Russ Smith is arguably Louisville's most decorated guard in the school's history. He had an amazing college career, but for these 3 reasons I think his Growth was Stunted. What made him not stick in the NBA? Watch here.

It’s crazy to think how where you get drafted (out of your control) has a MAJOR impact on your growth. Such a slim margin for error 🤧🤧🤧
@brotherLee340
@brotherLee340 4 года назад
It plays a part. But the real good players find a way. And talent is undeniable. But you right, it hurts borderline players like Russ.
3 года назад
That’s why a lot of talented guys that slip out of the 1st round prefer not to get drafted at all now. Being a 2nd round pick is probably the worse place you can start your career as a professional ball player, you have no control at all of your immediate future, you’re most likely being overlooked by your 1st round pick companion, and you don’t get guaranteed NBA money. If you’re undrafted you might be better off.

Played against Russ my entire life growin up in NYC. An absolute dog and one of the funnest players to play against. As a guard he brought the best out of you because he was so competitive and absolutely relentless on offense. In AAU, the Gauchos just let him get buckets because thats what he did best. Same thing Pitino did, so that factored into his low assist average as well. He was an incredible on-ball and passing lane defender in college. Him and Siva together used to make it extremely difficult for guards to get the ball over the half-court line. This is a fact, not an opinion. I think you downplayed his amazing on-ball pressure defensive ability a bit in this video. He also shot 47% from the field and 38% from 3 his last season at Louisville, which is insane in college for a guard, let alone a small guard. Per usual, great video and pretty spot on, as Ive come to expect of you. Keep it up my G!

Yeah, I think they missed a lot about Russ in this video. Calling him a poor defender is just plain wrong. The dude averaged 2 steals per game in college for 2 or 3 seasons.
@ericlancaster9509
@ericlancaster9509 2 года назад
The guy who made this video clearly never watched Russ in college to the magnitude that we all did. I too took offense to him saying Russ wasn’t a great defender. I’d call him an elite defender in college. He was always picking pockets and taking charges. Also, the part about Russ’ career assist avg at UofL…not a fair assessment. Russ was playing alongside one of the best PG’s in college basketball in Peyton Siva. Siva passed to Smith and he scored, that’s how it worked. Russ’ senior year he carried the pg responsibilities and avg’d 4.6 apg and was a 1st team AA as a pg. I gave this video a thumbs up because I appreciate someone taking the time to spotlight this Louisville legend but I do think he completely missed the mark on some of his evaluations.

First off Russ Smith was a flat out dawg and a bucket who had a great career at Louisville. However his issue is one that we have seen a lot of times before. Russ is a smaller guard who leans toward being a scorer. In college he didn’t shown enough skill at being a facilitator, enough discernment in his shot selection, and a consistent effort in pressuring opposing guards. He also was an inconsistent shooter from behind the arc having great shooting percentages his freshman and senior year but subpar percentages in his sophomore and junior seasons. At the NBA level Russ wasn’t going to be a high volume scorer so he was going to have to become more efficient pick his spots better and show an increased ability to run a team and consistently knock down shots from behind the arc. He never quite showed that as his game still leans heavily towards scoring and nothing else.

I think it’s all situational. IT was put in the right position. I think if Russ was drafted to a team that really needed a bench guy to come in for instant offense he really could have succeeded and developed into his role

Let's put it this way; iverson is one of the greats, and one of my favorite players, but Russ is just as good, if not better, ob the offensive end... Plainly put, this guy should be an NBA star...
