How Identity-Driven Narratives Impact Mental Health Care

Socio-political bias in mental health care is growing. Training programs, especially in the counseling profession, are inculcating trainees in the oppressor-oppressed narrative. Leading professional organizations in social work and psychology are taught, for example, to impose an identity-driven narrative on the client. Instead of treating each client as a unique individual and working collaboratively, the social-justice therapist reduces them to avatars of gender, race and ethnicity. How are these trends affecting practitioners in training in the real world? How are patients affected by this new philosophy of mission? What kinds of remedies exist or need to be developed?
Join Genspect’s Stella O’Malley with Sally Satel, MD, psychiatrist and AEI Fellow, Andrew Hartz, PhD, therapist and Founder of Open Therapy Institute, and whistleblowers Leslie Elliott Boyce and Suzannah Alexander.
This event will be recorded.

I left my Clinical Mental Health Counseling program (2018) 6 weeks in because my professor told me that “your life experiences don’t count because you’re a white woman.” I told my advisor this and they just stared blankly at me and said they couldn’t do anything about it.

This is Suzannah. I’m so sorry you experienced that. I’m also glad you didn’t waste any more than six weeks. I hope you got a full refund.

@@DiogenesInExileHello Suzannah. Unfortunately, I was unable to receive a refund for the semester. I then went on to pursue a Masters in Forensic Psychology (which was not a liberal program) and work in a residential behavioral health facility for adolescents and adults. And I’m so lucky to have found a facility that does not believe in the current toxic ideologies.

WTF?! You did right to leave. I was not considered for a prestigious PhD program because halfway through the interview, I was asked about my "thoughts" on "trans rights," and when I said I do NOT ascribe to those beliefs, her whole demeanor changed. Needless to say, I didn't get in, and I know it was the interview because I have the grades and the experience. I'm just not a fan of the Trans Cult.

@@ballerina6767975107 I’m glad that you were able to find a path forward. At the end of the day that’s what you have to focus on or you’d drive yourself crazy. I do think it should be a huge scandal how often colleges and universities take peoples money (and tax dollars) and return this kind of a result. It’s like selling people a car that doesn’t have seats or an engine.

As a retired clinical social worker (retired 2014) - it is sobering to think that were I still working as a therapist today I would not only be in conflict with my licensing and professional organizations, but quite likely risk being sanctioned by them. Simply for being guilty of - "thought crimes" - for subscribing to evidenced based practices like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - rather than bowing to clearly irrational, damaging and evidence free concepts like "affirmation only" approaches to gender dysphoria, and other tenants of Critical Social Justice ideology.

That’s how I stopped being a far leftist. I started doing my own research to try to understand who all of these people they were fear mongers about were. So I sought out Jordan Peterson, Joe Rogan, etc with the goal of educating myself (they were always telling me to educate myself) on things being discussed. I was shocked to learn I was more aligned with these “hateful bigots” (who actually had seemingly very reasonable stances!) than with these judgmental and mean spirited people calling themselves the left. I had to decide if I was now a conservative, or if maybe these people were just plain wrong about almost everything. Found Leslie through the algorithm and I love her!

Why doesn’t Genspect speak before Congress / the Senate on all these issues? Genspect has the intellectual muscle and credibility to do it. It’s time we stand up to this wokeness and pseudo science.
@DiogenesInExile
@DiogenesInExile 2 месяца назад
This is Suzannah. In order to testify before any congress you have to be invited to some extent. It’s not like a school board meeting where you can show up and have an opportunity to speak, (at least in the states I’ve explored). That’s why it is important to citizens to reach out to their lawmakers. When there is enough political momentum, then the congress will ask (or sometimes demand) that people come and speak. They usually ask the most high profile people in their various fields, so right now Genspect is building their credibility, which is a good thing to do if they want to be called to testify in the future.
@zxyatiywariii8
@zxyatiywariii8 2 месяца назад
Yes, one needs to be invited. I was in a cohort of chronic pain patients asked to testify during the height of the opioid epidemic; so hopefully -- if more of us contact our own legislators and ask for this -- Genspect WILL be asked to testify. It's terrifying what's happening to therapy! I'm so grateful I found a good therapist who's not in thrall to the Critical Consciousness ideology. I'm what Social Justice would call "oppressed", and it's true I've experienced racism, but it's a horrible, nihilistic ideology that encourages Outer Locus of Control, and essentially dismisses Inner Locus of Control.

Thank you for making this video I know now it’s not my fault the therapists have been trained in a way where they don’t see my traumas as trauma

I'm not surprised to hear that younger students are more likely to try to toe the line and say what they think the people running the programs and classes want them to say. When you're young you've got much less life experience and you're much more afraid of what people think of you and being called names and having unflattering and potentially damaging labels thrust upon you. When you're older you're more confident in who you are, generally, and you know yourself better and you have the life experience to see around those corners so you aren't as afraid to tell the truth. The fact that students DO think like Suzannah but are afraid to say so is very upsetting, but at the same time it does show that they aren't buying into this they're just saying what they feel like they have to say to get by. I think there is a silent majority and I think it's growing. Unfortunately, I don't think anything is going to come of it until the silent majority stops being silent and starts making real waves. As voters, a silent majority is formidable whether they ever speak up or not because you don't have to say a word to cast a vote. But, when it comes to things like this it's not enough to stay quiet. I'm glad that there are people who are beginning to stand up and say enough is enough, though, and expose what is going on behind the scenes. It's the first step, and a very important one. ETA: Corrected the spelling of Suzannah's name.

leslie's admissions in this video are horrifying. social justice and therapy DO NOT belong together and will just put further stigma and divides between therapists and people who actually need therapy. i have lived in seattle for over a decade so it sadly doesn't surprise me though. this city is being destroyed by a mental health epidemic and THAT is the kind of training therapists are getting....disgusting.

Mental health folks should focus less on casting themselves as the saviors of the world & focus more on actually providing a practical evidence based benefit to their patients (which seems to be too much to ask for many of these folks)

It took your industry 35 years and over 30 psych degree "professionals" to twig there was something slightly odd about my husband. Turned out he is on the autism spectrum. Now, given the history of autism, I'll forgive the first 15-20 years. However, 2009, took the so-called local psychologist who was "expert" in autism 12 sessions and 3 previous diagnoses (1 different dx every 3 weeks) to land on the "autism" dx. Then, off we went to Tony Atwood's "Hearts and Minds" clinic in Brisbane for a formal dx. Yep, autism. Turns out it only took TA (a world expert in the spectrum) 20+ years to dx his own son's autism. Now, women can be m, and vice versa. This industry outdoes the pharmaceutical industry in the money-sucking leech stakes. Glad there are a few sane ones I can follow here.
@zxyatiywariii8
@zxyatiywariii8 2 месяца назад
Wow that's awful! I'm glad he finally got the correct diagnosis. . . but it never should've taken so long, especially because men are more likely to be autistic than women, so that possibility should've been one of the first things they'd screen him for.
@goodgrief888
@goodgrief888 2 месяца назад
Autism is being diagnosed at a much higher rate than it used to be. And people believed it was a childhood issue, in the past. I don’t know what they think happens to these children when they grow up. And all of the adults who didn’t get diagnosed when young are still out there. That being said, I would also be very careful about eliminating trauma induced CPTSD, which can mimic the symptoms of autism with the disregulation and processing emotions issues.
