How Important Is It To Warm Up Your Voice Before Singing? Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
There is so much misinformation, disinformation, incomplete information, and/or plain and simple lack of information on this subject.
Many years ago, I coined the phrase "The Proof is in the Singing" and it couldn't be more true regarding this subject.
Most vocal coaches claim that you shouldn't warm your voice up more than 15 minutes before a performance.
Most vocalists don't warm up at all.
But I say the proof is in the singing.
I'm going to use mine as an example. Often times, I will take a full hour to carefully, slowly, and gently "wake up my voice".
After that, I will start to "lean into the sound", adding volume and weight to it to wake up the voice even more.
Then I will sing the first two songs of my set to get ready.
When I finally hit the stage, I will not immediately belt into the first song or two. I will continue to wake up my voice and get a "lay of the land" to hear how well I can hear myself, how loud the band is, and make sure that I can continue without having to oversing.
This is by far the best way to warm up for a performance.
So come along as Gabbi and I discuss this important subject.

Saw Bruce Springsteen a few weeks back and after 3 hours of singing, at the age of (almost 75), his voice was incredibly strong from beginning until the end. How does one maintain that level of voice strength at 75? Any thoughts?

Bruce has held his own through the years. The kind of belting that he does is very taxing on the voice and he is fortunate that his voice has held out this long. Kudos to Bruce for his long career.

One thing you don’t see Bruce do is jump up in the high registers. That helps a lot. He also just naturally has a lot of power and always has. He doesn’t have a flexible voice, and never did, he always had a big boom type of voice. Johnny Cash was the same way, it was just there.

Greetings Ken Tamplin. Great as usual. You know how they show you what amp and pedals their using and how the knobs are turned to. Well I've never heard of anybody showing how their microphone is set up for them to be comfortable. I've always wondered about that. Especially noticing Elvis and Kenny Rodgers mics seem to be very hot where they don't come close to eating it. I know they're using something. But I don't have a clue . Thank you Sir.

An owner of you program back in the day, but really I'm so autistic that I don't learn the normal way, at 66 I have no delusions of grandure, was over 60 when I got serious about singing. I learn by singing a wide variety of songs. I take a long time to warm up, because I smoked heavily until my mid-30s. My warm up consists of singing old old country songs before I sing rock or newer country that are more demanding. It used to take me 10-20 songs to warm up, now it takes less, sometimes none. I sing karaoke in Nashville on Broadway, and when I'm in my groove can get people dancing or waving their cellphones lit up. A dream job would be 6 months a year hosting Karaoke and singing on a cruise ship. My actual plan is to be a Tropical snowbird and sing for expats in the Philippines, my competition there is the guy that sings don't bogart that joint... My goal is to notch up to singing with a band there. Here in Nashville its impossible, because the cover bands don't really practice. These people can fill in and play with bands they never worked with before. I need strong stage monitoring and thats not always possible. For Karaoke enthusiasts I reccoment Alan Jackson's Bar on Sunday and Monday nights, the host is an actual sound engineer and brings his wireless mics. AJs has a decent sound system for Karaoke as well.

Nothing better, then doing worm ups on a cooler rainy day.😀🌧☔ Yes, an hour to 90 min for me... I usually don't feel ready with less amount of stretching.🎹🎼 When I hit the 45min its where the power start kicking in. Glad to hear its normal, cause at the beginning it really used to drive me nuts. There are so many factors that come into play determine the amount of time one should be spending on warm usp, at that particular day for example. Mastering something simply comes with patience. And love spending hours on tracks. Usually between 60-90 min per song. I wondered what kind the particular one, Gobbi mentioned on here is for leaning into the sound i????

I agree that warming up is very important. For me, it not only gets the voice ready for singing, but it also gets me focused on singing. It prepares me physically and mentally for the work ahead of me.

Agree, warming up is important. I always miss it when I don’t do it, especially on songs where I have to modulate between chest and head right out of the gate. But everyone’s different, and it seems Gabbi and I have very different voices. I will never cease to marvel at people who can warm up for 45 minutes and then be ready for the actual performance. That’s a BIG voice! Mine’s…not big, and my mom’s is the same way (she is classically trained). My warm ups are 10 min tops if I’m doing it right before going onstage. If I go longer than that, my voice is already half done by the time I start the performance. For most performances, I’ll spend 10-20 minutes at least an hour before the show warming up, then just “loosen things up” for a minute or so right before going on. I can even warm up 5 or 6 hours before a show and stay “warm” as long as I don’t take a nap or experience sleep-level amounts of cortisol. I also find that, even more than the warm-up, hydration and physical fitness need to be a big part of my training. I’m just fascinated by “big voice” people. Gabbi rocks!

Hi Ken. Ive been a stutterer all my life. Ive mellowed in recent years, and not as bad as I was, but ive always seemed to sing perfectly since I was a young. Ive been in 2 bands here in Australia and people scratch their heads how I do it without a stutter. My theory is , is that im in rythem with the music, Im not thinking about what to sing (cause its already laid down in my head), and its more flowing. It baffles alot of people. My stutter is numerological aswell, it comes from nervous, anxiety. I actually can stutter while thinking too. Its quite very very weird, but singing is my big release. Im a good writer too and been writing songs for years. Hope your good mate.

On long singing sessions I do full 1 hour warmup, have noticed can sing for a few hours without issue and if I have little time to warm up I do Ken's RU-vid quickstart vocal warmup video exercise. Warming up helps get my voice on point and agree with Ken & Gabi.

I actually think indeed too that it's more about warming up all muscles, but of course, different singing styles need some adaption as well. And yes, his single note was marvelous ❤!

The question is: "is it important to have a strict diet when you sing? In other words, stay away from certain types of foods and drinks? How long must you wait after eating before you can safely sing with confidence?
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 5 дней назад
You don't necessarily need a strict diet, but you should avoid acidic foods or drinks at least for about an hour or so before performing, otherwise you may have problems with reflux.

I used to tour and play live in the 90s, i didnt know how to sing and struggled on the road. Im 60 now and the techniques ive learned watching your channel over the years has helpled immensely. To bad, i didn't take lessons when i was young lad. Warm-up and technique would have made all the difference.

Just curious what your thoughts on this might be. I follow alot of social media singers groups and recently on 1 thread a bunch of vocalists were touting the virtues of eating lays potato chips before singing as the grease helps lubricate the throat. Have you ever come across this? Do you have a favorite food or meal you eat before a performance?
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 3 дня назад
Sounds totally fishy to me, Scott. I recommend refraining from eating at least for an hour and a half before a performance, or you may experience some form of reflux. That can trash your vocal cords and ruin your performance.

Dude....Ken.... Hear me out, please. I recently noticed a bunch of videos on RU-vid of people knocking you. I'd never heard of you, so what I did was I went through your content and I chose 4 random songs to listen to. I wanted to assess you for myself and here's what I found.... Two of the songs I listened to were of you and your band. The other two were studio cuts. I know people are saying they think you're a fraud, but I would've been listening to you, had I not been born in 1981. Everybody has "off" nights, but I can't find anything to complain about. Even your live drummer is on point. And before anybody says I don't know anything about music, you're right. I only grew up playing 7 different instruments and taking pride in some vocals that are worth listening to. Yours are worth it, Ken. I do hate how I can always see your tongue, but that's able to be overlooked. The tongue is important in sounding full or nasal-ish. Keep on rockin' in the free world, brother. If people don't like you, they can pop smoke and leave.

Hey brother. Ignore the crap! 00% of them have never performed live night after night, or even consider all the jobs a concert generates and in a big way are responsible for, you cannot simply cancel every time the lead vocalists has over worked his/her vocal chords, nor do they understand the kind of career killing damage that vocalists deal with. They simply don't comprehend this enormous pressure. Love your enthusiasm, love your program, and love you brother! Jack ~'()'~

Hey, Ken. Just wanted to say, I can't stand these idiots who have been trying to destroy your reputation as a vocal coach. It's clear that you've always done all those high notes whilst reacting to some of the best singers in the world. I can't stand people who try to smear someone who's put in so much work over the years. Much love brother and God bless.
