So I found you through John at ASP, and I gotta say, you're the most straightforward, ego-less, normal instructor I think I've come across. No tough guy nonsense, no clear push to be macho, etc. I really dig it. This will help me a lot with zero'ing my red dot. I'm horrible with this.
Thanks for all the help with the videos and tutorials. I try to catch any video on YT that comes up in your course and I learn so much. It's hard to get into your classes at the moment but I hope to get in one next year.
I have a brand new FN 502 (22LR) with a Vortex Red Dot that I'm going to zero in this weekend. It's my first time ever doing this. I've sighted in a rifle before, but never a pistol. Fingers crossed. Seems pretty straight forward though. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I’m a newbie to the competition shooting world in 🇨🇦 and enjoy it tremendously to me it’s the most fun you can have with you pants on lol, I’ve recently installed a 🔴 and have been struggling to get used to it and getting it zeroed in, I’m gonna head to the range and try this out thanks for the info
Basically just did this. 25 yards seemed excessive for me. I did test and reconfirm after initial zero...and I used the carry ammo I use to do the zero, not range ammo. They both seemed to be close enough. Carry ammo ( Federal HST 147) is spot on and range ammo (Federal 115 American Eagle FMJ) was close enough.
The other unique thing about a 10 yard zero is its almost identical to an 85 yard zero and is right on at 10 yards also. Only real difference is at 100 yards the 10 zero is .1 inches lower then 85 yard zero at 100. This is with 9mm 124 grain HST. So with 85 or 10 yard zero the most you will be off from 0 to 100 yards is 2.3 inches. Check out Federals ballistic calculator as its all right there.
Well at the range set her up like you said and holly shit did that work awesome wish I would have watched your video 1200 rounds ago I was almost ready to chucked that 🔴 in the garbage, but everything fell into place and made total sense THANKS
Nice, I just learned more from your 8 min video than I have watching 3 other 12 min or longer video. Any chance you will be teaching any classes in Alabama?
LOOWB RUBBLE Hi Loowb. How’s the rmr07 working for you? I’m just curious because I’m having my slide milled right now and having the same rmr installed. At 58, my eyes aren’t what they used to be either. Thanks.
After wasting about a thousand rounds I’m not sold on the rmr. For one, I can’t get a decent zero to save my life and my groupings are minute of barn door. When I switch back to an iron sight gun I’m drilling the x ring all day long
I’m just starting with dots (been shooting irons for 2.5 decades) and my experience was the exact opposite. I love the dot and I’m more accurate at 15 yards with it then I am at 7 with irons. And I’m a LOT faster. Like pretty easily mag dumping my Shadow Systems 19 into a 6” circle at 10 yards faster.
@ModernSamuraiProject I did this with my Holosun507C on a milled Glock 19 Gen5 and at 10yrds holy shit I’ve never been more accurate. I just got a RDS because I’m legally blind without my glasses and I want to be able to make accurate shots should I lose them in a self defense encounter. This video and the one from Caleb(I think is how you spell it) of Gun Nuts Media seriously helped me so much. But I saw a video of some guys(Karl?) who had picked up a ransom rest and while they said yes you won’t ever be as accurate as the rest, the point of it is because your trigger control could suck ass and now your shots aren’t a few inches off they’re actually feet off at slightly farther distances & closeup dep on what distance you zero for. I’ve been watching all your videos and seriously your content and channel is absolutely amazing. Would love to get some training from you. Thank you so much for all the information.
I am having my M&P milled for the Holosun 507C and I have been watching your videos which make a lot of sense compared to others I'v seen. I would like to take one of your classes how do I find one in Arizona? Thanks
Quick question (as I was unclear) - you said that at 25-yards, the bullet is hitting 1-inch low. If so, why aim at the bottom of the head A-zine to hit the middle of the box? Thanks!
@@ModernSamuraiProject Ok, that would make sense. I have zeroed my CO at 25-yards; I will re-evaluate at 10-yards, and see how it goes. Thank you for the response.
Having a hard time seeing how your impact could be any lower at 10 yards than the vertical distance between the bore and the red dot. Lets say that distance is 1", how exactly is that bullet supposed to dip down to impact a foot low at 10 and then be right on at 25? Is this the magic JFK bullet?
I have just started watching you and have just gotten my first red dot. My short history with it is the sight has to be canted downward 30⁰ and right 10⁰ just to get the dot on the glass. At this angle, the bottom half of the sight window is blocked from view by the rear face of the sight housing. After adjusting to maximum up and left, the point of inpact at 3 yards is 5"-6" low and 2"-3" right. I sent it back to the manufacturer and they responded that it was "fine", "in specs", they did nothing, and returned it. Last week I remounted the "inspected" site and the substantially obscured site window and points of impact are exactly the same as before I sent it in. If I had limitless adjustment range, I could zero it. I believe the emitter is projecting the dot incorrectly. I know I am a novice with red dots, but, is there a better way to descrbe the situation to the service department so they will actually test and fix it?
I kinda suck at weak hand shooting. My finger knuckles were broken in my youth and the trigger fingers is deformed a bit. Could I still do this process - just strong hand alone ?
When he says off-hand, he’s meaning standing and shooting with a normal grip, not using a bench, or anything to stabilize your weapon, not your non-dominant hand. Hope that helps.
i have astigmatism in my right eye, (dominant eye ) do you have any knowledge of 1 red dot being better than another with astigmatism, also with my left eye i see the dot perfectly, can you you aim and shoot effectively with non dominant eye, thanks
First off, I would like an on / off switch. When I am going to carry. I would turn it on before I lieve. Having the sight on while on my shelf is a dead battery to me. The sight is no good if the battery dies. The auto on would be additionally good feature. My first red dot is on a Sig Mosquito. Could not get a fair trial. The Sig failed every mag. Even after returning it to Sig two times at my expense, $80.00 each. I now have a Canak 9mm. First problem is finding the dot. Iron sights you have an immediate reference. You are looking down the slide and immediately Aline the sights. I also had a (maybe still have) adjusting the sight alignment. They put a slot alignment and locking screws. Very tiny. I could not find a screw driver small enough. The one I thought was small was only rubbing on the fixture around the screw and moving the adjustment screw. I was getting frustrated with my shot pattern being off. Finally I called Vortex. They sent an adjustment kit (free). Then it was not working right. I just could not get it right. I used a barrel laser alignment tool. I could see where I was moving the dot. I have only shot a couple of IDPA matches to be confident with my adjustment. When I talked to "Vortex". I suggested they replace the slotted screw with Allen screws. Much easier to a-line Allen wrench than a slot screwdriver. His comment was like it fell upon deaf ear. The battery kept dropping out as I attempted to mount the red dot on the mounting plate. I used transparent packaging tape to hold it in place. Worked great. I just cut the excess off after mounting and securing it. One thing the RED DOT and laser pointing dot showed me. I was shaking more than I realized. I am 76 and not a exercise person. I just started working my arms with weights and my fingers with a 7 lb "Cando Digi-flex" finger grip exerciser.
If you're still into red dots, look into a Holosun or an RMR. Both have several YEARS worth of battery life, so you never have to worry about turning the optic on or off. Holosun also has an auto shut off feature, so realistically you will be getting over 5 years of life out of a single battery.
Mr. "J". I just read were you will have a 2 day class near me!! $500.00 isn't much more then 1K of ammo. On Oct. 11-12 you'll be in Gulfport MS. I was born there and I live in the Mobile AL area now. (just a 2 hour or less drive. I drive that far just to play the casinos! lol) In the description of the course you say we need to bring 1K rounds. Is that all self defense rounds or will range rounds be OK? I think I heard on one of your videos that you zero with carry ammo. I have the money...the hard part is being away from my companion for that long. She has MS and doesn't drive, besides we only have one car anyway. I'll work it out. I have butterflies in my stomach just thinking I will be taken a class from you or some of your crew!! I'm 73 and been shooting RDS for about two years now. I'm effective, tactfully as my instructor/friend would say, and in the little locale range matches, I'm pretty good at not shooting the hostage, lol.
Hello Scott. I recently zeroed my RMR at 10 yards (glock 19). But I found that my dot actually significantly dips below my 1/3 co-witness sights (rear sight behind optic). It means that when I shoot with the dot, I actually tilt my gun up and my rear sight lines up with the base of the front sight blade. Is this normal?
I understand zeroing 10 yards. That is wear I had my zeroed at. But, doing it free standing? Many times my trigger finger doesn't do what it's suppose to do!!!..lol, but I'll try it when I get my Smith 2.0 back from local gunsmith. He's milling my slide for a 507C. I've had it on the back of my slide for about 4 months. He talked me into getting off the fence and "get it done".
So, although this was six years ago, when you put this out, hopefully you’ll see this or someone could answer this. I’ve heard that the lazy man’s way initially before you really get out to the range to get the dot at least on target and within center mass or within that center area of the body, you can lollipop as I was told or slave, the red dot to the top of your front side so it looks like a little head sitting on the body kind of thing is that true just to get it dialed in before you get out of the range and a general Area of focus I guess without truly doing the 10 yards initially so the clarify slaving the red dot to the front side initially just for argument sake is that OK slaving it you want to get out there and fire and so you know exactly where it’s going, but is there anything wrong with slaving it initially to kind of get you in the ballparkand we’re talking not more than 10 yards that you would be probably focused on anyway
I don’t know if you’ve answered this before, but you mentioned in the video you zero by shooting off hand. Why off hand instead of dominant hand supported?
Bcos that day, we were all awaiting for non-confident vote inside parliament House, but afternoon since recently we realize 48 ran and asked refuge with me, o allowed, but didn't know the balance were killed inside parliament.
Hi Scott, I want to take your class in North Carolina on March 2023, but it has a pre-requisite of taken a class on red zero torture. How can I take care of this? what do you recommend me?
I would like your thoughts on having the rear iron sights in front of the dot, instead of behind it, and also do you zero with carry ammo or training ammo?
Tim Petrillo Don’t really care. Personal preference. With target focus I don’t see my irons. I zero with my carry but my training ammo prints the same.
If your friend zeroed his RDS at 25 yrs, he should by no way a ft low. His max a bit less the distance between the dot and his muzzle. This would be about an inch low.
I recently saw a video about zeroing a red dot and/or laser that seemed like a better idea. You want the dot to be parallel to the barrel/point of impact of your bullet. Same with a laser if you’re running one. This way you never have to re-zero based on distance. You will always hit an inch below your dot if it’s parallel. That would be the case regardless of distance.
i gotta ask you to explain this more and maybe link to the vid because it makes no sense to me. The bullet will always start dropping the instant it leaves the barrel relative to a perfectly straight line drawn out the barrel. Whatever optic you are using starts out some distance above the barrel, so you have to sight in with the front sight a little proud, so the sight line and barrel line meet at some point. If you start at parallel then the point if impact will continue dropping with each yard you get further away from the target.
How is it possible to hit one foot below POA at 7 yds when zeroed at 25 yds? Two possibilities, either his height over bore is over one foot (not likely) or he/she doesn’t know how to shoot.
Sir, I can tell you for a fact, if zero at 20-25 yards results in a foot low at 7-10 yards, your barrel indexing, (Lock up) is completely out of spec. It should be apx. 3 inches. Not trying to challenge your experience, however, you are not quite understanding the mechanical workings of barrel to slide/frame alignment. you have a problem with your gun. Period. the difference in poi should be, at the velocities or the 9mm, not much more than the difference in height of the center of the red dot above the centerline of the bore. this is the offset. and is an industrial standard to sight for the difference. This offset is one of the biggest reasons to strive for the lowest mounting of the sight as possible. The higher the centerline of the sight, the more severe the offset. KnifeMaker
Mike L If you listen again I said someone reach out to me and told me his gun did that. Was he embellishing? Absolutely. At 7 yards you will probably have a .5 inch drop with a 25 yard zero.
Maybe 5th or 11th floor, A pure cyborg/ggk samurai lives, he just do work, to control yoirnearloernseniornpkr, yourself, and me both mneing MiM, so all hacked.
@@ModernSamuraiProject I just did and hit a one inch circle twice from 5yrds with a 25yrd zero, uploaded the results. BTW, love your videos, they've been a great help to many of us. Hopefully I get to take one of your classes.
Im gonna tell you what... I thought i was going to do the 25y zero. Well, almost 100 rounds later, i agree with Jedi. " i can't see shit." I get the 25y zero, but it is a very "humbling" experience when you try to confirm at "real" 25. And I can not do it. Not with my old eyes. 25 yards, that's a young man's game. I absolutely understand why the young riders call for that. Us old fuckers, well, not so much. It really sucks, getting old. You young riders will understand, one day. You want that 25-yard zero. Well, boys, go get it.its yours.
When you say "off hand" your not meaning your non shooting hand right? like Im right handed so my "off hand" would be shooting with my left hand. You meant shoot standing instead of bench shooting, right?
25yds off a bench with a rest/bag, all day, every day. When it's your job, you don't have much choice. But my EDC and competition handguns run the same zero. 25yds tells you a lot more than 10yds will. And don't just start at 25yds. I zero fast at 5, walk back to 10 or 15 and then do 25. It will take less rounds and time. In terms of, "I can't see the shots at 25yds", that's a good thing. You don't want to see the shots while you're laying down that group. Bring a pair of cheap binos - that will more than do the trick. I keep and old pair of binos and an old range finder in my truck. The last thing I'd say is, 10yds is going to be OK. Most guys would be fine with that. But if you compete, and you show up to a match with a cruel and unusual 50yd plate rack, you're gonna have a bad day, mmmkay.
@@ModernSamuraiProject Sorry Scott, didn't mean to come off that way. Was hoping to take your class last April but scheduling got hectic that month. Really impressed with the content you're putting out there.
My opinion might be stupid on a old video but why would you want to shoot a pistol at 25 yards to begin with . That’s a long ass ways away . Maybe I’m just blind and lazy . Probably both, but at that point I’m going for something with a scope . 10 yards (30 feet) plenty
