't like oil or butters so that rules out all growth oils for me. Lol! No matter if it grows people's hair to their ankles. Lol!

The Anthony Dickey method was both positive and negative for me… let me explain. I found this method years ago. And an incredibly grateful for making my wash and go’s so much easier. I did wash my hair every day for about a year. At first my hair thrived. I could actually just wash, style and go in about 20 minutes easily. I have 4b hair. After a while my hair texture changed. My curls got looser and looser. Soon my hair started to break. I just couldn’t retain my length. It took me a long time for me to realize that I naturally have high porosity hair. And washing it everyday was weakening it. I still use his method to achieve my wash n go’s, but I have wash my hair once or twice a week. As opposed to washing it daily.
