@austinross hey, here's a tip I learned the hard way. Hopefully you are able to find this useful. Try not to pass current through bearings and hinges. Any arc marks that happen on the load bearing surface can make them run like crap or fail/Gall prematurely. Hope this helps man! 🤙
LOL! Was wonder at the beginning of the vid when the grass was gonna catch fire...didn't need to watch long. Glad you got the fire out before disaster.
Top tip. A man can never have to many tools, so long as they don't come from china. A well explained vid as usual, all done with a smile on your face. Regards from England
I always carry one of those plastic hand pump sprayers meant for spraying weed killer on my rig. Keep it full of water and soak down the weeds before starting! Someone else asked why you didn’t just use a grinder, but if you’re like me, I hate grinding! I’ve used that technique for many years because anything that reduces grinding time gets an A+ in my book. I’ve always run a #3 tip in my Victors btw!
Ya I usually have one of those sprayers on my truck but it stopped workin and I just ain’t picked up another one. I had water close and the fore danger wasn’t bad that day so I just chanced it lol
Hell never knew about this trick! Thats awesome! And I agree with you on using what you have at the time. You start learning how to work with what you have and get through it. Met to many people saying "ah I don't have that so I can't do it." I started on ranches with just a Lincoln 125 fc machine a chipping hammer, and a cheap harbor freight grinder 🤣 always figured ways around things I needed.
Great tip! I will try that next time I gotta scarf! I think you should invest in a small 2 gal sprayer. Keep water in it. When you go to make sparks in a brushy/weedy place, just lightly spray the area down before you spark it. Also, when a little fire pops up, you can just quickly spray it and put it out for good :)
Ya I usually have a sprayer on the truck but mine just went down on me and I just haven’t got another one. If the fire danger was higher I would have made sure I had water closer. It has just rained a couple days ago.
I've used carbon rods with a welding machine and compressed air blow gun to wash away welds. Didn't have an arc-air lead at the time. It worked fairly well.
Well, you said it. WASH.. I've never used anything besides a cutting tip, other than the plasma, will a regular cutting tip. I use the lever, just don't push it much, just enough to blow the melt away.. couple hits with the slag hammer and it's done.. Thanks for the video!! And the history and direction!!!
Hey Austin, I really like learning about the welding tips and tricks you provide in your videos. In this video we see you do some welding on a gate. When you pull out your welding leads (ground and stinger) from in front of your machine they are orange... my question is “what welding leads do you use/ recommend?” Thanks! Keep up the entertaining content!
Well brother, I learned something today. I have done my share of scarfing over the years and it never occurred to me to use the mixing knob to regulate the oxygen. So thank you. I will definitely try it out next time. If you see a welder run because of fire its a good one. Lol Should have had water. But, no harm no foul.
Great job Austin. T L C around the farm/ranch is alway a big help to many. It’s great you can trade out like that . Bartering works out well most of the time. Really enjoy your video, thanks for sharing with us. Fred.👍👍👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
A little weed eater might be a good investment, as well as a small water tank for fire suppression/hose down to get everything sopping wet around the weld. Great fast thinking checking inside the barn.
A sprayer bottle thats used to spray pesticides and all that fun stuff full of water with a bit of dish soap is perfect for lightly spraying anything flammable near torch cutting area
How the heck do u stay sooo clean … I’ve been a fabricator for too many years to count … but I can tell you the only day I come home from work clean is the day we have our Christmas party !! Lmao seriously u r amazing u inspire many keep the hard work and videos coming !!!!!!
Man I love working with a torch I can do scroll cuts on plate all day long and making a job look good with a little trigger feathering is just fun for me cool trick though I’ll try it out next time I’m cleaning up some welds
Need to get another spray bottle, I burned a field years ago, really scary, I make sure to always have the spray bottle, I think 2 gals is best, big enough, not to big. Good tip on washing/scarfing off a weld, keep it up.
Nice trick , you mite need to buy a utility truck. Add welder and rig it up with tools . Including air compressor and maybe crane on it too. Love your videos , keep at it .
Stillwater Oklahoma? Where I’m trying to play baseball. But if baseball doesn’t work my backup plan is welding. I’m good with a mig but I’ve never welded stick
This process looks scary but once you try it yourself it's not so bad. It gets tough in really tight spaces. I learned this as a ship fitter making tug boats.
Boy you can move for 1 of us larger guys. Really enjoy your videos. Was that a new shirt or a patch to cover a burn? Thanks for entertaining us and showing new and unusual ideas
I stopped by a place that had a lot of interesting things out on the driveway. Was examining a particular item and the lady told me they were just cleaning the garage and nothing was for sale. Sad !!! 🤔😢
Ok. I watch every Friday night. Tonight I realized that the shirts were for sale. Raced to the website and your already out of the short fat guy shirts.... seems like I'm not alone
Just started watching your channel and I’ve enjoyed it very much thank you. But I have a question, when was the last time you actually worked out on the pipeline? Just curious.
i had a business owner tell another customer when i went in his business something about me,i walked in and spoke to them and headed back to the service department, about 10 feet away i heard him say to the customer,;you see that man there, the customer replied 'yeah, why',i can say this for him,he doesn't buy nothing if he can make it or fix it. another thing about these tools is when you buy at yard sales or sell outs, they may be old but they're better made than these new ones
No, mostly because those machines are not made to hold up to the type of welding done on pipeline jobs. Bigger rod and welding non stop all day. For several days in a row.
hey austin what brand of caps you're using nowdays since cary's is no longer making cap's?! i've try pipeliners cloud but their stuff fits too deep on me and have tried the ones on the welding supplies but after a couple of washes they're too tight on my ears! thanks brother!
I found a pic of your last welding partner andy hess welding down in texas in 1986 wont let me post pics here or I'd show thought you would get a kick out of it.
Yes. Grinding takes longer and is less enjoyable, to me anyway. And grinding also shoots sparks at undesirable areas taking a chance of getting metal in your paint or truck windows.
Using the torch to take off the large chunks of metal is much faster and cheaper. Then use a grinder as needed to clean it up to desirable level. Many people can clean it up well enough with just a torch if you're welding over it again.
