How Inbred was the Queen?

THE SHY HISTORIAN

Since the Queen, Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom passed away awhile ago, many have asked: could inbreeding be the reason? Since she lived to the age of 96, it is unlikely that inbreeding was the reason for her demise. But this still begs the question: how inbred was the Queen?
In today's video, we will break down through the Queen's immediate ancestry, exposing how inbred some of the members of her family were, including figures such as Queen Victoria and King George.

I think the fact that Edward VII, George V and his two sons Edward VIII and George VI (not to mention Princess Margaret) smoked like chimneys and drank like fishes had more to do with their poor health and early deaths than inbreeding. Both Queen Elizabeth II and her mother the Queen Mum enjoyed a tipple but did not smoke which may explain their long and healthy lives.

Hemophilia is not the result of inbreeding, but rather a random genetic mutation in the X chromosome. As there was no sign of hemophilia in the family before her, it is likely that Queen Victoria was the first to have the mutation. Every daughter had a 50% chance of being a carrier; every son had a 50% chance of having hemophilia. Thus Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Alice was a carrier, her granddaughter Princess Alix of Hesse was a carrier, and her great-grandson Tsarevitch Alexis of Russia had hemophilia. There was no inbreeding in any of their family lines, just the operation of simple Mendelian genetics.

@@bas4903men only need one copy of the hemophilia gene to suffer from hemophilia, women would need two copies of the gene. If a women is a carrier for hemophilia no matter who she married (relative or not) 50% of her sons will have hemophilia. I suppose constantly marrying relatives could increase the chance of a woman suffering from hemophilia. As far as I know (please correct me if I’m wrong)I have not heard of a female descendent of Queen Victoria suffering from hemophilia, for this to happen their father would have to have hemophilia and a mother who is a carrier. Back in the day very few male hemophiliacs live long enough to have children.
@piratesswoop725
@piratesswoop725 9 месяцев назад
@@bas4903That’s not how X-linked genetic diseases work. The only thing inbreeding would do is increase the odds of a daughter being a hemophiliac if her father was a sufferer and her mother was a carrier, giving her a defective X from both parents, which was usually fatal in girls because of the severity. And even if you had a hemophiliac marry a carrier, while all their daughters would be carriers and some hemophiliacs themselves, there’s still only a 50% chance for their sons to get it.

1:56 No, he died because of hemophilia, of which inbreeding is not a cause. It usually crops up in families via spontaneous genetic mutation, especially in cases of older men having children. Queen Victoria’s father was in his 50s when she was conceived. Leopold wasn’t ill because of inbreeding, his was ill because his mother was spontaneously born a carrier of the hemophilia gene
@codename495
@codename495 9 месяцев назад
There are spontaneous instances as well as inherited. This is because once someone is born with the gene, spontaneous or not they pass that gene down. Add to that inbreeding which increases the likelihood of consanguinity leading to the disease rises exponentially. One or two generations of cousin marriages isn’t likely to cause defects, the centuries of back breeding and familial marriages absolutely does though.

A female can get Hemophelia but to do that she would need to get the gene from both parents. The gene is on the X chromosome and a recessive trait so to have the conditioin would require two genes. Males only have one X chromosome so if they get the gene from their mother they will have to disease.
