Today’s adventure brings us not only a bounty of the sea but also an important lesson in marine conservation. Join us as we haul traps brimming with Eggers-egg-bearing female lobsters, which play a crucial role in maintaining healthy lobster populations.
In this episode, I'll take you through the process of notching Eggers. Notching, or giving a V-notch to these females, is a practice we lobstermen hold dear. It marks the lobsters as breeding females, making it illegal for anyone to catch and keep them if they're caught again. This ensures they remain in the ocean to continue reproducing, which is vital for sustaining future generations of lobsters.
Amidst our routine, we experienced the unexpected-an impromptu boarding by the Marine Patrol. These visits are always a bit nerve-wracking, but they're an essential part of ensuring that all of us on the water are following the regulations that keep the lobster populations thriving.
